What is the Origin of Flight? - Dr. Todd Wood

Taken from "Beyond Is Genesis History? Vol 2 : Life & Design." Available in full here:

Explore the fascinating fields of biology, genetics, and intelligent design with 16 in-depth interviews featuring Del Tackett and six scientists from the film.
In the aviary at the Memphis Zoo, biologist Todd Wood and Del Tackett marvel at several created kinds of birds as they compare the creationist view of the origin of flight with the evolutionary view. The fossil of an extinct half-bird/half-reptile-looking creature called Archaeopteryx broaches a discussion about mosaic animals.

Dr. Todd Wood has a BS in Biology from Liberty University in Virginia (1994) and a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Virginia (Charlottesville, 1999). Immediately following his PhD work at Virginia, Dr. Wood accepted a position as the Director of Bioinformatics at the Clemson University Genomics Institute (Clemson, South Carolina). After working for about two years at Clemson University, Dr. Wood accepted a faculty position at Bryan College (Dayton, Tennessee) in 2002. He is now president of the Core Academy of Science.

The imagination of The God of Jacob is awesome. I have no doubt that what we see does not even scratch the surface of what GOD can do. I circled the earth from my time in the U.S. Navy and seen (w/my eyes) birds that "swim" deep underwater then resurface to fly away w/the fish they caught, fish that "fly" (as I looked through the hole for the anchor chain on the bow of a carrier), birds that "run" up to 40 mph, fish that "climb" vertical cliffs to mate and lay eggs at the top of the cliff on islands in the pacific, etc, etc,. ALL created by HIM. It is written "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, nor has it entered into the imagination of man The Wonderful Things GOD Has Prepared For Those Who Love HIM". It will take eternity to learn HIS ways.

Excellent production value and a winsome host, but overall an argument that disappoints. First, at 2:15, Dr. Wood seems to argue that, because “flight had one beginning” is simpler than “flight evolved four times”, that makes it more likely. (Replace “flight” with other things and you’ll see what I mean - is it more likely that the Beatles oeuvre was written by one person, because that would be simpler?) That doesn’t constitute strong evidence - and it makes an open-minded viewer wonder if that’s being said because there isn’t stronger evidence. Second, near the end, Dr. Wood asserts that Archaeopteryx should be understood as a composite animal. This is really interesting - going against a hundred years of how all sides have interpreted the animal. Interesting claims call for evidence, but none is given - making it feel like an argument from authority (i.e. “you can trust this guy, because he has a PhD”). I’m a science teacher, and I love to encourage my creationist students to get into the creation-evolution debate, because they’ll learn to think scientifically. I’m sorry that this is a video I’d only recommend to them to learn what good scientific argumentation doesn’t look like.

In the pre-flood world there were the Nephilim, (the fallen ones) that went unto the daughters of men. The creation of hybrid humans. KJV translates these as giants, Raphaim the offspring of the Nephilim. Gen 6. Where all flesh was corrupted, the genome (DNA) was polluted with hybrids not of their kind, human and animal. Only Noah and his sons were perfect in their generations (genome). God sent the animals to Noah for the Arch, therefore none of the animals God sent were hybrids. The church is split on (Gen 6) due to thought embraced recent in church history are seen as the Sons of Seth as the Sons of God going unto the daughters of Cain. Ancient Rabbinical thought and the early church is fallen angels were the Sons of God, Nephilim of Gen 6. The Nephilim messed with all of God's creation and corrupted all flesh. This early church view is important to note. Jesus stated that just before he returns it will be like the days of Noah. Mat 24. Today we see the genome, DNA of all flesh "engineered' as a great "accomplishment". LOL Many contend Archaeopteryx is a hybrid fossil of Nephilim origin, and not a created kind.

People were a lot smarter back then and could learn a lot more given the much longer life spans. Maybe they were already doing those same abominable things in the time before Noah. It is mind boggling to imagine how grievous the sin for God to be sorry He created us and chose to destroy all except Noah's family. And indeed, our many sins are unbelievably grievous like that today.

You may be confusing an "intermediate form" with a "transitional form." A transitional form is specifically an organism that exhibits traits of both an alleged ancestral group and its supposed derived descendant group. Whereas intermediate form is a more generic term which refers to organisms that exhibit traits of two other types of organisms, regardless of whether or not they are related. It is similar to the term "mosaic." Hence, Archaeopteryx and hoatzins are intermediates, but not not transitional forms.

00:02:22 "...this is a lot easier to explain if God created the flying things and that's where flight came from...we don't have to think about that..." Nope. That's not an explanation, it's merely a story. To qualify as an explanation, it has to have at least some explanatory and predictive power, and it has neither. You might as well say that Allah did it, or Shiva, or pixies or something like that; all those stories have about the same predictive power, which is to say none, and that applies to the story in the Bible as well. And maybe you "dont' have to think about that", but many millions of humans do, and take such questions pretty seriously, too. 00:02:54 "...we obviously have a radical difference here between these two paradigms..." Creationism is by definition entirely opposed to science. So, yes. 00:03:09 "....in the creation model, you just have one origin..." Nope. There is no "creation model", because creationism has no methodology, no means of testing or measuring any of its claims, no objective standards by which its research can be judged, no peer-review process, no publications of note, nothing at all besides a completely unreasoning and unreasonable interpretation of one particular book of religion which conflicts with *other* popular interpretations of the same book. There is no "creation model". You might as well try to talk about a "magic model" or a "pixies did it model. It's silly. 00:03:28 "....possible multiple created kinds of birds..." I have asked at least two dozen creationists over the course of about twenty years for a rigorous, defensible, internally consistent definition for the word "kind" in this context, and not one of them was able to. I have also read up on creationist texts and watched some lectures, too, and none of *them* offer such a definition, either. So...what are you talking about? Meh...the rest of this just the usual creationist cruft, nothing but misrepresented science and lies. And it's so boring! No thanks, I have better things to do today....
