What’s inside a gen 3 Prius catalytic converter?

We’ve always been curious as to what’s inside the gen 3 Prius catalytic converter. This shows where and what the coolant pipes go and do.

Thank you so much for your videos! We came in a few months back to get my mom's accord addressed after an attempted catalytic theft attempt. You & your crew treated us well & with respect! I hope you all have been well & thriving, thank you!

Great video! Any chance you have seen someone remove the exhaust heat circulator completely? I imagine the engine air flow would be way better without it

Very interesting video. My gen 3 prius cat just got stolen and they left the part that looks like a resonator. I was wondering what was inside.

This isn't the cat...or more correctly one of the cats. It's a coolant pre-heater. It captures heat from the exhaust system to bring everything up to operating temperature faster.

It's freaking nonsense is what it is!! If you're having overheating problems, you might want to bypass this thing all together...

Great video. Just had my daughter’s 2014 up on the hoist and was thinking “why is there coolant lines on the resonator and what is that little cylinder for” Now I know, and have to change it, cause it’s leaking.

Very interesting. If the cat starts getting clogged, would that eventually affect engine coolant and possibly cause a premature head gasket failure?

Possibly. A cat that plugged up would affect engine performance and the ability to accelerate long before though.

Hi, good information. I have a prius 3 gen 2015 since new, cat never stolen, never replaced and it doesn't have those coolant lines at all. Just resonator, cat 1 an 2 and o2 sensor. Why?

Interesting. I w never seen a Gen 3 car delivered with any other configuration, regardless of the state it sold in. It’s possible you can’t see the lines, they’re on top.

@@mufflertech Thanks for responding. No, my friend, they are not on top. I already installed a cat shield, and there are no coolant lines anywhere. In fact i had to adapt the shield in order to install it. My Prius was made in Japan, and I bought it in Mexico. I live in Florida.

Is there any way to fit a gen 2 cat on a gen 3 prius?

Yes, but it would take some fabrication and it wouldn’t be legal in any state that abides by the CARB rules. You’d have to bypass the coolant exchange and build pipes that made up the connection difference to the cats.

That thing is nonsense and should be bypassed! My car was overheating. We couldn't figure out why I replaced all the normal things and found out it was hitting a gooseneck at this level so we bypassed it and now it's running fine! I had to replace the engine so I wanted to make sure my engine didn't warp again because of this horrible, misguided, poorly imagined nightmare of a part!
