How can I be a good mobile photographer??

ISO - Sensitivity to light. - More ISO = more light (but also more grains and noise) - outdoor - ISO100 - Shade - ISO200 - Indoor - ISO400-800 Aperture - Size of opening in the lens. - smaller the number 👉🏼 bigger the hole (more light) - CONTROLS DEPTH OF FIELD. - smaller the f/stop lower the depth of field. - Only one person - low f/stop (f/2) - more person - f/3.5 f/4 etc., - For everything to be in focus (in landscape imgs) go to f/16 or f/20 Shutter speed - Amount of time the shutter is open. - 1/100, 1/250, 1/8000 of a second etc., - slower shutter speed 👉🏼 1", 2", 30" seconds. - CONTROLS MOTION BLUR. - Slow shutter speeds - used when on tripods. - Faster shutter speed used for sports etc. - For portrait - 1/250, 1/500 (ppl look sharp) - slow shutter speed (1/100) Works best for low light situations as well. - SLOW SHUTTER SPEED = MORE MOTION BLUR (More light) - When subject is moving - 1/800 - FASTER SHUTTER SPEED = LESS MOTION BLUR. Setting: 1. Set ISO first based on scene light (ISO100 OR 200 for outdoors) 2. Decide how much depth of field you want (focus only 1 person or focus the next nearby person (2) etc.,) More Aperture = more depth of focus. 3. How much motion blur I want to avoid? 4. You take a TEST shot of the scene and the pic is too DARK . 1. Slow shutter speed down until you don't see a motion blur. 2. Lower Aperture to LET MORE LIGHT until the subject is in focus. 3. Raise your ISO. You take a TEST shot of the scene and the pic is too BRIGHT. 1. Reduce ISO. 2. Raise shuttter speed. 3. VERY LAST, Raise the Aperture (Remember you' ll have larger circle IN FOCUS)

~ My own notes: 7:56 summary of everything 0:57 ISO - the sensitivity of camera sensor; the higher the iso, the more sensitive the cam sensor is gonna be; higher iso = more light but also more noise and grainy as well; set your iso based on the SCENE 2:40 Aperture - the size of lens opening/hole; the smaller the aperture, the bigger the lens hole, the more light comes in and vice versa; example: lens f/3.5 & f/38... 3.5 has bigger hole while 38 has smaller hole; the picture gets more detailed as the lens opening gets smaller; set your aperture based on the SUBJECT; if you want more depth of field (or more detailed pic), go for higher aperture (or small lens opening) 5:55 Shutter speed - the amount of time (in seconds) that the shutter is open; example: 1/50, 1/250, or 1/8000 of a second for faster shutter speed. There is also 1", 2" , 10" for slower shutter speed meaning your shutter is open for 10" (10 seconds); shutter speed controls motion blur, use faster shutter speed for sports to capture crisp motion and make a fast-moving object freeze in time and avoid blur; slow shutter speed = more motion blur Fix scenario #1: image is too dark: - slow the shutter speed - lower the aperture - raise the iso Fix scenario #2: too bright: - lower the iso - raise the shutter speed - raise the aperture

The aperture part when you use the ruler to explain the depth was the best. Thanks got one of the simplest, shortest but best photography tutorial.

It's all about how something is explained. I've watched videos about photography in Portuguese, which is my language, and in English, and this video is by far the most insightful and educational of all.

This was essentially my college photography class, that I paid over $1200 for in 10 minutes.....for free... Awesome vid man! Edit: seeing as there are a lot of people taking this comment EXTREMELY literally, let me clarify. Yes I paid a lot for my photography class in college, but it was only one part of the overall program I was in. It also included work with Photoshop, InDesign and some other things. However, the info in this video was the majority of the focus. So chill people lol!!!

"Explain it to me like I'm a 5 year old" is, by far, the best way to start when venturing into this world as a beginner. The explanations were given under the premise the viewer knew nothing about each setting, right down to when and why a photographer would need to change any of them. The examples were a great visual aid as well. This was exactly what I needed to feel ready for the next step in learning. Thank you!!

