The light does not come FROM the lens, it goes TO the lens and the lens hood protects the lens from too much direct sunlight when you have to shoot into the sun.

Colin - it works very easily BUT - I tell everybody to DOWNLOAD THE MANUAL , PRINT IT AND STUDY IT. That is not the instruction manual - it's just a few tips to get started. It's thick because it's in many languages. The instruction manual prints out like the New York Times. The things about this camera is, Canon have tried to fit a quart into a pint pot - the camera has limitations for example poor low light performance because it doesn't have a 2.8f stop. At full telephoto it only opens to 6.3 but by zooming out just a LITTLE you can get a 5.6f. So read the manual, be a thinking photographer and devise ways to work around the limitations. By the way, the battery lasts MUCH longer than 'just a couple of hours' - it's a durable battery. Mine has been plugging away since 17 May 2017. It's a lovely camera - good luck.
