@@ChrisLawley I think that the philosophy of this is that apple is a profitable company (like every other company) . They must sell more products not less! And any move must not cross that line. Unless there is a worldwide or still-profitable change to the iPad, they won't do that.

Hi, I'm ADHD and to me Freeform was the one most exciting announcement. It's exactly the kind of tool that I'd long imagined and failed to find, like this is precisely what I need my digital note-taking/brainstorming/drafting app to be because of how my mind works when it's planning something - my thinking becomes pretty complex.

I have an iPad Air 4th Gen and i really dont think this chip cant handle the Monitor thing or the window stuff, thats just ridiculous, normally i think Apple makes some choices based on keeping the normal performance of their stuff, but with this, they are really pushing on making you buy a new one, i really dont like this decision. And you as a super fan just excuse them… i seriously think this iPad has enough power to do that, not any RAM limitations.

Apple is squeezing the pigs until they say "oink." But this is par for Apple. I mean, if an old 400 MHz iBook can handle the dock's "suck" effect, I think any iPad (any) can handle drawing a few thumbnails at the side of the screen. The best thing to do is simply not give these jokers any of our money until the rescind such dishonest and arbitrary policies.

Agreed . I got my 2018 iPad Pro in Nov 2019 (no clear sign of next pro model at the time) so I won’t quite give it to Apple that they ‘listened’ to their users as our models are still not considered ‘old’ especially since many consumers end up using their iPads for easily 5-8 years.. Technically this would mean Apple was unable to give full updates to models that are < 3 years old. Would really wish to see Apple providing a concerted effort to still reasonably new model years. The 2021 M1 model still has 80-90% of the functionality to the 3rd and 4th gen models so for most of us simply isn’t likely an upgrade for another 2-3 years. They are eating into their own value-proposition here by excluding us from the full updates..

The M1 iPads are a forked off iPad so no, you are not getting stuff aimed at the M1, which eevryone on YT asked for last year, saying all that power but no features, well Apple has done it. The iPad 2020 will probably be supported until 2026/7 so not sure why you think it will not be supported? It is just not M1, if you want M1 features you obviously need an M1 device. I do hope Apple does a Stage Manager Lite advising that it will be nowhere as near good as the M1 version but will add features. It is just not possible for your 2020 iPad Pro to function as well as the M1 iPads will do in Stage Manager (RAM mainly).

@@andyH_England that's a ridiculous statement, you're telling me that the 2020 iPad Pro is no longer considered "pro" enough to do the m1 stuff because of 2 extra gigs of ram? its literally been 2 years and its not getting any pro features besides the weather app, I can understand iPads older than 2018 they had a good 3-5 year cycle but the shelf life of the 2 year iPad is just disappointing because its like they just had a "filler" year. 2018, then sell the same thing plus an extra camera. when we say we don't think it'll be supported, we mean pro features, because if we wanted basic features we would've bough an iPad mini or iPad regular, we buy the pro to do the pro stuff, and its just a shame apple is gate keeping it just for the m1. so you're telling me I have to upgrade every year in order to get software support that should've been there from the beginning ? they want us to buy laptops instead then fine, but then what's the point of an iPad = its my favourite device but apple is making it obvious they don't care about iPad users because this is the bare minimum of the power, say I buy the m1 and sell my 2020, well guess what next year the m2 iPad will be out and then maybe it only has features the m1 doesn't have. if I'm spending $1-2k per year on a device, I want to be able to use it for at least 2+ years without having to buy another $1-2k device just because some software doesn't work since its gate kept. its just really disheartening because we waited so long for more iPad support and regardless of m1 or not, its a terrible update, we already have multiple windows. do you even own an iPad m1 or are you speaking on behalf of a community you're not even a part of? the iPad at this point is just a glorified media consumption device. nothing more nothing less, and its exhausting waiting for apple to give more features only to give the bare minimum, my iOS 16 update gives me the weather app and thats about it. $1500 for my 11 inch iPad Pro and thats as pro as it gets.

I think it is the RAM, the 4GB base 2018 iPad Pro simply could not run as well with four apps in the foreground and maybe 8 if connected to an external display. Moreso if those apps used RAM intensively like Procreate. Even Apple suggests that 8GB is the bare minimum as they have added memory swap to boost that. I am sure that it could have Stage Manager running in its basic form, but not the way Apple has leveraged it or what they probably hope to achieve with updates. So, no, I feel that the 2018 iPad Pro 4GB version would not work well and as MS has done, with W11, sometimes you just have to cut-off legacy support so that the newer tech is not disadvantaged by having its arms tied by older more obsolete devices (M1 is the new standard and older A devices should now be seen as a sub-set).

