building something to Last means this company couldn't resell things. not because it is bad. it is very good that no broken reports that could potentially earn companies a replacement parts revenue. and main structures are all steel AFAIK. that's really fan f-ing tastic. one for either resettlements of nuked out city and gives settles a nice 'House of Yesterday' in place of deplorable slum shelters. or something similiar to quick build bases in Command and Conquer settings. well i've yet to buy Fallout4 (so expensive +all DLCs. 1,300 bahts aren't cheap) and cram as many settlement building mods as i need. including ones that allows player to manually rebuilt Sanctuary Hills and so many duplicates since what Sole Survivor family and the entirety of SancHills lived were actually Lustrons.

Hi, Thanks for featuring and preserving another Lustron Home. I own and live in serial #1237. I purchased it as my retirement home and actually it is the most comfortable and convenient home that I have owned. The blue and yellow painted cabinet in one of your bedrooms was actually originally in the bathroom. I am so happy that you have found another Lustron to supply many of the missing parts that you need. Lustron sent a crew from the factory along with the specially designed truck to erect the houses, after the slab was poured according to the plans supplied to the buyer. One of the reasons that the kitchens are usually heavily modified is because the dishwasher/ clothes washer combination was an absolute disaster and broke the dishes. So, it was the first thing to go along with the counter and cabinets. All best wishes with both projects.

I'm curious to know what sound is like in these homes. Caleb talked about them being loud in terms of doors opening and closing. Naively, though, I'd expect all sounds to travel pretty freely through the home. If so, then I'd think privacy would be hard to come by.

Is it really not a clunky nightmare ? I feel like an all metal house would feel so cold (physically) and cold emotionally. Also only 1 bath isn’t ideal. Anyways I’d love to know what’s so good about it. Is it a good size for a retiree? Is it just really handy having every surface be metal? What particularly is so convenient about them?

Hat's off to your Dad for taking on such an interesting project. Cant wait to follow along. In case you dont already know, that television will need a full electronic restoration by a skilled repairman before you run it. The original capacitors were made out of wax, and go bad over the years. You will risk ruining the set, and possibly causing a fire if you run it without restoring it. BTW It is from the early 1950's and not a 1949. The picture tubes were round in 49.

we have a couple of small neighborhoods of lustrons here, including one home that was in mint condition and occupied by the original owner until a few years ago. She had a lustron one car garage, and had the original built in tv in the livingroom. There was a volunteer effort a few years ago to track down all of them and include them in the registry. We have lost a couple that i am aware of, but the bigger threat is insensitive remodeling, replacing windows, vinyl siding, etc. Given the popularity of mid century modern, it amazes me that the homes in original condition aren't in greater demand, and make people think twice before making inappropriate changes. A huge issue, though, is figuring out how to insulate them. If your dad comes up with a good strategy for that, make sure his solution receives significant publicity. it will help preserve the remaining houses.

It moved everywhere they stationed my Daddy. “Rolled” in and out over 7 times… traveled up and down the highways from California to Florida, Arkansas, back to Florida, to Virginia and 2 moves in Alabama. It was amazing watching Daddy crank that monster up after we packed and moved everything to one side of it. Then he would hire a big rig, they would hook it up and down the road we’d go. It still stands today 🤯 They surely don’t make them like they used to. One of the original pop outs.

Do not give up that sweet hope! In the early 90’s we started our family in a 2 BR 60’s mobile home which was sweet but small. I did not earn much $, but we prayed for a house. I had just gotten a small Christmas bonus and thought I should pay off a credit card, but “down payment” came to my mind. The next day or so I was driving to church and felt a sudden urging to turn on a residential street, and there was a 4-2 house for sale. We closed on it a month later. A real miracle. Our mortgage payment was $600 more than lot rent. There were some very lean times but we made it. It is almost paid off. I pray for a similar miracle for you both and future kids too!

