On piece movement: in normal chess, think of moving along a file as the Y-axis, and moving along a rank as the X-axis. When you move a bishop, you move equal amounts in the X and Y axis. In 5D chess you can almost move in time (I'll call this the Z axis) and along parallel universes (it's less common to use this axis until you're advanced). So a bishop in 5D chess can move along any two axes so long as it's an equal amount (so Y+Z = straight line up/down + that many moves into the past). Important notes: you can only move to "your" boards, so going backwards in time looks like you're jumping twice as far. Also, aside from knights, just like normal chess all the appropriate spaces between where you want to move and where you are must be empty (but not necessarily on all timelines, just the EXACT spaces you must move through) and must also exist (ie. you can't move through a board that isn't in existence yet). You will notice that queens are absurdly powerful, they can move along any number of axes so you may find random checks are in fact checkmate. On checkmate: checkmating someone in the "present" is often quite hard, it's almost always easier to checkmate them on a board that's already moved. You can't change boards that have already moved, moving a piece to that board starts another parallel universe/timeline, so if you "check" a king in the past and the checking piece can't be captured, that's actually checkmate (assuming there isn't a move that rewinds the present behind where you're checking). This can be seen in the first rook puzzle. The winning move checks the king in the past. In the second puzzle you have the right idea: skewering the kings creates a situation where if he moves his front king out of check, the back king is still in check, and the king can't move back in time again (your opponent has branched timelines more than you, so the new timeline is inactive). If you've been check(mated) and you don't know why, you can click the red/orange ! to see what move your opponent has that you can't stop. On what moves need to actually be done: only moves on active timelines that are at the present need to be done. Active timelines are basically a balance/anti-griefing measure. You can branch timelines one more time than your opponent has and still have that timeline be "active". If you branch more times than that, the timeline becomes inactive and doesn't need to be moved on (you CAN move on it if you want, but I can't think of any reason to). In a world where this rule didn't exist someone could just be annoying and repeatedly start new timelines in the past to stall forever. On basic strategy: if you don't know what you're doing, moving any of the three pawns in front of your king is an excellent way to blunder checkmate (this can be seen in the opening traps puzzles). Due to their movement, you'll often find bishops and knights to be stronger than your rooks. If you've somehow royally screwed up but you still have a timeline branch, you can do a jurassic jump with with your queen (move your queen to an open space that hasn't ever been occupied and jump back to the beginning of the game and try to checkmate from that timeline with your overwhelming material advantage). On scholar's mate: there's a variation on scholar's mate that's completely broken, which is why if you explore a bit in the game there's a bunch of "standard" variations on the opening position which don't lead to degenerate gameplay. For a fun exercise, see if you can find it yourself without help! For a doubly fun exercise, find the counter-checkmate response to the 5D scholar's mate and a refutation of THAT which leads to a game which isn't checkmate, but is at best a draw.

Man, I'm not a great chess player, and yet these rules were so intuitive to me after reading through them once. Certain things are defined as dimensions, and then pieces move like they do in standard chess. The queen has to move the SAME NUMBER of spaces in each dimension it chooses. Pieces other than knights can't move through others, even in time. It's honestly shocking how many chess pros don't grasp this quickly. But as a teacher, it's not shocking at all to see smart people mess up because they didn't read the rules.

The rook vs 2 kings checkmate at 7:30 - I think I understand it. Black has the 2 kings lined up, and so whatever black does, the rook can take one king or the other. Basically you pinned the king to the king. Or alternatively, you skewered the king.

