Congrats on getting a review unit. It’s good to see deserving KZreadrs getting noticed
Yours is the first and only iPad review vid I have watched. Absolutely loved it. Super glad I preordered an iPad Pro. Can't wait to get it!
I am still satisfied with my old 2018 Ipad Pro. Even if it is an performance boost with M1 chip it is still very fast on old model, and before M1 was introduced nobody complained about speed and responsiveness.
Finally someone answered the question about last year magic keyboard. Thanks for confirming.
Congrats on early access, Chris! 💫

Literally the only person that mentioned the Apple Pencil charger when talking about moving the FaceID array to landscape.
Your review is really the best out there. Jonathan Morisson gets close, as he did a really interesting take with music production, but having someone who really uses the device for everything is invaluable!

I am a doctor doing preparation for board exams. I got my iPad Pro 2020 11" with an apple pencil recently and it completely changed my workflow. I really love it. Last iPad I had was the original Air and I cannot believe the extent to which iPad software has evolved since. It really is a powerhouse computer. Great review by the way.

Can you describe your workflow?
@nik198x

@@richardrolson2713 I mainly study Clinical Practice Guidelines this period. Previously I tried to study them on my Mac but the vertical screen and the suboptimal annotating of PDFs didn’t work for me. I couldn’t remember much from what I read. So I ended up printing in color every one of these PDFs and annotating them with classic color markers etc. For a revision I went again through all of the pages and found out which sections I had highlighted as important. Of course when going outside of home or at the library of my hospital I could not carry more than one or two of these booklets with me. Now with my iPad pro I have all of the guidelines at every single time with me. I import the PDFs in Goodnotes and annotate with the Apple pencil and the various modes it has (ball point pen, color highlighter etc) without changing tools. When I finish studying one PDF (which I find happens much more quickly than on paper) I screenshot just the important parts of the file from inside the app and then include them all in a photo album with a title showing what the content is about. For revision I just study the photo albums which contain screenshots of all of the important stuff. I still have all the original content a tap away though and already annotated, in case needed for reference. Hope this helps.

I watch MKBHD’s video review of the iPad, and then I watch the king of iPad reviews to get the lowdown on how this iPad will benefit the iPad only crowd.
Got my iPad Pro last week, before I used to look at iPads as oversized iPhones, and that’s how they were when they first came out. However, this thing IS OSSSUMMMM!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I contemplated getting a 14- or a 16-inch Mac M1 Pro. Since I have a powerful PC, I ended up getting a 12.9 M2 iPad Pro with the Pencil and the Magic Keyboard. I absolutely love it and I barely use my PC anymore, since I am not a student or an editor. Being able to detach it from the keyboard and use it as a tablet or journal with the Pencil is simply amazing! My only gripe is the battery life and a lack of Fn keys on the keyboard.
Great coverage Chris, glad Apple got this to you ASAP. Great to hear about the iPad, from the iPad professional himself!

I really like the ambiance of your lamp.
I'm a little disappointed that you didn't mention that despite the increase in ram, the software is limited to only use 5gb. You should do some side by side speed tests, I've seen a few and there's little to no difference between the M1 iPad and even the 2018 iPad. For multiple generations now the Pro has been limited by it's software, not it's hardware. The M1 chip is like buying a supercar but doing the same commute with the same speed limits that you did everyday in your second hand car. Under the hood it's superior, but in real world usage it's throttled to the same level. Even the files transfer not stopping in the background anymore is a result of an iPadOS update, not a hardware update.
So happy that you got the review unit Chirs! You deserved it! Holding my breath for improvement in Files app at WWDC.

hey! would you say that as a student it would be enough having the iPad Pro + keyboard or would it better to just have a Macbook (I have an iPad and MacBook rn but my iPad broke last week so I'm thinking about selling my MacBook so that I'll be able to buy a new iPad because I really need it since I take all my notes in class on it)
I normally don't care for apple products. I'm a Sammy fan boy. Seeing this guy be so passionate about the ipad and its capabilities, rather then praise it just because it has an Apple logo, is making me reconsider my current situation.
Buying a 12.9” iPad model for the Retina XDR display and installing a matte screenguard such as Paper like over it! Sounds ridiculous!
Ok, the background file transfer improvements are huge!

You are the iPad authority on youtube if not the whole internet, because you actually use it for everything! I got so tired of tech journalists who only watch videos and write emails on their iPads make uninformative reviews.
Thank for this review. We need a reviewer who uses the iPad as his/her primary computer. Most reviewers don’t have this experience and I value yours. People who don ‘t use the iPad as their primary work device and don’t know how to use the iPad are not qualified to review the device, in my opinion. While I use M1 Macbook Air and an 2019 11” iPad Pro, the former for writing and lectures and the latter for graphics, emails, web browsing, reading, youtubing, emails, and texting, I spend equal time on both devices, about 8 hours a day each, often simultaneously. The two are not substitutes. They are complementary.
I'm glad you like it. I can't say that it is a computer, it is close, but until that day comes, it's an iPad.

as a photographer, the inability to have a workflow on ipad that allows me to keep my thousands of photos of a job on an external ssd is a big problem. Ipad OS forces you to import photos into device memory. And that's one of the few things holding me back from buying.

