What is Crypt of the NecroDancer? (Game Design Retrospective)

Ойындар

The Crypt of the NecroDancer Zelda sequel, Cadence of Hyrule, was just announced so let's take a look back at what defines the original. In this retrospective, I explain the gameplay systems behind the original that makes it such a prolific indie game. I mostly focus on the unique design approach toward player progression systems and mechanics that encourage player mastery. I also discuss its difficulty, replayability, and combat system.

I can't really believe I've had no idea this game existed until now. Normally, I don't do turn based games or indie games, but this one is a gem, perhaps a diamond. Both the explanation and the game got me mesmerized. Granted, I would die all the time but it looks to be fun. "and yet, I really enjoy being terrible at Crypt of the NecroDancer", when you hear something like this, you know a game is good. Think about it, most people aim to be proficient at games they like, but when the game is so good you aren't really bothered by dying.. it's a difference experience. Also, the hedge / grass areas reminded me of chainsaw hedge maze from Zombies Ate My Neighbors, I could hear the theme song play there.

Thank you so much for the detailed feedback Vega! This is super helpful man. I've always wanted to make something like my Cave Story Retrospective and this. Warms my heart to hear you enjoyed it! The quote you gave is one of my favorites. NecroDancer might not be for everyone but it's definitely amazing for that reason.

Genuinely had not realised the second pun hidden in the name Deep Blues until you mentioned it. Mind Blown. Thanks for the great video and here's hoping the wait until Cadence of Hyrule isn't too arduous,

As a big fan of roguelikes, I couldn't watch this without >You killed the grid bug >Went down to the next level >You eat the goblin meat I've had my eye on Necrodancer for a while. One day I'll get it. One day. Along with everything else. @_@ Now I'm curious what you'd think of Spelunky. Continue the roguelike (/lite) experience!

Good video! In depth looks at why a game works or doesn't are great and you get into them really well

Absolutely love this game! Probably played it for 6 hrs yesterday! Also - for being a rogue-like - it has a nice little way of dodging soft-locks (inescapable rooms, whether caused by traps / ice floors / wind spell statues / etc) - the time out floor drop. The other thing about the pacing of this game - with a zone taking 10-15 minutes (if you live that long and aren't speed-running / expert), that fits very nicely into life. Ironically this makes you play more - the number of times you have to walk away from a different game because you finally reach a good stopping point and don't have an hour to find the next one .... This game solves all of that.

Great video! This was a really fun livestream to watch when you played this, but it's also nice getting a more structured look at the game. I always enjoy diving into a game to figure out why certain aspects of it work and others don't. As a kid I'd sit and daydream quite often about making my own video games and how I'd take different things I liked or avoid things I didn't enjoy from games that I'd played. Videos like this one that break down games with interesting mechanics like Crypt of the Necrodancer definitely bring back something of that same feeling, so thanks! I also liked how you switched back and forth from using the in game audio to just letting the soundtrack play by itself at various points. I think having the full game audio at first is a good move as it lets the viewer get a better feel for the actual flow and rhythm of the game which is obviously super important in this instance. Then, once there's time to get acclimated, just letting the awesome soundtrack play by itself draws the attention slightly back from the gameplay to the more in depth analysis at hand. Really good editing.

I had a difficult time getting into this one since I didn't like the music very much. Normally that wouldn't stop me so much from enjoying a game, but with this one it did become much more of a deterrent than usual. :-D