I grew up in one of these houses in the 1970’s. It was a wonderful home with a very open floor plan for the time. Many think they were cold quite the contrary once the panels got warm the whole of the inside acted a bit like a giant radiator. The big downside was that if you walked in sock feet and got within an inch and a half of the wall you could get zapped with static electricity but that was fun as a kid. That house is still there being lived in by one of my friends younger brother and family. The house next door is a lustron almost totally original and in quite good shape. What an amazing house. I have 3 points really, not trying to teach my grandmother to suck eggs I hope! 1 the vitreous enamel panels can be cleaned like a bathtub and should be easy to restore. Any paint will come off easily if the panels are undamaged. 2 the metal doors should not be very noisy when the runners are cleaned out and lubricated. You may find it's a swish not a clank 😊 3 the largest bedroom might be for children perhaps 2 or 3 boys and the girl have the smaller one or vice versa. Mum and dad would always have the bedroom with the dressing table. Hope this helps and good luck

Yes! That room with the vanity and built-in closets is absolutely the master bedroom. Families had more than 2 kids usually, so there would have certainly been need for a big room to house multiples of the same gender

That's great! I'm so excited for your father! This will turn out to be a great looking home. My friend Richie is very much into mid century homes. his was a 1940s cape cod that was heavily remodeled in the 1960s to what it is today. I'll e-mail you a photo of it. It's quite unique.

The TV won't really need modification to do that (though it will need attention to the capacitors). You just need an RF modulator and an antenna matching transformer. This will let you bring composite video to RF, to the two wire connectors the old TV antennas used. I'm even seeing you can get some HDMI to RF converters as well -- getting modern devices to not output 16x9 content might be the only hurdle. Getting more than two channels could be tricky -- you'll need a converter and playback device set per channel. You'll need some higher end gear to get more channels on the RF band other than channel 3 & 4.

The Lustron homes were awesome starter homes, for the era they're from. Your dad is so lucky that he found an entire disassembled home to use for restoring this one. Y'all could add extra rooms/space if you had enough leftover pieces/parts to do so, but why would you 🤔... The tricky thing is finding original working appliances of the era. The TV is an amazing find. 🥰🥰🤗🤗😘😘 Best of luck to your dad for taking on this amazing piece of Americana. 🥰🥰🤗🤗😘😘 See you in the next video 🥰🥰🤗🤗😘😘

My family almost bought one of these in Troy, OH. Known as a 'Hobart Town', Troy used to be just lousy with Lustrons, but most of them were torn down and replaced over the years. Now, the only one left is known as 'The Riverhouse', and sits on the top of the levy that surrounds the river. Absolutely beautiful home, when we checked it out some years ago it still had all it's original doors, kitchen, etc. Iirc it's now a historical landmark, so it shouldn't be getting torn down anytime soon.

Even old radio commercials that pepper in on shuffle! So fun!

I own and live in a Lustron in Fort Worth TX. We were a model home for the builder and it was erected in March 1949. No serial number was assigned. When I bought it in 2020, it was a wreck. In cleaning the hutch between the kitchen and dining room, rat poop dropped out of somewhere everywhere and every time I touched it. In addition, prior owner had pit bulls and the males lifted their leg on it so it was pretty rusted out along the base about 2 feet up...gross. I did not have the time to source a replacement hutch so we put in a modern kitchen. I love that your dad is going to restore his Lustron and has the time to do it right!

I may be wrong but on the drawer pulls you said they were chrome plated steel but the ones you pulled seemed to be copper or brass plated steel when you stripped them.. I believe in the chrome plating process they first plate with another metal can’t remember but maybe copper. Maybe that’s what your seeing.

Caleb, I love these homes! My husband and I used to live in Lombard IL, which has, arguably one of the largest collections of Lustron Homes in the country. (Or so we were told.) We lived in a Sears home when we lived in Lombard, but we used to walk around the neighborhood and see many Lustrons back in the 1980s. We had one across the street from us. I've always thought they were really cool houses. I know some of the owners would buy industrial magnets to hang pictures on the walls, as it was virtually impossible (and not wise) to put a nail into the metal walls. Where we live now, there were two Lustron houses, right next to each other in the street just behind our home. But, the man who owned them tore them both down, 😥 tried to sell the land, but died before he could do so. Now, where two of these future retro homes stood is now just an empty field. Really sad. Your dad has a great project on his hands. It's such a cool house and it looks like a great project for your dad. Good luck to him on bringing this house back to its former glory! :) I'm guessing he has your tenacity and your hard work ethic and will do this very, very well. I've heard that listening to the rain hit the metal roof at night is a very soothing experience. Your dad has a great project! ( love the Philco TV Set/ Record Player/Radio and the idea about the cycling 1950s TV shows and 50s magazines!) It's going to look so cool when completed! 😊
