Hi Paul :) , I am a foreign pharmacist and I am currently studying for my pharmacy equivelancy test to be a licensed pharmacist in the U.S ... I was wondering if you and fellow pharmacists have any tips for foreign pharmacists :)?

Brian, wouldn’t you say it is difficult to get into informatics without a PGY-1 and a PGY-2 residency? A new grad or a PGY-1 could not get your job.

Difficult, perhaps. Impossible, No. I personally evaluated applications when we were hiring for additional FTEs to assist me in my work. Out of the many applications I reviewed, none had a residency. I invited about 20% of them to interview and we got all the FTE positions filled. Does that mean I suggest AGAINST a residency? Absolutely not. Would I have given more weight to those with residency? Probably. However, there are many factors beyond residency that contribute to the success of a candidate in my personal opinion.

Its impossible without hospital experience. Even with hospital experience its just has hard if not impossible as well.

@@samven582 "Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both usually right". I can't say I'm a huge fan of the word impossible, but I do agree that hospital experience is extremely important, if not more important, than a residency

@@briankfung Brain I have fours years, 2 of which were at large academic medical center. Even with my experience, I still get rejected. Search Epic Willow/LinkedIn on indeed for example, and see the jobs the description on what these companies/hospitals want. They want years of experience and epic certifications.

@@samven582 I definitely don't doubt that. As a fresh PGY-2 informatics graduate, I was rejected immediately to 50% of the positions I applied to. My colleagues who have had years of experience from reputable organizations have also been rejected from many positions. As someone who has personally interviewed and hired other informatics pharmacists, I can tell you that work experience, epic certifications, residency, etc are all factors. However, having 15 years of work experience, 20 epic certifications, or PGY5, will not make me automatically bring someone in for an interview either. The two things I looked at most: 1) Work ethic & personality based on interview and 2) how well they can accomplish the job. This usually isn't a simple assessment based on work experience or epic certifications alone. I usually tailor questions to the job itself and regardless of how great the candidate is on paper, if they fail it, they fail the interview. Navigating the job process is definitely not a fun process.
