Edwardian* although, there was a bit of crossover and late Victorian showers weren’t all that different. Some of them had 10x more metal tubes lining the walls and honestly look more like some kind of medieval torture device than a shower. The components of this one, however, must’ve been made after the turn of the century, when indoor plumbing became more common (among the wealthy). Interesting note: through most of the Victorian era, bathing was seen as purely therapeutic and not a hygienic necessity.

@@agoogolofgeesethe amount of bathing/showering we have today is much more „therapeutical“ to appease social pressure than a necessity. It’s proven again and again that showering with soap more than once or utmostly twice a week is extremely damaging to your scalp and skin.

@@rolux4853 actually, I agree. Corporations have sold the idea to us to keep us dependent on their products. That said, I do think showering often with at least water is important for cleanliness and hygiene. For most of the Victorian era, that was not the case. I’m not sure whether or not those with showers used soaps when they washed back then, but I’m inclined to think it less common and they certain didn’t have the overblown market for such products anyway. I probably could’ve phrased my other comment better. Cheers!

Right? My house was built in 99, and the valves in my upstairs bathroom sink just, like, broke when I was trying to close them. Now I just have a tiny drip of water that comes out and the valve handle just turns and turns without doing anything. 😂😭 I need to fix it, but I’m just too tired right now. I have no idea where this man gets all his energy and motivation. It’s seriously impressive to watch.

I travel to St. Louis quite a bit (mostly for church at St. Francis de Sales Oratory). I live just 45 mins away on the illinois side. Our old farm house was built in 1918. It was the jewel of the town back then and it is a jewel even today. Big and stylish. My dad passed away last year and my mom was thinking about selling the house. Your videos convinced me to have my mom keep it in the family and i plan on buying it off of her when my fiancé and I get married and we get the finances. Even now we've been slowly bringing it back to life. Youre a great guy and i love your passion. Keep it up!

They use these types of shower today in SPA hotels for massaging the body, removing dead skin cells and stimulating blood circulation. Supposed to be good for you. I have seen them in Spain. Strange but enjoyable experience. Glad that you finally have one of those in action and the one you have is a historical version of it. You have done a great job to recreate that fancy era of modern inventions.

Finally, the full reveal? Loved this video! I realize now that my grandparents' 1880's Victorian house (sold in the 1960's) had a simpler version of the needle shower in the only bathtub. We called it the "shower tree" as it had three branches from a central stalk, each with multiple small holes facing the tub. There was no shower head, though. You pulled up a lever on the bath spout to activate it. the needles of water shot out of the bottom branch the farthest, as the water pressure weakened on the higher branches. It's long gone, now.

By the way, that stone baseboard is that gray marble limestone you see used as bathroom stalls in old buildings as well as gray stone work in many a public building from the first half of the 20th century. It would have been quarried in Phenix, Missouri (just north of Springfield) where all of that type of stone around the country came from.

I used the same Mapei grout in my bathroom and in my kitchen. I used my food scale to weight out a 1/4 of the bag at a time so I could work in manageable batches to offset the quick curing time. This helped A LOT. I set a timer for 10 minutes, grouted what I could in that time and then went back and groomed that grout before doing a second 10 minute session. As I recall, I got 2-3 10 minute grouting/grooming sessions from each 1/4 bag batch. The grout is worth it. it is self sealed and stays clean. My shower is over 1 1/2 years old and not a speck of discoloration or mold has developed. No cracks either.

Congratulations and Yes, plumbing history is actually pretty cool especially rarities like the needle shower. As to the tiles, there were actually special end pieces made for the areas you mitered. My house has original end caps for left and right sides in all the pieces, tile casing pieces around doors and windows, and even border caps where mirrors split the tile chair rail, also curved corners - all from the 1910’s. You can still get many of these specialty pieces from the reproduction tile company Heritage Tile Subway line. I used them to replace missing pieces during my restoration, and to reconstruct one bath that had been totally gutted (sadly) by a prior owner. Enjoy your shower and looking forward to the next chapter.

It looks great, make sure yosi that last little set we all forget with those facuets because we are so happy they are in and working! Level the wording on your handles to be level when they are off. It's a pain but it's adds that definite polished look! Congrats on your new shower. You're work is always amazing

Thank you so much for making these videos. I grew up in a house that was over 200 years old always fascinated by the quality. Now I am a plumber who works on homes, and I am depressed by the lack of quality, skill, and pride. During our house search, I fell in love with a Victorian, but unfortunately was told that it was too much work. This decision that I did not get to make eats at the core of my being, thank you so much for preserving and caring about things that most people would throw out. Thank you for letting us all live vicariously through you.

I have watched every episode from the beginning. I never doubted you. Others might have given up or started taking shortcuts & honestly that would have been very understandable given the scope of work! I'm so very happy you have your shower & its just beautiful. I love your passion & spirit & kindness, and look forward to watching you and Kim for many years.

In Hot Springs Arkansas, there are bath houses still open from that time period. My sisters and I took our Grandma for the works and it's an amazing memory that I treasure. We started with a hot mineral water bath in an original bathtub while sipping mineral water (an employee washed your back in the tub), then they had sits baths with your butt in the water and feet dangling out (that had us all cracking up ~sorry for the pun~), then there was a steam tank you could sit in with only your head sticking out, then we got to lie down on hot packs for any achey areas with cool cloths on our faces, and then we got to rinse our bodies in a needle shower. The grand finale was a full body massage. Grandma said the experience was a dream come true! 😊

Nice you are taking the time, thought, and energy to restore your old home. So many clueless DYIers just want a new house inside. Instead of restoring it to new original condition.

What a beauty she is. That is the nicest looking shower I’ve seen in a long time. Can see your emotions n how thrilled you are to have accomplished this shower right out of the Victorian era. It was a long time coming but it was well worth it. I would love to have that shower in my home the heck with the bath tub. LOL So proud of you. Give yourself several pats on the back you deserve it. ♥️♥️♥️♥️😊👍👍👏👏👏🌟

About the grout - I've seen other KZreadrs using the same grout, which was also super messy for them. The problem was mixing the grout too long and too fast (with some power tool instead of mixing it slower/by hand). It trapped a lot of air inside which made the curing time much shorter. Also - just like you mentioned - higher air and water temperatures can make it more difficult to work with. With all that - you did a beautiful job with the shower! It looks so clean and the style is very unique. Thanks for doing what you do with such passion and respect. Greetings from Poland!

I use this grout on most of my jobs and can say the temp has a huge role in the set up time. I do mix with a variable speed mixing drill on lowest setting for roughly 2-3 minutes then let sit for 3-5 min before mixing for one last minute to remix the excess moisture that rises to top back through otherwise you would pull out first few scoops that would be super wet leaving rest with too little water and problems. I use 1.1 quart cold clean water per 10 lb bag and have no problems getting it all in well before it begins to set up. One trick if want a few extra minutes is to dump it all into a pile on floor or onto mud hawk and wont set as fast as it does in a bucket. I Usually use Kerapoxy cq on shower floors and then this on rest of shower but have used this on complete showers with great results. Ive seen so many issues with the premixed urethane grouts in wet areas despite their marketing I would use ultracolor plus fa anyway over those products especially in a shower

I love the top trim of the tile. That said, we had similar tile trim in our parent's house's bathtub enclosure that was done in the 50s. Over the decades condensation from the shower would run down the painted walls and pool around that top edge. Eventually water got between the paint and the tiles and started crumbling the paint and then the drywall behind it. When we renovated the house, we put thinner white tiles above the trim all the way up to the ceiling, solving the condensation issues.