Probably never see this but this one of the best videos for beginners I’ve seen. Explains the basics and SHOWING EXAMPLES ! Which is hugeeee !! Camera Cheat Sheet ISO: (hgher ISO = more light and noise) - Sunny: 100 - Shade: 200 - Indoors: 400-800 (1600-3200) f/ - Aperture: (higher the f/ less light, lower the f/ more light) & (higher the f/ more depth of field, lower the f/ less depth of field) - Aperture controls depth of field Shutter Speed: The amount of time (measured in seconds) your shutter is open. - Shutter speed also controls motions blur. - Slow shutter speeds are used in conjunction with a tripod (landscape or silky smooth cotton candy waterfall) all the way up to long exposure astrophotography shots. - Fast shutter speeds are used for action shots (sports, people or pets running) fast shutter speeds freeze the subject without motion blur. Step 1.) Set ISO based on scene Step 2.) Set f/ - Aperture based on subject. - One person, low depth of field f/1.4, f/1.8, f/2, f/2.5 - Group of people, medium depth of field f/3.5, f/4 (f/8 is a good middle ground to make sure everyone is in focus) - Landscape (All subjects in focus) i.e. tree and mountain both in focus (no blur) f/16, f/22 - Indoor (dark / low light) f/1.4, f/1.8 Step 3.) Set Shutter Speed based on subject - Portrait (no motion blur, crispy) 1/250 - 1/500 - Walking or Running subject 1/800 or 1/100 for low light (subject is still) - Sports 1/800, 1/1000 or higher. The faster the subject is moving, the faster the shutter needs to be. The objective is to freeze the subject without producing motion blur. Problems & Fixes Problem 1: - You’re shot is ready. The settings are dialed in, but the shot is too dark. Fix 1: - There are 3 places to go to get more light. * Lower shutter speed until you start seeing motion blur, then back it off. * Lower aperture until the subject goes out of focus, then back it off. * Raise ISO (last resort) Problem 2: - Your shot is ready. The settings are dialed in, but the shot is too bright. Fix 2: * First thing to do is lower ISO because there is enough light. * If the image is still too bright after lowering the ISO then you need to raise the shutter speed. * Very last thing (after the first two) would be to raise aperture. Don’t sacrifice depth of field for less light. You can fix blown out highlights with the first two.

It's going to be my first time to teach basic photography to our interns tomorrow and this is quite a good refresher video. Nice one!

If someone can't explain easy enough mostly they themselves are not clear about it. The other thing is good photography is involved but not a deep science subject which requires deep amount of knowledge. Usually you start with basics and if it sticks you will learn on ur own by experience but some folks who charge huge amount of money needs to make it complicated to look their expensive course worthy.

set it to Av mode, set auto iso and change manualy only aperture, that's the best more for like 90% of all situations, playing with completely manual mode is crazy for begginers

@@jadeSLenin I mean aperture priority, which is what most of photographers use most of the time. I don't know how it's marked on Nikon cameras, it's mostly Av or just A. www.oehling.cz/data/imgs/29/0031329l.jpg You just set aperture manualy, so you have control over depth of field and you let other things (shutter speed and ISO) on auto which is ok in most of situations.

I tell people all of the time not to waste their money on photography tours/lessons. I can teach them everything in 15 minutes. I allow an extra 5 for them to set up the camera :-) People overthink and over analyze cameras and photography these days.

I started studying photography very recently and this is one of THE BEST videos I came across for the subject (I should have seen this first before watching lots of others). This is very short video but have the essential basics covered. The SS was awesome. Thank you for the word ISO (eye-so) ... I never knew !!!

THIS is what those of us just getting started need. The basic foundation of how our cameras operate and how we can use simple, straight forward principles to get decent shots. Much like people who buy high performance cars and drive 10 mph under the limit, it's annoying to see someone with a $500+ camera with it switched to AUTO. Thanks David!

Would you consider creating a shorter playlist of maybe ~10 vids specifically for beginners? May simply be curating some that you already have posted into something like "first 30 days of photography". I think that would help get more viewers to your channel and convert. Just a note, he is wrong in his intro description of ISO - it does not increase the sensivity of light, it just amplifies the light that reached the sensor. In other words, pictures in low light with high ISO are not grainy because the ISO is high, but because the noise was there due to a lack of light hitting the sensor. Higher ISO just revealed the problems. But for simplicity's sake you can use his description of course.

This video is so concise and helpful, a great starting point. Loved the chart you made. Thank you.

Overexposed: 1. Lower the iso 2. Faster shutter 3. Use ND filter 4. Dont touch aperture, use nd.

I really appreciate this video - I've been looking for something like this for a long time! My dad is a professional photographer, so I grew up with a camera in my hand, but oddly enough was never taught the basics. My shots are great as far as composition, but it's a gamble as far as the technical stuff. Thank you for the primer!

