Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this episode the guys discuss what makes a good mix. Is it the way the low end sounds everywhere? Is it the way the meters respond to your dynamics? Is it a certain lufs number that tells you everything? Is it the way how it sounds on airpods or the car? Lets find out

Devon you are my favorite person but please turn your mic down a tad bit. To compensate for you being a little more charismatic and louder. On the side note you are the GOAT of mixing period in the DIY world to me. I went to LA film school. And my mixes are A1 cause of you

You know what's crazy?? I've realized that a good mix is really stamped by others who know music really well. Most regular consumers of music(your everyday fan who simply listens to music) aren't worried about the mix and mastering. It's our peers like us- audio engineers and producers, as well as song writers, and artists and some managers that really care. It's a thought that came to mind upon watching this. With that being said, a mix starts from the production phase with arrangement, and then the recording phase. These 2 phases I think make up a great faction of what we call a mix. A song can be sonically mixed well but if it has a wack arrangement, someone still say the mix is off, when in reality is the production that's off.

Consumer may not “care” about the mix and master per se but it will influence their choice on wether or not they will keep coming back to the track. Replay value is greatly influenced by mix and master

A good mix is the one that makes you feel the song.
I agree! Most artist don’t know what they want to hear but they certainly know what they don’t want to hear. That’s what they’ll speak loud on AFTER you begin the mix.
YES PLEASE!!! Make an episode of “ 1 song , 3 mix enginears” . A great way show that enginears have their own sound too.

Logic with the MacBook every 4 years was a HUGE eye opener for me. I never thought about it like that.
I learn engineering by watching you and Wayne wav etc. and that’s because back then I use to need to pay for studio time and I was young so my parents would NEVER going to get me money to go so I use to go to a community recording studio and barely go studio time so I just pay attention to the engineer in the studio. One day the engineer wasn’t there and I step up to the plate. Now I record, mix and master myself
Mixing with a ref track is so crucial. I’m glad y’all made mention of it. Salute. Love the content.
I could listen to yall chop it up all day straight gems
Devon your songs are so fire dam good. Bringing back the 90s great r&b
Side note for the “mix like an artist” aspect. One thing I’ve seen often as a mix engineer is that most early on in their career that fall under that will also put whatever instrument they play at the front of the mix. There’s the saying that you can tell a song was mixed by a guitarist or a drummer for a reason. It’s always interesting since the way people mix varies so greatly
This podcast is exactly what us music nerds needed. These are convos I can't have with any of my friends lol. Keep em coming! I've been on windows all my life, never got a chance to even try logic or pro tools. and no way imma spend mad money to buy a macbook lol

Genuine good podcast I’ve been watching all day and yoh guys are fairly informative but that’s of course been following you a long time
For me what makes a good mix is clarity without being harsh and balance.
You guys are really good! You educate and also entertain. Thank you so m💝ch help me Devon
🔥 I started with fruity loops when it was just a demo couldn’t even save the tracks lol. Would never think that this is what it would turn into years later. But the reason why I started recording and mixing my own stuff was because it was hard to find someone who had the quality or went as hard as me.
Now that I'm Mastering I only listened to music that sounds full in the midrange without being overcompressed. Those mids really give you a professional feel. And I like expensive things

This was dope, definitely gave me a light bulb moment!
Pro tools for 12yrs now & still love it.
My reference mixing songs are Dwele - Hold On, Musiq Soulchild - Buddy
What makes a good mix? Id say whatever that you don't wanna hear on a mix shouldn't be on that mix (muddy kicks, clashing frequencies, thin vocals etc.) Also im a fan of this podcast now🔥🔥🔥
Today all Daws are powerfull and it depends on how you are used to do things but above all the most perfect daw is the one you know haw to use it inside out. (I want to try youre new rozeta eq and i wonder it will me my go to eq?)
I'd really like to know how you guys feel about studio one. Why you have or haven't tried it, if it has draw backs compared to the bigger names u usually mention, etc
"Lloyiso - Let Me Love You Now" GREAT MIX, VOCALS ARE INSANE 🔥
These podcasts are super dope!
What I think makes a good mix is every element in the song has it one space in the mix and dynamics.
@helpmedevvon where would you buy / download these reference songs in high quality & would they usually come with option to download wav?
Finally gave in and bought The God Particle. Give these guys a sponsorship already!
I think y’all need to throw a fruity loops compressor on LJ. It’s either the most DYNAMIC speaker i’ve ever heard or weird gain setting or something. Love the show 💯- it’s my driving listen every week. Keep it up!
I definitely do the upfront yearly subscription for Pro Tools. Thank God for the student discount as well 😂

A lot of gems on this podcast since day one. I just purchased the Rosetta EQ (order ID 22869). I've been wanting to try them templates but ain't going to cap y'all what's up with that 30% off discount though? 😅
This is dopeee, I'm a new fan
When it comes to the avid subscription I def suggest paying the 199 for annual renewal cuz that 300 a yr is a dub. As far as what makes a great mix.... top priority is artist satisfactory from a service standpoint... from a creative/technical standpoint I'd say a combination of balance, atmosphere and consistency throughout the record especially when u have multiple artists on one track with drastically different vocals frequency ranges. Lastly translatability from one listening environment to the next. It just can't be overstated. Don't under-mind the importance of creativity and variation to keep the listener engaged.
Ableton Guy Here - Appreciate the content
How does one mix pad/synth that it doesn’t sound muddy when compared to the other instruments in the mix?
“Why are we talking about death, this is a happy podcast” 🤣🤣🤣🤣 when you want to be thorough and make these wild analogies. Sometimes stuff happens
Anyone remembering the episode, where one of them did these effects with his mouth? Reverse verb ect.? Wich was it?
The way yall underrate FL studio is crazy. There's no way you can here if I mixed on fl cause I barely ever use their stock plug-ins. And thats the main reason .
Wonder what ya'll think of those Jbls compared to the Kali lp8s
I use that coco heart elton john & dua lipa as a reference all the time thats a banger
Shoutout X rip legend🔥🙏🏾
I want to be on an episode lol. I agree I learned logic first!
So let’s say I am looking for a reference track, but I can’t find a track that resembles my track, what do I gotta do?

Talk about 32 bit float *mics* for studios. I know RODE has the *NT1 5th Gen*
that man was mad about them speakers lol
I'm a rapper, and an begginer engineer. I just wanna sound good. I want to have my own style, which I do lyricly, but mixing I'm have an idea, but until I've mastered the mix I can then work on a signature sound.
Nice stuff.... could you guys talk about microphones USB mics to be preciseeeee
Logic is the goat!! Country music is my mix references or CCM. A good mix has space, controlled frequencies and balance
My Macs normally last about 6 years. That’s more than an average laptop right? I buy refurbished but max performance loaded MacBooks. Just a recommendation if you think about Logic again 😉
19:10 did anyone go back and listen to “caught their eyes” that second verse he was on point!! You can hear the difference in HOV’s tone in different lines within the verse 😳 I never caught it. Must listen with headphones tho
Honestly, art is just subjective. From the artist to the consumer. An artist could create something with a specific interpretation in mind, while the consumer could interpret the art completely differently, due their own subjective experience. Wherever there is common interpretation, exists art that is widely appreciated.
You guys need someone to represent logic users and this pod is perfect!
