What is the difference between PCIe Gen 3 and PCIe Gen 4? - DIY in 5 Ep 170

Ғылым және технология

If you’re confused about the benefits PCIe 4.0 components offer over alternatives, we have the details you need! PCIe Gen 4 is the market standard interface for connecting high-speed components to motherboards, from SSDs to CPUs, GPUs, and beyond.
PCIe 4.0 doubles the data rate of its predecessor, PCIe 3.0. It runs more efficiently too, consuming less power. This means that it produces less heat. Performance for modular items like SSDs and graphics cards greatly benefits from upgrading to 4.0.
PCIe Gen 4 devices only achieve their potential in circumstances where the CPU and motherboard are compatible with the protocol. While initially only a handful of AMD motherboards were able to support PCIe Gen 4, these days there are many varieties of Intel and AMD motherboards that are compatible, as well as a range of CPUs.
People will sometimes conflate PCIe and NVMe. It is important to understand that NVMe is a protocol for SSDs, not an interface like PCIe. PCIe NVMe SSDs are far faster than SATA SSDs, but it should be noted that many recent PCIe NVMe SSDs were themselves having their top performance inhibited by the limitations of PCIe Gen 3. Gen 4 has resolved this bottleneck, meaning that PCIe NVMe SSDs are extremely fast compared to the last generation of SSDs. The majority of PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs on the market are in M.2 form factor, though others are available if required.
PCIe Gen 5 is already being rolled out, with Intel Gen 5 CPUs already available. However, these are not yet fully compatible with products on the market at present. Technology marches on, but for now, PCIe 4.0 offers the best performance possible for personal computers.

The only people that really will benefit (or probably even notice things like the difference between PCI-E 3.0 and 4.0, or DDR4 and DDR5) are gamers and people creating media (video or possibly photo editing, etc). For Everyone else it doesn't really matter. You likely won't even perceive any of the speed differences doing general tasks. This is why I'm running my AMD system until it dies. It's only 3 years old, has PCI-E 3.0 and DDR4 but for what I do, it's plenty fast and I built it before the price of components started to go up. Hoepfully it will survive another 2-3 years until hopefully the supply chain and computer parts pricing stabilizes.

A few nitpicks- the PCI spec needs to have both the CPU and Motherboard Chipset in agreement. It is possible (especially on the AMD side) to have a PCIe gen 4 supporting CPU on a motherboard that is not. Additionally, some motherboard chipsets support only 1 PCIe gen 4 lane that is shared between a slot (GPU) and a NVMe slot - in that case, you can only have one PCIe gen 4 supporting device - and using one may completely disable the other - so check with the motherboard's user manual to make sure.

True. For example AMD B550 motherboard has has only 20 PCle gen 4.0 lanes. One is x16 for GPU and one is x4 for m.2 NVME SSD card. So it lacks PCle 4.0 supports for CPU

I am about to install a Gen 4 NVME Drive in my Gen 3 Acer Aspire 5 laptop. I realize the new drive will be limited by the Gen 3 CPU bus, but I think the drive will STILL be an improvement over the (so-so) factory NVME. Wish me luck. The new drive IS backward compatible.

What she didn’t say: Most people won’t notice a difference in speeds for your M.2’s unless you move a lot of large individual files (and not a bunch of small ones that add up to a large transfer) you won’t see a difference. You CAN see a difference on some of the new GPUs

In real-world tests, Gen 3 SSDs are about as fast as Gen 4 SSDs (and no, let's assume they're not QLC). So unless the price difference between the models you're looking at is negligible, I think most folks will just stick with Gen 3.