Can't thank you enough for making this so simple. I've been vlogging on youtube for a year now using my mobile phone for footage and editing. I've just bought myself a Canon 4000d as I have fallen in love with photography and want to grow in this area. Looking forward to trying it out now I have more of an idea what I'm doing now. The advice to set ISO first and shutter speed last is great for photography. However, everyone should keep in mind that if shooting video, the order is basically reversed. You typically want the shutter speed set as close as possible to 2x your framerate, you still want to set aperture second to get the depth of field you want, and then you adjust ISO last to get brightness to match. If your camera doesn't have enough usable ISO range to achieve the right target brightness, if the image is too bright, you can darken it with filters. If it's too dark/noisy on the other hand, then you may have to compromise on depth of field, and possibly slow down the shutter speed slightly.

This is the best beginner/refresher photography video I have ever seen.

Every other video that I have Watched until this one,now, made it sound like astronomy… and there you go in 10 minutes, in simple words, straight to the point… Thank you so so much !!!

Have to say, I want to start getting a bit more serious about photography and having watched many KZread videos on photography. Yours is the best, most informative, most detailed, easiest to understand with one of the best explanations on photography terms. Yours covers things that I would have to watch in 4-5 videos. That’s what I’ve been doing! I bought my canon 80D in March and I’ve been using it at home and on a walking trail near my house. I’ve watched so many KZread videos to help with learning photography, but this guy was by far the best! So simple.

It would not even be possible to make this easier, thank you for the excellent explenation.

Stoked man, thank you so much! I think it usually gets explained in an overcomplicated way that intimidates and turns people off photography. Hopefully when people see that the basis of it all is super simple, they'll dig in and spend more time on the more complex bits!

Havent used my camera in a long time, went super in depth for all of this a long time ago but this was a great refresher

You’ve done such an awesome job in putting together just right amount of information for someone to get the gist of what they should know when they pick up a dslr camera. Great refresher for a semi pro too!

I just watched Basics in 10 minutes really well done ! Unless you're a trained actor you have the natural gift of public speaking. I took a Photography class in high school (class of 76) now retired and experiencing the urge to shoot again. Of course in the 70's it was film and there was a certain rush you don't get in the digital age the excitement of the image appearing on the blank page in the developing solution and heady aroma of the chemicals. Back then no instant test shot you evaluated the the shot the same way then took multiple shots adjusting the settings and it wasn't until you got to the dark room that you could tell what worked which added to the excitement. I needed a quick refresher on the basics you just described and it all came flooding back. The 70's was a special time grow up it's funny once I learned the basics in my adolescent arrogance I never did the homework but I was always shooting what interested me. After a few months I said to my teacher I never do the homework and you never say anything. He said the homework was for people who don't have ideas of their own keep doing what you're doing. I like the fact that you give precise easy to understand information without bullshit small talk unnecessary bells and whistles. I'm a trained Actor and as you can see I can talk. Excuse me for pontificating but your video inspired me. Thank you.

@@gionspenzers I think some phone cameras like the S9+ I think was the first phone camera with a variable aperture lens so you could actually apply the aperture changing techniques from the video to it.

@@willwunsche6940 Yeah it's pretty cool that a phone camera can actually change the size of the Aperture of your camera at a small size of a grain. (Camera of a Cellphone is very small at sizes, like a size of a Pea or A Grain of Rice)

This video was so incredibly helpful! Short and sweet and I feel like I could pick up a camera and start shooting straight away!

With today's camera's ISO is the last thing I think about. It's a non-artistic factor in the outcome. The depth of field, and thus aperture is usually the most important for me. The shutter speed then follows that and is set depending on subject and whether on a tripod. Setting aperture and shutter first then letting ISO do its thing (use auto-ISO on Nikon) and you will never miss the shot. You may have to run the file through a denoise app if the ISO ended up in the noisy end, but at least I got the shot! Setting ISO first actually makes no sense, since you need to control depth of field and speed for the artistic outcome.

Hi, I'm Amanda. I just bought my first camera after years of taking pictures with my phone that people thought were taken with a camera. I saved and bought a Sony A7R III. I wanted to thank you for this video because to be honest I'm pretty overwhelmed. There's a lot I need to learn. I have taken a few good shots without doing anything with the settings(because I have no clue). I've been told I have a good eye for composition? Anyway, I'm a counsellor but have a dream to become a professional photographer and make amateur documentaries. Your video was so good for me because it gave me some of the basics in 10. I actually adjust the ISO last all the time. I see ISO as a last measure that will only be bumped up from 100 if I really need it. Usually I just set my aperture first, then my shutter speed as low as possible while maintaining the ISO at 100, and only if I can't make the shutter speed slower than what I usually feel comfortable (around 1/160), only then I'll bump up the ISO. I use a 1.4 56mm on a Sony a6400, btw.

Same here, with my Canon M50 the image quality starts to deteriorate after around 800 ISO, so I have to keep it low