oh! I've actually played this game enough to almost understand it! The goal is, as in most Chess games, to put the board into a state that no matter what move your opponent makes, he cannot prevent his King being captured on the next turn, or Checkmate. What's great about Multiverse Chess is that pieces can travel into the past, so you can set up a piece such that it threatens a King on a board that has already had both players make their move, meaning you can Checkmate a King in the past. Example: 4:18 - The opponent can't make any move in the Present to protect both his Now King and the King in the past. Checkmate. If a player sends a piece from the present into the past, however, you can't actually change the present board because of paradoxes, so to resolve that, a new timeline is created, and both players must play the "newest" timelines until they "catch up" to the "oldest" timeline, or the Present. This can create scenarios where pieces are constantly being sent into the past and creating an ever-increasing number of timelines just to avoid a King being captured in the Present, since the game only ends when a King is unavoidably Checkmated, and you can avoid a King being checkmated by creating new timelines that must be resolved first, giving you a chance to Mate before you get Mated, get it? But in addition to traveling backwards in time, pieces can also move across timelines. This means that RT is actually WRONG about the opponent being unable to win with the board at 0:30, as he can use a piece from that timeline to attack his King in a separate timeline. That's why there's view modes that show the boards standing up next to each other, so you can see the lines of attack possible. From that point you just need to know how the pieces move across time and timeline, and most of them are pretty simple, if you take Time to being another Direction to move a piece in. For example, the Rook can move in ONE DIRECTION ONLY any number of spaces, be it Up, Down, Left, Right, or Parallel Time (so he can go as far into the past as he likes so long as there's no piece in his way, i.e. another piece that takes up the space he's on in the Present at any point between Now and Back Then). The Bishop can move in TẆ̵̥̺́͒́͑̏̌͝O DIRECTIONS, so long as both directions are the same number of spaces, so he can move diagonally once, e.g. Up one and Left one, or Down one and Timeline one. This creates scenarios where a Bishop that you don'̷̨͉͇͖̗͖̙̰̙̝̉t immediately comprehend is attacking your King because he's three spaces Left from where your King was three Turns ago. Once you resolve in your brạ̷̛̤̙̗͎͔̦̪͗̔͆̓͒̏̑̂in that Time is just another Direction chess pieces can take, you can pretty easily plot their movement rules just like a normal Chess game. In this game, piece movement is redefined as a series of directions. For example, rooks move verically/horizontally, or one direction. Moving across parallel timelines or time-traveling counts as a direction, so a rook would seemingly sit still as it moves back in time.

It seems like every strong chess player who has tried this game has really struggled to figure it out. I'd be super interested to see you play it after watching a tutorial vid or something.

They are all too used to the movements of the pieces, and the attempts to predict those based on that assumption that they ignore a lot of the feedback the game is giving. Like he literally had it at the very start with the knight. “Moves two spaces then one in the past”. But they get really, really caught up in that “woah that’s not what I expected that to do”. Which is understandable.

It's really cool because it rebalances the scales and everyone can learn again from the beginning. Wish it caught on more I don't seeing many playing it.

Additional note I haven't seen yet: every board at the end of a timeline has a border around it showing whose turn it is. For example at 12:21, no, black did not move. It is their turn on that board, which is why it has a black border. Black does not need to play until The Present moves forward to that board. Basically, because of how you two moved time, that board is now in the future and you haven't really "arrived" there yet. However, you can click on their pieces to see where those pieces can move if you need a refresher. Also, that knight that disappeared is the same knight that went back in time a few moves and a couple of timelines ago

You make a move for each timeline, but you cannot make more than two new timelines, and moving on inactive timelines is optional. The pieces travel back in time to past boards, which is what creates the new time lines.

The white pillar shows the boards you have to make moves on. It seems that the way pieces move when they time travel is that they move part of their normal moves. For example, the night can either move 2 or 1 forwards/backwards/sideways because those moves (the 2 moves + the 1 move) would make a normal 'L' night move. Pieces also seem to move across along files when time travelling. I believe that the reason you couldn't move your queen to the middle board at 10:19 was because the bishop wasn't there in the alternate dimension (however if it was the bishop that had time travelled I think it would of allowed you to move your queen to that board. The reason I think that you could move your queen to the board on the right hand side (the bishop was still not there in the alternate dimension) was because that was the board that the knight moved from and started the alternate dimension.

i think that it doesn't matter which board created the timeline or anything like that, you can always move to any board, if you respect the rules: Moving up or down and left or right within a board both count as a direction. Travelling back in time is another direction, and travelling between timelines is another direction. Now: Rooks can move any number of squares in a single direction Bishops move in exactly two directions, and the number of squares the bishop moves in the directions must be the same Queens same thing, but they can move in any number of directions Kings can move in any number of directions, but always only one square Knights have to move 2 in one direction and 1 in another direction I'm not sure about the pawns, i don't own the game to check the rules. Oh, and as in normal chess, you can't pass through other pieces when travelling (doesn't apply to knights). The reason behind 10:19 is that the square he actually moved to was one square up, one square right, one square in the past, and one square in an alternate dimension. The square he tried to move at first is illegal, because it is two squares up, two squares right, one square to the past and one square in the timeline direction. But the queen must move the same number of squares in all of the dimensions she travels through.

