What Is The Mandela Effect? | Psychology, Theories, & Examples

Why do we all remember things that never happened? In this video, we explore the psychology behind the Mandela Effect. The Mandela Effect was first coined by Fiona Broome when she mistakenly remembered Nelson Mandela's death way before he actually died. This has created numerous theories as to why we remember things one way when they actually are another, including the fact that we could be remembering things that happened in a parallel universe. But is that the case? Or are we just being tricked by numerous examples of collective misremembering.

CLARIFICATION: For "we are the champions" vs "we are the champions of the world", Freddie Mercury repeatedly says "we are the champions of the world" during the song, but he does not sing this at the END of the song. That is where we see the mandela effect. We all remember it ENDING this way because our brains are overgeneralizing and assuming that the pattern repeats itself at the END of the song, but it does not in the original version (although I can't speak for other versions). Just wanted to get that out there before all the Queen fans come after me :)

There's a live version where Freddy sings "of the world" at the end. The song itself was literally DESIGNED and sets up for him to say "of the world" at the end.

Agree with your analysis. I was always annoyed at the end of the song because of the “expectation” that he will say “of the world”, and every time I had to remind myself that he wouldn’t.

I think some of it has to do with "priming". Someone once asked me "did the monopoly man have a monocle?", I thought about it and said yes. However, I don't think I would have mentioned one if nobody asked about it. Funny enough, when I see the two images side by side, one with a monocle and one without, the one with the monocle looks wrong to me despite me initially agreeing that he had one when asked. The psychology of memory is really interesting. This is why it's unethical and in many cases forbidden to ask "leading questions" that suggest a certain narrative when cross-examining witnesses in court. You can plant the idea and it grows on it's own in their mind.

Some food for thought: I’ve experienced some, not all, the effects. I was born and lived in a foreign country before I came to US, so the Berenstein Bears and Shazam are two I cant opine with certainty. But I grew up playing the Spanish version of Monopoly, and it’s clear in my mind he had a monocle. About Forrest Gump, the confusion may be because when he says “was like a box of chocolate” is the beginning of the movie, but the movie is chronologically backward. FG is talking in present time about his past and what his mother used to say. The last 2 times we hear the phrase during the movie (sequence), is said by his mother before dying so she says “IS like a box of chocolate” because she is talking in present time. So what got fixed on our mind was the “is” not the “was”.

Hi. I just had a huge Mandela effect happen to me. I watched a music video that I watched very recently (about 6 months ago) It's a video I particularly loved and it has completely changed, like the complete opposite to what it was.... The song is 'Sign your name' by Terence Trent D'arby. The old video is in black and white and the model and her daughter both have long curly hair. The images are of them running in slow motion on rooftops with lots of white sheets blowing in the wind... The new video is the complete opposite... Any chance you know what I am talking about?

I think I figured out kazaam/shazaam. I was 6 when kazaam came out so did another movie called First Kid. Sinbad played the President's kid's bodyguard, following him around waiting on him every hand and foot. In both movies the kids got in fights and I believe ended up getting in trouble with the mob or some type of gang as like the main conflict. Could be mixing them up idk. As for the name, kazaam had SHaq in it and shazaam is actually a name used in other stuff thru the years. Kazaam is just a random and easy to forget word i think. Just a theory

Could the Mandela effect be a misinterpretation and we could be confusing it with different countries edited versions? It's not too far out there, look at Zootopia for example, different countries have different editorial cuts of the same movie but with different changes an example is the news anchors with an animal being represented by a different nation. So could we be just be watching different versions of different media and knowledge and be comparing different versions?

Must say this: I do believe in the scientific explanation for the Mandela effect but: Freddie Mercury did said "...of the World" in ALL, I repeat, ALL of the recorded versions of "We are the Champions". Perhaps what you are trying to explain is the fact that the theme is called only "We are the Champions" and not "We are the Champions of the World" because the song ends always with this verse. Bye bye, take care and use your brain properly! 😏