  • @andyH_England

    @andyH_England

    2 жыл бұрын

@@_Digitalguy You are of course right, a stripped down version of Stage Manager is possible, but that is def not Apple's MO. It is clear that lower RAM will not perform as well as 8GB plus. The 2018 iPad on 4GB will be limited badly in apps like Procreate that need to use nearly 3GB of that for an average project, leaving little active RAM for the other apps multi-tasking. Swap is fine for inactive apps but not for those in the foreground. For this to function as well as Apple intended 16GB is the best choice and 8GB with swap and restrictions on RAM in some apps is doable.

Stage Manager is more for pro users so the RAM usage is going to be high, the 16GB version being the best option for max utility and performance. Apple has added swap memory as 8GB iPad Pros may run out, which should make sure that they do not bottleneck too badly, but the 4GB/6GB versions would likely be too little especially as they cannot swap memory as efficiently as the M1. The point of Stage Manager is multi-tasking, up to 8 apps in the foreground so this will easily max out memory if these apps are pro. I mean running Procreate on a 2018 4GB iPad would mean maybe a couple of layers before it ran out of memory which means you would have to switch to normal mode making Stage Manager pointless for intensive multi-tasking.

Yes, if all you do is run YT and Twitter with Safari then 4GB will be fine, but Apple cannot assume this is the 100% user case especially as YT comments always say they use the pro for pro work.

I just loaded the beta on my iPad Pro 2020 which I bought late in 2020 not long before the 2021 M1 IPad Pro launched. I thought to myself: If you buy a 1.000€ apple product now, you will absolutely get the latest updated for the next 5-6 years no problem. Now I’ve been waiting for an entire year to finally get external monitor support and now it is finally time. The 2022 iPadOS 16 update I’ve been longing for. But oh surprise! The new features absolutely don’t work on my iPad. Why? Because I bought it one year too early and I won’t get the new features🤩 I like apple but as far as I know my iPad Pro is still almost the most recent iPad Pro and also still a pro. My iPad Pro still has enough ram. And if it doesn’t run smooth just limit it to less apps. My 2012 gaming pc without a graphics card and 4gb of ddr3 ran can run multiple programs side by side no problem. Why can’t my iPad Pro 2020? It makes me mad and definitely sad aswel. I can’t just get a new iPad a year after I bought mine for so much €€€€. I was about to order the Magic Keyboard case from apple just to make my iPad finally my main laptop but nope. Definitely thinking about giving my iPad away and upgrading to an Laptop again. The new update is exciting for everyone that bought the M1 iPad but I didn’t and a lot of others didn’t aswell because apple stands for continuing updates for many years and now I feel betrayed.

I think Apple are just doing what they said they would do, branching off with the M-chip iPads, making them more feature-rich without having the expense and time-consuming problem of making Stage Manager work on other devices. I have a 2018 iPad Pro and it is disappointing, but I get it. If Apple is going to do what techies on YT channels have been asking them, that is use that M1 power, then they have to concentrate on that rather than hamstring a fix for lower-RAM non-M1 iPads.

@@_Digitalguy They did imply it by saying that the M-chips would get more joint collaboration. This is obvious in retrospect as they are like brothers and sisters and is relatively easy for Apple to code for both together.

@@andyH_England I agree. In name, my iPad is a Pro, but I’m happy for there to be two tiers of Pros as it were. I don’t want my 2018 Pro to be slowed down with software not really designed for it. I kind of see it as iPads that can heavily multitask like the M1 iPads and ones that can’t, but I think Apple could have made some tweaks to iPadOS for the non-M1s. In many ways I prefer how my iPad is a device where I can focus on tasks without toolbars, files on the desktop, overlapping windows. Therefore I’d have appreciated some improvements to features like Focus, where the non-M1 iPads can become very streamlined devices

I'm glad to see Apple finally bring features that utilizes the power of the M1 chip. But it kind of sucks how it came too little to late for me. I thought of buying an M1 iPad Pro last year to be my main computer, but after iPadOS 15 being somewhat underwhelming, I ended up getting the M1 MacBook Air instead. While iPadOS 16 has brought significant improvements to where an M1 iPad can actually be my main computer, the purchase of the MacBook Air has already been made. So I don't intend to buy a new iPad anytime soon unfortunately, regardless of how much Apple improves the iPad at this point which is a shame. I really wanted to use an iPad solely, but Apple was just too slow with the changes

It took a little longer to make it work (Stage Manager) and especially as the M1 was new on an iPad there was enough for them to have to work out without complicating it with such a big upgrade. Regarding the Mail App, when I attach a photo it gets sent "embedded" and appears within the body of the email text ... so if it has large dimensions, the person receiving the photo on their phone sees the image at an enormous size and it shrinks down the email text to a tiny size in relation to the dimensions of the image. So whenever I send a photo with an email, I have to use Safari to sign in to my email account via the browser because the browser version allows proper "attachments" instead of "embedding" the image. Am I missing something? Is there a way to attach photos to emails without embedding them ... without having to jump through a bunch of convoluted hoops of having to remove the photos from the Photos App and copy them to some other inconvenient place ?!