7:57 The logic is that he can't move his king without setting his other king in check. So even though he *could* have moved one of his kings out of the way, he can't move *both* of them.

So what i can teach u is... 1.) The boarder of the board is either black or white depending on which turn it is on that specific board 2.) There is a big white stripe over the screen, which indicates that that board is the present time, you have to move on each board that is on that white stripe, other boards are optional 3.) A piece moves a certain amount horizontal and vertical. It can use one of those directions to move through time f.e. a white knight can move 2 squares horizontal and 1 square up but in this game it could also move to the second to last white boardered board in the past and on this board 1 up from its position, so a knight on b1 would appear on b2. That's also why the f8 bishop could take your queen on f7...a diagonal move is 1 square vertical and 1 square horizontal, he used his horrizontal movement to go to another timeline and his vertical movement to get from f8 to f7. That does look fun. The thing about more complicated games like this is that more variables are easier to learn than chess in its simpliest form. The old board game Feudal is my favorite more complicated chess-like game; I wish someone would bring that into video game form.

You didn't lose because the queen has been captured, it's because the black queen on a5 on the top timeline checks the king on e1 that's 4 squares triagonally (both spatial dimensions and timeline dimension) Btw scholar's mate isn't the best beginner/AI trap, because that's f-sac: you travel back to the beginning with a queen by sacking it on f7. Then you play Nh3, usually followed by e3 and a quick atk on the king. In this game, material isn't that important. King safety is more important than material. Except in endgames, but those are very rare. Btw rooks in this game are very bad, you should trade your rooks for knights/bishops if you can.

The easiest way to understand is to think about a rook. A rook can move in one direction (aka dimension) as far as it wants. On a 2D chess board this means either -horizontally or -vertically. On a 5D Board this means either -horizontally -vertically -through time -along parallel universes -I cant think of the 5th one rn You pick 1 dimension to move along and stay in the same place for all other dimensions. Bishops and knights are a lot more complicated as you have to pick 2 of the 5 dimensions and there is more restriction on the distances you can move along the picked dimentions.

At 14:30 the bishop on f8 could take the queen on f7 on the other timeline, because it moved in a diagonal by moving 1 along the file and one along the timeline dimension

It's funny, you grasped the first rook puzzle move way faster than I did but since you didn't bother to check out how piece moves were updated the actual game was a mess. Even after blundering your queen you had mate in 1 via Bxf7 on the middle timeline and Qxf7 on the bottom timeline, tying up the middle timeline to prevent it from defending.

16:58 Knights normally move 2 squares in one direction and one more square in another direction forming an L. If you look at the directions of the arrows, the knight is moving 2 timelines in one direction and one square to the side. The knight still has its "L" shaped move, but its through time and THEN space.

So time is being treated as a spacial dimension? In our world time always moves forward, unlike spacial dimensions in which we are free to choose a direction. This game would do well to have a better defined ruleset.

I have been watching your chess vids for about 3 months and it was really cool to see you confused about chess (albeit 5D ) but it was just a giggle. And if you couldn’t get it , all I could do was have a giggle lol

borderline color indicates who's turn is that board is. your pieces moves along files, ranks, time travel, between timelines. normal bishops moves along same distance to files and ranks, while this bishops moves same distance to two of files, ranks, time travel, between timelines. so at 14:05, that bishop moves one space along files and one space along between timelines.

