In order to take full advantage of their newest M series iPads, Apple needs to seriously consider having a mode similar to Samsung Dex, where you plug the iPad into an external display and it converts it from iPad OS to Mac OS. These M series chips far surpass the demands of iPad OS and you would never be fully utilizing the chips in these machines unless there were a desktop level OS on board

I mean, I like that they are allowing external monitor support without it looking like crap. Personally I also like that it stays separate from macOS, but then again I don’t really plan on using my ipad with a monitor because I have a mac. I do see how that would be awesome but apple isn’t going to step on the toes of the macbooks I don’t think.

I personally think Apple should come straight out and clarify what their plan is with the iPad. They clearly don’t want to make the Mac and iPad overlap too much, but this is also having the side effect of putting the iPad in a weird no-mans land that has some but not all of the features of a Mac, and those that do exist are incredibly neutered. I’m also not a huge fan of Apple stiffing their existing customers that have perfectly functional iPad Pros that have an A12X/Z chip in them. I just don’t buy Apple’s explanation that these chips are “too weak” to do something as simple as properly scale displays and support a *basic* window management tool.

Not to mention that I've seen windows managers and even some desktop environments on GNU/Linux run comfortably on 4 GB and some even run on as little as 2 GB of RAM (such as LXQt)! There's no excuse for Apple to do that, because even though the M1 iPad Air doesn't support virtual memory on the 64GB model, it still gets Stage Manager. And yet the feature should be there for the 256 GB iPad Air 4th gen, but it's not. And the 2020 iPad Pro has 6 GB of RAM, even if Stage Manager was limited to external screens only, I think it would be far better than what exists for those iPad now. Because it is honestly embarrassing and frustrating for Apple to do this. As for me, I'm currently using a "real laptop" running EndeavourOS, an Arch based GNU/Linux distro. Sure, there's no touch screen on my laptop, but if I need one, I can buy a portable external monitor that would solve that problem. I haven't used an Apple product in the past month because there's nothing I can do on iPadOS or macOS that Linux or Android can't. Apple killed off the iPod with the iPhone and then the iPad, now they need to fix iPadOS or just lower the damn price. Because to be paying laptop money for something much less capable than even a Samsung Android tablet really goes to show Apple's issues.

And didn't Apple put an A12Z into a developer's version of the Mac mini at WWDC 2020 so that developers could starting developing for Apple Silicon before M1 arrived? There's the proof right there. Forget just window management. An A12Z can run full MacOS. 🤣

@@cameronbosch1213 The problem Apple has is if they allow 6GB 2020 iPad Pro with no swap to run Stage Manager, then it really is not going to do well when you multitask with pro apps. Say you use 4GB of RAM for DaVinci, and the rest is system RAM. What happens when you open another pro app? You cannot use compressed RAM in pro apps that are in the foreground, so DaVinci will crash (jetsam) when you start using LightRoom. Imagine what YT-land would make of that, with 1000's of videos whining about how bad it is! Apple did the right thing, limiting to M1. But I do agree that they need to allow proper secondary display support on older iPads, and maybe find a solution to the RAM limitation on the 6GB older Pro iPads, even if it is a Lite version with a warning on RAM when jetsam is likely.

I’m having second thoughts about further upgrades to the newer iPad Pro when it comes out because I think the laptop would be better in terms of multiple windows and the iPad was a really cool laptop replacement when it was also $600 cheaper than a Mac laptop. Now they are basically the same price so not sure if the iPad is all that relevant except for people who want to use pencil related apps like procreate or Notability, etc. Also I like that Adobe Photoshop is transferring more features to the iPad app but with a laptop I get full versions of that and light room. At the end of the day is your review going to be basically it’s almost a laptop but not quite as good in terms of multiple windows support? That’s where it seems this is headed so would appreciate your input on why stay with the iPad Pro.

  • @friedpicklezzz

I agree. This is why I think the regular iPad is the best product they have, not the iPad Pro, because the former doesn’t compete with full laptops on pricing. It doesn’t imply to be a full laptop replacement. Instead, it implies to be a great media consumption and light computing device for that specific audience and fantastic for children. The iPad Pro with keyboard is extremely expensive. For that I prefer a laptop and have all the flexibility of such a device to my disposal. I of-course do see the value to artists who draw on it, but I can’t even get a stick figure right so who cares 😅

Ipad is still an ipad and not any more capable than what came with the original iPad OS (from an OS point of view, of course the hardware is better), the last few years they've just been enhancing existing workloads that can already be done on the ipad but there's really been nothing to enable new workloads. If you could already live off an iPad, fantastic, these are great QoL, if not, it won't happen any time soon, get a real laptop.

