Toyota PRIUS with a Flowmaster Muffler

/ autoedits_jason
This is a quick video feature on a Toyota Prius with a "sporty" muffler.
As a hot rodder, I needed a reliable car for my wife that would make her happy and keep our costs down so that I could spend any spare income on project cars. So, in 2004, we bought this thing. I wasn't thrilled with the purchase but the car fit the bill at the time and has traveled 143,000 trouble free miles but is still really, really boring.
Then I cut the stock muffler off, welded up a Flowmaster and a chrome tip to play a joke on my wife and I ended up leaving it on there. It cracks me up to hear this thing pull in to the driveway!

I own a 1985 Toyota straight axle 4x4. Stage 3 LC Engineering engine, Trail gear transmission + 4.70 transfer case. 1977 F150 Ford 4x4 with a 351m400 stroker engine. A 2001 XR650R race bike Kickstart only street legal. And a 2003 Toyota Prius with a Thornton stage 3 performance chip. According to the torque pro app it's putting out 151 horsepower. I'll turn the traction control off and it actually does burnouts. And so far out accelerates every car on the on-ramp. And still gets 30 miles to the gallon.. Born in 1960 I've been renting on vehicles since 1966. And love the surprise look on people's face when I smoke them in a little Toyota Prius.

My go to work car for a while was a 99 saturn sl1. Dark purple, 5 speed, slow as hell, but it got 40mpg average, cost 19 dollars a month for liability only, and it kept my trans am off the road when it was raining/snowing. So the purple plastic fantasic, even though it earned me lots of jokes from co-workers, was a great little car, and it kept my nice car, nice.

2005 Prius here. White as well. 160,000 miles. Flawless. No unscheduled maintenance items. Tires, oil changes. Perfect machine. Would I buy it again? Absolutely. I'm getting 49mpg all the time at typical freeway speeds. If you're going to drive to work each day beyond 15 minutes each way (I go 35 minutes each way), it seems to me that the hybrid charging system sufficiently charges the drive battery on this kind of range. I'm on my original drive battery and I'm still getting 90% or better charge and all green lights. Love my Prius. Could care less for those who don't. Lol

I have a Prius V (wagon). It is far and away the most practical car I have ever owned. Even the brakes last a crazy long time due to regneerative braking. It cruises effortlessly at 80-90mph on the highway once you get there (just don't try getting there going uphill). I like cool cars too, and am looking for a GT convertible (Jaguar/mercedes SL. Cd XLR), but the Prius V does a lot right.

I have a 1967 Camaro RS with a 700+ HP 468 BBC. I used to own a 2011 Shelby GT500 as my daily driver, then a Ford 2012 F250 6.7L Turbo Diesel. I sold them to get out of debt, support my hot rod habit, and now I drive a 2006 Scion Xb. Mopeds pass me on a daily basis, but it feels great to be out of debt and have a 700 HP monster for days when I don't feel like driving the toaster.

For five years, I drove Priuses for a company called Planet Tran. They are a green-minded car service/limo company that operates out of Boston and San Francisco and exclusively uses Toyota Priuses. They were the first company of their kind. Of the dozens of Priuses I drove over the years, not a single one ever broke down on me. They were all super reliable and sturdy. I even got rear-ended a couple of times and hit a deer in them with barely noticeable to no damage to the car each time. The other thing is I am also a great appreciator of hot rods, muscle cars, etc. I'm definitely far more into that kind of stuff than hybrids and other 'hippie-mobiles'. But while they are indeed a "soulless turdbox" of a car, it is still an impressive vehicle in many ways and one for which I have garnered an unexpected appreciation.

Dude, I own an automotive fab shop. I'm building everything from a 600ci desert truck, to an LS1 Z3 pro-am drift car right now. But my wife has a prius. looking at the technology in this car, it really does make you appreciate just how complex yet deadly reliable it is. I have a lot of respect for it. plus the nearly 1k lbs of payload capacity, it'll hold all sorts of car parts. Hell there's ten 50lb bags of horse feed in the back of it. I even built a hitch to tow the dirt bikes behind it. I tossed some nice color matched 16" tuner rims on it and some 20%. It's charcoal, so the wheels and tint are subtle but completely change the appearance into something a lot more Sporty and attractive. It looks pretty cool for a Prius.

Soon as you personalize it, it's a hot rod to you. Then you can break it down into "full custom" "low rider" "pro-street" etc. Even though a "tuned" Civic with a coffee can muffler is not my thing...I appreciate that to the dude driving...it IS his thing. Also it has a variable transmission, so there's no shifting. At highway speeds it runs normal RPMs, around 2300. Such a good car, and you don't get the hype of driving a Prius.

Exactly what Model Flowmaster muffler is this? I would love to get one for my Prius.

This reminds me of my 1995 ford escort that I put an edelbrock sticker on the back bumper. For the sole purpose of making people laugh while driving behind me in Dallas traffic.

You should put a 3 inch straight pipe exhaust with headers.

Enjoyed your video! We have two Prius(s) in our household, and like you have come to appreciate that they just run day in, day out problem-free. And when 95% of our driving is mundane city bumper to bumper, stop light to stop light, it's just as fast as the BMW M3 sitting next to us at the light, plus I only have to spend $3 dollars for every $10 he spends on gas. It adds up quickly. If I live in an area with twisty mountain roads, sure I'd be driving something else. We do have a nice little autocrossing corner-hugging manual tranny sports car to wake up the senses when needed.

😂 I’d get a Prius, then I’d start machining 272/282 cams, a stroker crank, and turn it from 40mpg to 6mpg 😂 but make 400whp in the process

This video is awesome. Did the muffler itself increase hp and fuel mileage on the gas engine? I myself drive a festiva daily but have a fusion for the weekends. Gas here is almost $4.50 and the festiva saves me a bunch.

dude my wife drives a prius, many you can relate. we are consistently cut off or tailed in a manner that would run a person off the road. however it sucks to be behind a slow prius. we are going with the flow of traffic and i feel like its out of spite. can you relate or no.

If I had to get a fuel efficient hybrid to support the hot rodding habit I'd get a Honda CR-Z. It's decently quick, has a manual transmission, looks sporty, and gets almost 40 MPG. Done.

I am a car guy and I loved my prius. PERIOD! I also like Jeeps but that is an other story. My prius never let me down. It was fun to drive and is even peppy with 415nm of torque (Prius 2). It had lots of Fun drive it. Lots of room, went to lots of festival with it, went with it several times accross the country loaded with tents, sleepingbags and stuff. Gas here is twice as expensive as in the US. So it saved me a truckload of money. So what is the problem?

My wife and I are thinking a new 40mpg Focus might be the ticket to keep our classic Mustangs on the road. For the Prius I'm definately thinking you need some rims and as you get close to trade in time in the future, you should slap on a cintrifugal super charger or a turbo just for a little bit of fun before it goes. At least give the turd box a chance at souldom.

It's probably just me, but I don't think driving a Prius is boring at all. I love the way it drives. I drove a friends '05 ford focus for a day, and I didn't care for it much. So far the Prius has not cost me anything in repairs and I'm getting about 48 mpg average.... Go Prii!
