Fatty Liver Disease
Fatty liver disease is a common condition caused by the storage of extra fat in the liver. Most people have no symptoms, and it doesn’t cause serious problems for them. In some cases, though, it can lead to liver damage. The good news is you can often prevent or even reverse fatty liver disease with lifestyle changes.
What is the liver’s function?
Your liver is an essential organ with multiple life-supporting functions. The liver:
Produces bile, which helps with digestion.
Makes proteins for the body.
Stores iron.
Converts nutrients into energy.
Creates substances that help your blood clot (stick together to heal wounds).
Helps you resist infections by making immune factors and removing bacteria and toxins (substances that can harm your body) from your blood.
What is fatty liver disease?
Fatty liver disease (steatosis) is a common condition caused by having too much fat build up in your liver. A healthy liver contains a small amount of fat. It becomes a problem when fat reaches 5% to 10% of your liver’s weight.
Why is fatty liver disease bad?
In most cases, fatty liver disease doesn’t cause any serious problems or prevent your liver from functioning normally. But for 7% to 30% of people with the condition, fatty liver disease gets worse over time. It progresses through three stages:
Your liver becomes inflamed (swollen), which damages its tissue. This stage is called steatohepatitis.
Scar tissue forms where your liver is damaged. This process is called fibrosis.
Extensive scar tissue replaces healthy tissue. At this point, you have cirrhosis of the liver.
Cirrhosis of the liver
Cirrhosis of the liver is a result of severe damage to the liver. The hard scar tissue that replaces healthy liver tissue slows down the liver’s functioning. Eventually, it can block liver function entirely. Cirrhosis can lead to liver failure and liver cancer.
What are the forms of fatty liver disease?
There are two main forms of fatty liver disease:
Alcohol-induced fatty liver disease
Alcohol-induced fatty liver disease is caused by heavy drinking. (Moderate drinking is defined as one drink a day for women and up to two drinks per day for men.) About 5% of people in the U.S. have this form of liver disease.
Non-alcohol related fatty liver disease
Non-alcohol related fatty liver disease (NAFLD) occurs in people who aren’t heavy drinkers. The condition affects one in three adults and one in 10 children in the United States. Researchers haven’t found the exact cause of non-alcohol related fatty liver disease. Several factors, such as obesity and diabetes, can increase your risk.
SYMPTOMS AND CAUSES
Who gets fatty liver disease?
You have a greater chance of developing fatty liver disease if you:
Are of Hispanic or Asian descent.
Have completed menopause (your periods have stopped).
Have obesity with a high level of belly fat.
Have high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol.
Have obstructive sleep apnea (a blocked airway that causes breathing to stop and start during sleep).
What causes fatty liver disease?
Some people get fatty liver disease without having any pre-existing conditions. But these risk factors make you more likely to develop it:
Having overweight/obesity.
Having Type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance.
Having metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high triglyceride levels).
Taking certain prescription medications, such as amiodarone (Cordarone®), diltiazem (Cardizem®), tamoxifen (Nolvadex®) or steroids.

@Tamim-uTube To start, go on daily walks , even by yourself, get fresh air, visual, mental stimulation, say Hi to everyone you pass, seeing a smile in return is nice. Go to your local library, look on the bulletin board, there are a lot of fliers posted for different activities, meetings, clubs around your town . Sometimes supermarket bulletin boards advertise activities, or help wanted situations nearby, Every town has a community center, usually by the police station. They always have activities for all ages, throughout the year. Some are free, most are low cost. Good luck, and good mental health. 👍

I had abdominal pain and got an ultrasound and discovered that I had fatty liver. I quit drinking beer, started exercising and switched to a semiketo diet and intermittent fasting. My triglycerides plummeted from 300 to around 60 and my HDL went up from the mid20s up to a healthy range and I lost 45 pounds and I haven't felt this good in 20 years!

Take the milk thistle supplements 3 × a day for 6 months, and continue your fasting ,then see your doctor for lab tests on your liver levels. It will improve drastically. Coffee is good for cleansing your liver no more than two cups a day. Edit: I just googled St Mary's thistle way expensive I used a Walmart brand spring valley milk thistle 175 mg capsules take three times a day. Plus I was able to drink some beers a few times a week, and after 6 months my liver levels was back to normal. Stay away from the carbs and sugar.

This was the case for me and keto/carnivore got me out of trouble, but now I enjoy more of the Mediterranean diet, but still have smaller serves of bread or fruit, as carbs or sugar were definite the major risk factor for me. @@gben4life This means very low carbohydrate diets. Keto is mostly just meat, fish, eggs, pork, chicken with salads. You keep carbs under about 30 grams a day. Carnivore is more extreme with only meat, eggs, chicken, pork or seafood. This is close to 0 carbs a day! It’s not easy. For example, a potato has about 25 to 30 grams of carbs!