Agreed that it's a RAM issue more than anything else with regard to the M1-only features. There's a big difference between 4 or even 6GB of RAM compared to the base 8Gb in the M1 Air and Pros. Man, I remember getting an extra ram chip for a Core2Duo MBP and what a difference it made! A line has to be drawn somewhere and I think this is a reasonable one. I'm looking at getting a refurbished 2020 iPad Pro for one of my parents to replace their ageing MBP as these will have better longevity with 6GB RAM, but I don't expect them to have the full features of the M1 models.

I replaced my personal windows laptop with an ipad pro 12.9 2020 and slowly found it‘s limitations: no monitor support, lightroom and photoshop apps lacking features which were already available on PC, crappy files app etc…slowly Adobe caught up and now after the latest update i don‘t need Affinity anymore nor am i switching to Capture One (beta tester here) but the iPadOS limitations were still there. Ipad OS 16 solved most of these..bummer that my 2020 ipad pro won‘t get these features i want but i was kinda planning to either upgrade my iPad to the M2 version when it comes out or switch to a macbook air. Now i‘m convinced: sticking with the iPad and getting the M2 when it‘s out, probably in autumn BUT, would i be better off with an 11“ now that i can properly connect a monitor to it, for an even more portable device, provided the 11“ will get the same OLED display as the 12.9 or would would i feel cramped by the smaller screen? A friend has the current Air and it seems like such a light tossable device…like a bigger phone…well guess i‘ll check his M1 Air when iPadOS 16 comes out…

Features i’m looking for in the coming betas up until public and full release, specifically for stage manager is well maybe more than 4 apps at once for instance 8 videos or something this is just a cool idea obviously too many to be useful for anything else other than multi stream watching. Onto the features that need to be added customon audio levels for each window opend that has an audio output there is plenty of room in control cenre to make this happen also the use of dual video audio. The windows need to be resiable down to a smaller square on the y axis as they look much like iphone windows which is fine but for smaller things like spotify or calculator, even a timer needs to be smaller obviously safari is a big one. Right now you can have instances over a main app by opening them then going to the dock and pressing and holding on the app to get rid of the instance and pht it into the backround and pressing that app in the dock once more emables it again in the size that was set once it was opend. The ability to show all instances of. A window which already has an option it just doesnt work, an easier way to get rid of all tabs either in your current windowed layout or all together as right now its just a hassle. Theability to fully customise where you want windows on the screen that don’t snap unless all size windows eg 4 notes apps snap together making it symmetrical An option to hide the homescreen in the backround completely, more touch sensitive window movability overall more options in the 3 dots the current ones are great. The ability to have windows opend on top of games which cureently does not work making it actually worse than split view in that wense even though backround audio is much cleaner as you can press the dots for games now Resizing games needs to ahppen or in general apps that cannot be compatible with split view (not slide over) previously, the keyboard is super buggy for the touch input as k’ve said before this is most likely a known bug as it diss allows you to use text in any form on a swindow When you add quicknotes to the screen with the movable window and then you drag it towards an a]edge of the screen like pip to shows a small arrow and a small rectangle making it even easier to open and re use those apps in the windows, (this doesnt have to run in the backround or it can be limited to apps but would be amazing and could allow over 8 apps on the ipad as for the pro xdr display the 8 windows comefrom the ipad so there’s no reason tonot let us have more, it would also be coll to add different colour codes for these little arrows much like you see in textbooks and sticky notes essentially. More features for the applepencil todirectily apply to the stage manager other things such as closinga recent window switching between two or something simmilar since the double tap feature isnt very useful in most cases. Etc i’m sure that if done right the i[ads multitasking and new stage manager can be taken to the next level to make it even better than traditional laptops in its own unique way of course.

If you want the real answer: never. Craig even said in the keynote on Monday that they aren’t looking to supplant the Mac with the iPad, which includes keeping some software Mac exclusive.

They are working with LumaaFusion, allowing them to import projects to FCP in Macs. I suspect that Apple has given them every help they can as they have no intention of a FCP iPaad edition. They are avoiding treading on the toes of developers as if they do it once it means another developer will think twice about releasing an iPad app if AApple is going to usurp it down the road. For that reason alone there is near zero chance of FCP for the iPad (at least a full version).

I’m in the disappointed 2018 iPad Pro ‘camp’ this time around with not getting full features of iPadOS 16. Although I am upgrading this year anyway. My issue is one of upgrading my 2013 MacBook Air OR getting the next iPad Pro.
