Vata Dosha Diet [10 Ayurvedic Tips for Balance]

Balancing vata begins by balancing what’s on your plate! These are the best approaches to creating and maintaining a vata dosha diet that works for you. By cutting down on vata increasing foods and instead favoring freshly cooked and revitalizing meals, you’ll soon be feeling more grounded and present throughout your day.
These 10 tips will give you an in-depth Ayurvedic perspective on the vital roles that taste, temperature, and energetics play when it comes to selecting food items. We’ll go over detailed listings of foods to favor, foods to avoid, and the Ayurvedic principles behind dieting for your vata dosha type.
We’ll also touch on some easy recipes that make the perfect breakfasts, lunches, and dinners to help you feel grounded, nourished, and replenished. You may even find yourself achieving your ideal weight by incorporating these Ayurvedic insights!
The journey towards a healthier diet begins with one ingredient at a time.

After I went crazy for the past few years with IF and attempting Keto diet (always cheated and always failed overall) I suddenly decided to just go back to just eating moderately and a few times a day. The anxiety went away, the gorging on big meals while trying to fit them with fasting and obsession with eating went again. I suddenly reverted to being calm and cool about food again. And this really helps to continue this way of eating. Thank you.

Wonderful video. I have been actively INCREASING my Vata for most of my life, riding a wave of adrenaline through most of my days. Unsurprisingly, this has left me as an unbalanced energetic mess! It is remarkable that the foods listed are already most of my very favorite foods. I know plan to be more intentional with my diet, and more importantly, my breathwork and activity regimen to help balance my Vata. Thank you for the valuable information.

Glad to see the world is keeping itself healthy by following the Indian Ayurveda routine. Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are Indian Ayurveda terminology. Thanks, Banyan Botanicals for sharing this wonderful information. Proud Indian. As a Indian Hindu girl, I feel very bad, Hindus gave Meditation, Ayurveda, Vedic Astrology and Yoga to entire world...Everyone is highly benefitting from our rich information but western people behave so badly with Indian, do racism...Does India deserves this behave???

Hello human. It doesn’t matter your race but your way of looking at the world is through the lens of hatred and victimhood. It’s ironic that you have this mind when you are complaining and stereotyping western people who want to enjoy Indian practices like these which are designed to foster better mental health, loving kindness and inner peace. It sounds like you’re missing the point of these practices yourself.

We're all the same people, everything people do is made by people for people, not by Indians or Chinese or Europeans or Africans, and we should similarly treat all people equally. I'm not sure it's good to imply that our worth has anything with to do with some group separation, and "proud nationalism" is precisely what makes people look down on people from "the other" made up group. A similarly proud white European Christian is the one who's more likely to place Indians below themselves, and expect praise from Indians for every single piece of Western knowledge and Western science and Western technology that India uses. And they will be proud of Western achievements, not Indian ones. Nationalism similar to your own is what creates the interactions you don't like, and promoting it and being proud of it makes the interactions you don't like more likely Only if we start being proud of our humanity instead of some tribe can we truly praise and appreciate each other

Aha! Thank God, I was just suspecting that although radical food combining rules say to start with fruit, move on to starch, and end with animal protein or nut butters, I felt and noticed that I would do better following the opposite, as a vata, exactly as you have outlined here, beginning with eggs or chicken and ending with moderate carbs like sweet potatoes. I tried having the yogurt at night, and my nails literally fell apart. Switched the fatty protein like yogurt back to the morning, and my nails became hard as rocks again. I'm so vata (I guess an albino one since some say vatas are usually brown, but I think the skin color is not the most important aspect (as in life, lol)! So thank you!