Written September 3, 2022 Stage Manager isn’t all its cracked up to be! Yea, sure you can have four apps open in a single window, totaling 16 apps open via a total of four windows just from your Home Screen via a toggle(you can double that via external monitor), but if you think about it, Split screen can already do that to a lesser extent by just open having 2-3 apps open at a time on older iPads. Yea, you’re losing out on a potential 13 other apps that you can work with on from your Home Screen, but most ordinary people can manage just fine with Split screen, or side by side view. Stage manager is really only for those people that do constant heavy work on their iPads for work, and Apple knows this which is why they limited it to M1 iPads, as not only is there a IPad Mini M1 coming out in 2023(making the ipad M1 conversion 75% complete) but those people who want the M1 iPads usually have big money to spare because heavy work! But the lightest Mini can become a mini cromebook via Bluetooth keyboard or a bigger iPad with tv via cables

I was getting frustrated with full screen external display support that just didn't work. I have a new 32" 4K monitor with USB-C (and power delivery) and the cursor would just freeze-every time-on the external. Wouldn't let me open apps on the external. I had to move them from the iPad to the external. I was perusing a Reddit thread when I came across the answer to my issues. I use Assistive Touch on the iPad to enable external mouse gestures. Once I turned that off everything finally worked as it should. Just a tip to add in here.

They can't allow unlimited resizing since the apps don't support it. Apps that support split view can be sized to their supported aspect ratios only because they'd look as ugly as Android apps otherwise. You'll note that iPhone apps can't change aspect ratio at all. Neither can apps that dont support split view. To allow unlimited resizing Apple would have to force developers to do so.

I hate that my first comment is just a question but I’m wondering if iPadOS 16 will address the issue of the Magic keyboard not responding after using split screen. So many people have this problem it almost seems universal but I have to close my app or sometimes restart my 12.9” iPad Pro M1 if I want to continue to use the Magic keyboard and not the virtual one. This is one of the most annoying computer problems I’ve ever encountered in my 25 yrs using Macs. From the posts I’ve seen, Apple doesn’t care enough to fix the problem. Any fixes on the way or suggestions other than not using split windows (which is ridiculous). Why have an ipad if I’m going to run into this constantly. Thank you for your videos and even reading this far (if you were able). 😉 I’m just hoping that iPadOS fixes this. I can’t imagine using the new Stage Manager with this problem still present. The batteries in these tablets mqy not last as long as they used to if the are charging all the time. I believe tablets and phone are built for short term charge and use until the next charge.

I'm still very bothered by the fact that this Fullscreen display thing is such an ordeal. Back in the day my lil ol Rog phone 3 could do fullscreen (forced desktop mode) , charge itself, and have a c slot to spare for wired external peripheral action (storage, headsets, what have you) I switched to Samsung's iteration this time around right after the ios16 stuff came into fruition. Let's not kid ourselves though, the iPad is in its own league. 10 years ahead wouldn't be an exaggeration if someone claimed it. But for me at least, after waiting across three generations of the pros for it to finally feel like the jack of all trades sort of portable machine, it's really hard to defend all the oddities and shenanigans that you have to simply learn to live with to make it work for you. This is tech still, right? Non-human. The flaws aren't characteristics one should have to learn to adore. Even if one could, it's certainly off-putting to be given the cold shoulder this often.

Agreed. The iPad is still the best tablet you could get on the market, but it has too many compromises and restrictions particularly with iPadOS for it to be a laptop replacement. Got myself an iPad Air 5 to replace my 7 year old MacBook Air, but iPadOS is lacking in many areas especially in file management and the lack of desktop class apps. It's such a shame that a truly capable hardware is held back by an intentionally limited software, so it won't cannibalise Mac's sales.

Hi Chris, have you ever tried Excel on iPadOS 16? It is awful. It was not working on 15 either. And the Numbers app is also so bad. This device can never replace a laptop, too sad

Stage manager requires Virtual memory swap which is M1 exclusive, so Virtual memory swap a.k.a. page file, swap space, or paging file was available in windows since XP I believe. So the fact that it's not IMPOSSIBLE as they are trying to explain. And M1 iPads have faster storage....... The paging file was there when SSD was not even a thing. Any iPad has pretty fast storage. yes, they could have said that anything lower than 128GB will not support it. that could be understood. And why KZreadrs are justifying this bullshit. Apple promised from the beginning that iPad Pro and iPad as a whole will receive desktop-class apps. And all we got was Pretension. "Let's pretend iPad is a computer " even if its no were close because we caped it as per software because we have to sell our MacBooks as well. KZreadrs be like " it's great for taking notes and writing emails and watch Netflix " YAAA on a $1000 piece of hardware. Is there a shortage of Notebooks? Were is photoshop, AutoCad, Premier pro, After Effects, and 3Ds Max. NONE. Tech giants getting away with such bullshit is amazing. Dynamic island ha? iPhone PRO feature ? isnt that laughable. looks like a Cydia Tweak from 2013.

The ipad pro just does not make sense. They made a device that was way overpowered for its intended purpose as an iPad and are now trying to shoehorn Mac OS features into it. Watching you use this with an external monitor just had me thinking why not just get a macbook, it's more useful in every way and it's not like there is a price premium anymore. iPad Pros are crazy expensive with the keyboard and accessories.

iPadOS an iOS 16 are such a disappointment. nothing new, just few gimmicks that aren't even wort a mention. they used to add cool new features, but to be honest, all that's 16 brings, could have been added in point releases of 15