I had symptoms of NAFLD 2 months ago due to my elevated liver enzymes (ALT and AST). I took fish oil 1200mg with Omega 3- 360mg, 2 softgels daily. I'm not a fish eater thats why my PCP (Primary care provider) advised me to take fish oil. I also slowed down on saturated fat like pork belly and fried food, high carbs, and sweets. I had coffee once a day in the morning, do my exercise, and water with lemon. Also, I'm taking Moringa see if it helps. Last week I had my routine blood work and hepatitis panel, my liver enzymes were back to normal and my hepatitis panel was negative. Thank God! It's hard to change our diet but it truly helps, plus the fish oil. I hope this Moringa capsules helps too. I noticed I'm not craving for food like I used to. But before I take any supplements I refer it to my PCP.

@@drsaalaar I think a lot of doctors would argue it’s the very best way, along with carnivore diet. What’s hard for regular people like me is when one doctor says one thing and another swears by another. I’m trying my best to find the facts and truth and so far the results of carnivore and keto have me leaning that direction but. I don’t think Mediterranean is bad, and I bet that if you were to lower your carb intake to around 5% it would be just as good. I don’t know 🤷🏼‍♂️

Fat is a stimulant, and when in abundance from food (mainly from animal sources and oils) sludges up the body and causes problems for liver detoxification. It takes by far the longest to digest of all macro nutrients taxing the body which over time puts more pressure on the liver / gallbladder. If you think high fat keto is healthy long term then you've been swindled. Keto has been around for decades under different names, it keeps morphing... Because it is not objectively healthy long term for most people. It is only a short term reset switch which works for 'some' people, and then switch to healthy Mediterranean diet or something similar. Our diet is naturally supposed to be high in bioflavonoids and anti-oxidants, not saturated animal fats and omega 6's.. Foods with hydrative cleansing properties like fruit and veg is what cleanses the liver and keeps that channel running. Healthy omega 3 fats from chia/flax are great too. There's an epidemic of dehydration, and the SAD and keto diet are both contributing to it monstrously.

I reversed NAFLD. My NASH (fibrosis) is in remission confirmed via Fibroscan and ultrasound. Took a big commitment in diet and exercise. I had lower leg swelling, horrible skin, hot feet, nausea, liver pain that was getting worse and spreading, weakness, low appetite, confusion, arthritis pains, etc. Cholecystectomy is a contributor IMO. Alcohol is number one cause. Seed oils VERY bad. She’s right, my low levels of potassium was another factor that I corrected. Don’t be afraid to exercise if you haven’t in a long time. I haven’t run for over 30 years. I ran one mile daily for 30 days and improved my cardiac output by 20%. Better than daily walking, could feel the changes occurring when I jogged daily. No long distances, jog at your own pace - get HR up. It was best therapy for me and I’m not a runner. Make a log and record your progress. Take your time but don’t skip. 👍

Because we are somewhat dependent on that constant eating, we aren't as practiced at going into that state of being, and there will be 'hunger pangs' or withdrawal symptoms, but the liver produces energy from the fat you have stored. Your body then takes the energy it saves from having to digest food and uses it in other areas, repairing cells, clearing your mind from food dependence, or whatever it might be, while burning the fat, tightening skin, sparing muscle, as long as you are careful and conscious of what you're doing. thank you!!! so , it's known that consuming canabis in edibles is processed by the liver.... does that harm the liver if consumed almost daily? thanks again.

Actually, I could not find any article to say so. What you should be aware is that since the cannabis in the edibles goes through the liver, this process makes its effect on your body more and since there is no specific regulations to check these edibles, there is the risk that one of them have higher dosage and thus causing neurological complications. I suggest you read this article. Stay safe💪 accp1.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/jcph.778

Hey Doctor, thanks for the knowledgable video ! I wantes to ask. If one has fatty liver (fibrosis f2-f3) and obese Can he use a high carb moderate and low fat diet within a calorie deficit to lose weight? I was worried incase the ratio of macros and the amount of carbs would be harmful in my specific case?

Eating bananas and sweet potatoes for potassium can't outweigh the carbs and sugar effect on your liver. Leafy greens and broccoli much better choice. Potasium with almost no carbs/sugar.

I had covid, lost 40 pounds in four months. Then got diagnosed with liver cirrhosis. Finding it difficult to exercise in the gym because I'm too sore the following days. I can only do some light walking. So far my diagnosis hasn't changed, am doing the Mediterranean diet.