You're so welcome! We're glad to hear that our video was helpful for you. As for raisins, they are fine for the vata dosha as long as they are soaked or cooked. For example, adding raisins with ghee to oatmeal can help counteract the dry quality that can aggravate vata. Dry raisins, however, are not recommended for vata. Here is a link with more information about vata balancing foods that you might find useful: www.banyanbotanicals.com/info/ayurvedic-living/living-ayurveda/diet/vata-pacifying-foods/

HI! Good video :) You recommend root vegetables. I read in one book that root veggies are not recommended for Vata. But in the same book they do recommend carrots, parsnips etc. What are your recommendations? I get no issues from eating root vegetables cooked, quite the opposite; it feels good :) I also don't understand that warm spices are both recommended and avoided, how come? Thanks

  • @banyanbotanicals

    @banyanbotanicals

Thanks, Graleh! We’re not sure which book you’re referring to, but at Banyan we consider root vegetables to be especially beneficial to vata, in part because they grow underground. It is thought that their deep connection to the earth makes them more grounding and stabilizing for the vata dosha. Cooking them makes them even better for vata by introducing the warm element to counteract vata’s coldness. Plus, if they’re already helping you feel good, we encourage you to keep doing what you’re doing! As for warm spices, the key there is to focus on spices that are warm in energy rather than hot. Spices that are too hot, such as cayenne or chili powder, can be energetically drying and therefore can aggravate vata. We recommend referring to this page for more information: www.banyanbotanicals.com/info/ayurvedic-living/living-ayurveda/diet/vata-pacifying-foods/

Great question, Ovi! And it depends. Coconut is considered light, sweet, and cooling. It is oily and smooth and can relieve vata for some, however it really depends on the person. We recommend examining what your primary goals are and begin with supporting those goals. As you start to find balance within your primary focus areas, you can add in/try other foods over time and assess how you feel. For detailed advice and direction, we recommend working with an Ayurvedic Practitioner.

I am Vata dosha: very dry and cold. Eating wheat bread can quickly cause me flu or sinusitis, and I avoid dry stuff and beans. Lentils actually make me bleed. The weird thing though is that it seems corn tortillas don't seem to do anything bad to me. Why is that? I'm Mexican, corn tortillas are a staple of my diet. Should I avoid them?

I'm in a unique position where the antidepressants I started taking a few years ago totally changed my body and in determining my dosha I'm not sure whether I should go by how my body naturally is/was or how it is now. I was skinny, bony, dry, energetic, and absolutely craved the heat growing up-very Pitta. Then my medication made me gain 60lbs+ over the course of a year and that did a number of things, like lowering my testosterone, causing me to feel overheated very easily, and obviously I'm not bony anymore, but my bones are still prone to crack and things like that. Any insights would be helpful!

I was in a very similar position about 2 years ago. I had to do a colon cleanse while practicing the new way of eating, grounding, etc. Fast forward to now, I feel like my old self. Well better actually. I no longer have that bloated feeling, constipation, brain fog, etc. Start with the cleanse. That's what I was told to do and in less than 2 weeks I started to feel the difference. Apparently, the inflammation from medication and the incorrect foods I was eating had to be flushed out of my body first.

Hi Greg! Thank you for reaching out. If you haven't already, I would highly suggest taking our Dosha Quiz. www.banyanbotanicals.com/info/dosha-quiz/ The quiz starts out by determining your constitution, which you would answer based off the time in your life when you were your most healthiest. The second part is determining any current imbalances. While we can't speak to antidepressants due to FDA regulation, there very well could be imbalances at play in your body. The quiz will offer suggestions on how to bring yourself back to balance based off your results. Please let us know if you have any other questions! You can always email info@banyanbotanicals.com 💚

It would be very difficult for me to avoid most of the vegetables that are listed in the red boxes... Can one mitigate the vata aggravation caused by these by heating, pureeing, seasoning or anything else? Like, a cauliflower - if pureed into soup mixed with ghee, yoghurt and spices, would that be considered better (or even good) for vata, or is it still a nono?

That sounds delicious! While for the most part Ayurvedic diets are vegetarian, there are several meats that are grounding and pacifying for the Doshas. For Vata, the meats to favor are those that are nourishing, sweet, moist, and relatively easy to digest. Lamb is quite dry and lean, so may not be suited for Vata-type digestion. Good question! For vata-kapha types, Ayurveda generally recommends eating for kapha in the spring and for vata in the summer and fall. The winter diet for this dosha can take some more effort to determine because both vata and kapha are highly present in the atmosphere at that time of year, so it's good to tune into how you're feeling at that time and determine your state of balance. For more insight, we encourage you to check out this guide for balancing a vata-kapha constitution: www.banyanbotanicals.com/info/ayurvedic-living/learning-ayurveda/managing-your-constitution/managing-a-vata-kapha-constituition/
