What Is Ayurvedic Cleansing & How to Do It

Ayurvedic cleansing is different than most at-home-cleanses. When you cleanse with Ayurveda, you’re committing to a mono diet of kitchari (or khichdi) which happens to be delicious, filling, and easy to make. In this video, we’ll cover the benefits of cleansing, how Ayurvedic cleanses work, and how to complete a kitchari cleanse step-by-step.
Feel free to use this as a resource while cleansing and skip ahead to the parts that are relevant for you throughout your journey:

The biggest difference I noticed right from day 3 was all the lethargy, sluggishness , exhaustion that I was experiencing since a few years was gone! Food cravings had diminished and by day 21 I did not want any of the unhealthy foods that I previously craved and ate at least once every week. Not to mention my doshas that were imbalanced were taken care of :) My only regret is not learning and following Ayurveda much much before especially since I was raised in the land that Ayurveda originated from.

Most Hindus follow navratri fasts at change of every season, 6 months apart, twice a year. It's very similar to ayurvedic cleanse. We fast for 8 days, replacing rice and wheat with easier to digest grains like buckwheat and water chestnut flour. All fruits and certain vegetables like yam, potatoes, nuts and cottage cheese are consumed. It is recommended to eat only once a day and take plenty of fluids like water, coconut water, butter milk or juices. Tea and coffee are not allowed.

Ayurvedic diet for Doshas recommends certain forms of specific ayurvedic diets, meant for the various types of mind and body principles. The Ayurvedic diet is one that not only nourishes the body, but also restores balance of ‘Tridoshas’ which is very much essential for maintaining health. According to the ancient science of Ayurveda, doshas are of three kinds: ‘Vata’, ‘Pitta’ and ‘Kapha’. Ayurvedic diet for these doshas includes a series of several kinds of fruits, vegetables, spices and beverages which prevent the aggravation of the different kinds of doshas of a human body. Depending on our dosha, or constitutional type, some foods can be beneficial, and others should be avoided. A nutritious and healthy ayurvedic diet would ensure that all the doshas are in perfect balance for the overall nourishment of man.

Thank you!

Hey there! Since you have trouble digesting the foods you mentioned, an Ayurvedic cleanse that eliminates those foods sounds like it would be appropriate. However, we are not practitioners here at Banyan, so we do recommend checking in with a practitioner who can advise you on finding the right cleanse for you. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for this important question! While cleansing, it is recommended to create restful space in your schedule in any way that is feasible for you, in order to support the body with its natural process of detoxifying. If you can shorten your workday or even take some days off that is the ideal, but we recognize that this is not always a possibility! A great alternative if you don't have time to cook each meal is to make one pot of kitchari in the morning and eat it throughout the day. You can even use a thermos to keep it warm while you are at work!

Yellow mung dal are green mung beans that have been dehusked and split. You can use a variety of beans for kitchari, including red lentils, split chickpeas, or green mung. Thanks for tuning in! 🌱💚 You can add vegetables to your kitchari if you desire you just want to make sure they are very well cooked. The main goal of a kitchari cleanse is to allow your digestion to reset, and vegetables even when well cooked can sometimes be difficult to digest. Great questions! Excessive pitta can manifest as redness or blemishes on the skin and is usually quite noticeable, however, there are other doshas that can become imbalanced and impact the skin as well. For example, excessive dryness is usually more in line with a vata imbalance. Because neem is so energetically cooling, it is not recommended for vata. We encourage you to take our dosha quiz which will give you some personalized recommendations for herbs and products. It's a great place to start! www.banyanbotanicals.com/info/dosha-quiz/

@@kellyfeltzer5402 I was going through some videos today and came across this one. I've been following an Ayurvedic lifestyle for a few years now. I feel I still have a lot to learn but when I first started, I too wondered how to fit it all in. What has been recommended to me and what I followed, was adding one new thing at a time. Letting yourself adjust to it and eventually it becomes routine! When I can't get my morning routine in, I feel like I am really missing something. I've found Ayurveda has helped me in so many ways. I love it! Good luck to you. Never give up. One step at a time.

Hi. I am a big eater and am currently doing a ktchari cleanse for a few days. What caught me by surprise is that I have to "over eat" to get 1000 calories intake, and normal daily intake is 600-800 calories. Great news from the weight loss perspective! Is this very low calories intake part of the magic behind the Ayurvedic cleanse?

Hi Inaki, thank you for watching and sharing your comments! In general, we recommend eating enough while you are cleansing so that you feel satisfied and nourished, but not overly stuffed. Ayurvedic cleansing does not ask that we starve or deprive ourselves, but works by providing food that is simple and easy to digest so that the body can focus on its natural ability to cleanse and eliminate built up toxins. Keep up the good work, and happy cleansing!

Like the Ayurvedic approach, but some nice classes of various kinds and even one on one with a teacher...now muzzled?! - just seem too ridiculous.