I'd recommend playing through the 5d chess puzzles once you've familiarize the piece movements. all pieces move as they were intended with 2 new dimentions of time and timeline. which the history and parrallell.view can help with. and the curly arrow will direct you to an active board you have control on if you need help centering where you need to go next. as for actual tactics, done line up your kings as those are easy targets for checkmates and keep track of your past kings. those are the kings that are in the most danger as you cant move them. the dimentional stuff and movements you just got to learn with experience

The present is that colored vertical strip behind one column of boards. You only need to make moves on those boards to finish your turn.

I would like to see you learn this and do it again. The top hits on KZread mostly aren't so easy to follow, or don't have enough examples, and definitely not enough examples of how the rules shape tactics and strategy. I feel like this is pretty intriguing but there is an exposition deficit that most of us are unable to cross on our own.

I saw this yesterday on steam and I thought what the hell is this, so glad my favorite chess creator is testing it out

I like it that more people try this game out, sadly its poorly tutorialised in the game. On a good note, triple s games made a very good tutorial that is worthy to check out and the official discord is full of people who are happy to help.

I don't understand any of this! But at [17:00] it looks like you have 3 choices for the knight: (1). make a normal knight move on the board you are on; (2). move 2 squares on the board you are on plus 1 step back in time; (3). Move one square on the board you are on plus 2 squares back in time. The bishop changed the colour square it was on when it moved to an "adjacent" square in a parallel timeline. I think you can sort of see this if these two boards are stacked one on top of the other - it is a sort of diagonal move. Have you seen the video where Hikaru goes crazy trying to understand this mad game?

@17:23 I can understand the knight moves up 2 +1 left or right in regular chess. Down 2 +1 left or right. Left 2 +1 up or down. And right 2 +1 up or down. That’s all the knight can do in regular chess. So, in theory, you can move up 2 (like regular chess) but this time you can move back 1. That or you can also move back 2, +1 left as you can see @17:23. Am I making sense? So in theory a knight can move up 2, +1 left or right or back 1. Like an actual 3D like X axis, Y axis and Z axis (back and forth). This is too much for me

I tried to get into it, but the rules are so poorly defined. I literally spent days and days trying to understand it and even after I did, I couldn't see how my strategies or tactics could be applied consistently. Basically, in any given position there is always a way to solve the position. You and your opponent could play forever and the only way to lose is by one move blunders, there are no deadly sequences.

I've played this game for quite a while, it's actually pretty good, but the rules are really poorly explained. The best way to learn is to do the puzzles. Important rule about how boards work: the border color of a board (white or black) tells whose turn it is on that board. You can only move to, from, and on boards of your color. Boards with a THICK border are where it is currently your move; moving to, from, or on that board will advance the board state to your opponent's turn. Boards with a THIN border are where you have already made a move. Moving to those boards will create a new timeline (you should only really do this once or twice a game at opportune times). Explanation of puzzles: Puzzle 1: at 5:53 you moved your rook to a square that attacked Black's king in the past. The past king can't move out of check because black already made a move in the past and the past cannot be changed, so the Black king in the past is forever frozen and vulnerable to attack. Since the past king cannot move, and nothing can take the rook, this is "checkmate" according to the rules of 5D chess. Puzzle 2: at 6:35 you put the black king in check. In 2D chess, this would be checkmate, but here the black king can escape into the past. Because the black king moved back in time to a board where a move has already been made, this creates a second timeline. Then at 7:30, you skewer the 2 kings with your rook. Black can only move one piece, and thus can only save one king, so this counts as a "checkmate" because you will be able to take one of Black's kings no matter which one he moves.

This was hilarious! I am just as comfused as you are, Nelson. Every time you started laughing, I bursted into laughter as well... I laughed more than when watching comedies... 😅 Thank you for this video. It's a fun start to the new year. As for understanding the game, I think I understand how the knight moves - knights always move 2 moves in one direction plus 1 in another direction, and in this game you're allowed to move between boards, which is a "direction". So if you move the knight 1 board over then you can move 2 more squares on that board, and if you move 2 boards over then you're allowed to move just one square on that board (from the knight's position on the board that it came from). I don't understand how the bishops and queen move. It looks as though they move anywhere, and as many boards away as they want. By that logic, the King can probably move either one square on the board that he's on (as per usual) OR one board over to the same square that he's on in the board that he's leaving.

I did some research and found out how the bishops move in 5D. They can move in any straight line that crosses the boards, so the straight line intersects each board only on one square. For example- the bishop from C1 can move one board over to c2, or two boards over to c3 (it's a diagonal line when you look at it in more than one dimension, if you draw the line between the boards). This means that a dark square bishop becomes a light square bishop on each alternate board. It's crazy and funny! 😄

When playing this 5D Chess, I like to think of movies with time travel. (There’s a certain “Minute Physics” video about time travel in movies, btw.)

a system based opening is something you can play against everything. a theory based opening is one specific position that usually has a name and theoretical moves that got played afterwards. were you have to remember each move as an answer to your opponents move. i can recommend for players that wanna get really good to have a system based oppening as a weapon that can be used against anyone. but specificially looking into opening theories to target certain moves or players. especially in a local club. if you know someone likes to play sicillian as black. you dont need to play d4 Bf4 (the london system) you can just play e4 and get him into a sideline that you prepared. although this is also very dangerous as you now need experiance in dominating positions. (that you likely get with targeting players, instead of the passive aggressive positions that you get with systembased openings were you concede parts of the center)

yeah sadly it isnt really good in telling how to play. also its very hard to understand innitially. but the tactics and opening theory the competitive scene got up to in the official discord is really good. we understand a lot more about the game than anyone could imagine by just looking at the game. if you wanna have basically pure 5 head tactical play in chess 5d chess is for you. positional play becomes more and more important the better the opponents are but the tactics are still very important. they are a lot of positions that become mate puzzles out of the blue.

This was kinda humourous although I was hoping you woulda forfeited and went back to read the piece movement closely at some point. Would definitely like to see it again once you understand a little better

Tips, don't mess with time and dimensions. Butterfly effect, you might end up somewhere crazy. Like as a 1200elo. Stick to regular chess.

The boxes will have a black border or a white border if it is black or whites move.

This whole dimension and time travel makes it already confusing.

What I would love to see is 4-way chess. It's the same basic rules as chess, but with 4 players playing at the same time on the same board (with an extra two back ranks on each side). You can play competitively or cooperatively. Much more interesting than 960 chess IMHO.

@@Tenite but there are no 4-way chess tournaments that I'm aware of (actual tournaments, not online games).

It's pretty fun once you get the hang of visualizing time and timelines as spatial dimensions, but traditional Chess knowledge won't do you much good here. Time travel turns it into a fundamentally different game.

I do wish the game could have explained it's UI a bit better though. This video really shows the issues that arise from purely text-based tutorials/guides.

Yep it took me too much time to figure out how things move... And also for 8$ this game doesn't give you the most importand thing. What this game needs its an analysis board, so that we can move pieces around on demand (both our own and our opponents) so that we can understand how they move... Basically, any piece can move in not 2... not 3... not 4... but 5 dimensions! 4 dimensions of space plus 1 dimension of time, its mindboogling! Its too much... So any piece has movement in 4+1 dimensions...

Hey nelson, i don’t know all that much about 5D chess but I have played it a fair bit. Bishops can move infinitely along a diagonal of 2 axes, which can be along a time axis and a “real” axis. This can result in a bishop of one color time traveling to a square of another color. Rooks move infinitely along 1 axis, including time, but are stopped by pieces. This allows for easy mates with rooks far into the past, as if the enemy king had been on a square in the past and the rook goes to that square, and there hasn’t been a piece there before, that is almost always checkmate. Hard to spot but hard to defend as well. Queens and knights are hard to describe off the top of my head but I’m sure it’s described somewhere. As for how to play, you want to avoid opening diagonals to your king as that can often lead to mate. Fianchettoing the bishop is often the only good way to develop the bishop without consequence, and if you don’t play 1. Nf3 as white or 1. Nf6 as black you open yourself to a deadly queen sacrifice later into the game, so playing that as your opening moves is generally recommended. It’s unwise to castle and develop your queen early as a minor piece can easily time travel to take your most valuable asset.

You made the same mistake as GM Hikaru and assumed you knew how the pieces moved. I would suggest doing the puzzles to get aquainted with the pieces and basic game mechanics