I just found you. Brilliant. Insightful. Personable. Trustworthy. Well done. I subscribed. Looking forward to learning more from you.
His ipad config is 1,799 plus tax. Thats wild for just the ipad itself.
Still the most frustrating thing even with centerstage, is the fact that the camera is not centered on the iPad. You always are looking off to the side when you are having a FaceTime call with someone and that drives me insane. I would guess that a majority of people using an iPad use it horizontally , I really wish they would factor that in when it comes to making video calls and put the camera in the middle of the iPad instead.
Does the magic keyboard consume lots of battery?
Firs†, you planted the seed to consider an iPad-centric workflow. Then I saw you speak at Suburban Chicago Apple Users, you fertilized the seed and it began to grow. Now you've presented the flower fully blossomed. Thanks - now I have to sell a kidney! 🥺

We all know that you are the right person to do iPad reviews. Keep going!
Thanks! Getting hold of one of these is the major problem, ATM! Looking on Apple, July now for delivery and at my carrier just "out of stock". It does look like another winner for Apple and maybe a supercycle? My main take is the extra RAM as this will allow similar RAM management to a desktop OS and is much needed. Obviously, the M1 chip is another killer feature as it puts this iPad leagues ahead of the competition, including the Tab S7+. The display and cameras with LiDAR make it the go-to tablet for those with disposable income as it now has a display matching OLED's advantages.
I have seen a ton of IPad videos and reviews trying to decide if I should buy the 12.9 M1 IPad Pro 1TB vs the MacBook Air 1TB 16GB of ram and this video was the one that helped me to make my final choice. I am doing 99% of my work on a 6th gen iPad and the M1 Pro it’s just much better in every posible way. I know 16GB of ram is overkill for IPad OS but I want to keep it for at least 5 years so it will make it future proof. Great video
I think Center Stage is a solution in search of a problem, the only time I am out of a video call frame is when I want to be, I don't want it tracking me then. The camera placement really needs to be fixed, nothing short of having the camera in front of your eyes is going to make video calls look normal. Either they figure out how to have the camera and Pencil magnet co-exist, or they move the Pencil to the side where it's a more natural place to store and retrieve it from and gets it out of the way when you are opening the Magic Keyboard. Glad you mentioned iPad OS, the hardware is obviously awesome, we'll see what Apple has planned. Great vid!
Absolutely amazing video I’m currently using the M1 2021 iPad Pro 11-inch and I’m currently working on it to be my daily driver computer wise
I really wish safari gets updates to get custimizations for the home page. You know wallpapers and stuff.
I like to point out that the issues you are referring to on your old iPads are very unique to you being a content creator and needing to manipulate very large data files. I have also been using my iPad Pro 2018 since its release and I have never, ever....ever ran into a lag or any sort of sluggish experience on it. It's still insanely blazing fast! I use it for content creation, drawing/painting, media consumption and gaming (Geshin Impact, Fortnite, etc.). While I know from a technical standpoint the latest versions of the iPad might be much more powerful, but I can't imagine them being any better for my purposes. lol, funny how all these iPad reviewers recommend Paperlike, honestly I'm an artist and when I bought the iPad I bought a bunch of screen protectors to try out to see which gave me the best experience for drawing and what was closer to drawing on actual paper...the Paperlike was not only the most expensive, but it was the worst out of the 10+ I bought online. The best one was from iCarez on Amazon.
I own the iPad Pro 2020 11 inches with Magic Keyboard, and Apple Pencil 2. The editing software I use is Lumafusion. I agree with you about the background transferring files. Also congrats on getting an early unit.
Where did you get the sticker on the back side??
Thanks for delivering the good stuff
Brilliant video.. Apple deffo chose well, can’t wait for the new videos
Would you advise the paperlike (or other matte screen protector) for someone who does photo editing on the iPad? Also is it true the nibs of the apple pencil wear down faster when using a matte screen protector? I wanted to use one to have a better feel when note taking and drawing, but I don't want to have the colors of my screen changed and screw up my photos because of it. Thanks for the help.
A solid video and review, Christopher! Mine is on order, can’t wait to get it and see the speed difference for myself. Opted for the black keyboard again just because I figured the white keyboard would show wear a lot more quickly than the black.

Wow, i just found your chanel but thank god I did it! Great videos, very good quality and insights of the product! Do you think that 12.9 inch 2021 M1 ipad pro still worth to buy in late 2023?
I thought this way too, when I first got the iPad Pro / magic keyboard / pencil (*ipad pro 2nd gen, 10.5” 2017) that I was spending more time writing on the ipad than i was on my macbook, because i really like the feel and experience of the Smart Keyboard, especially the magic keyboard once upgrading to an iPad Air 4 with the magic keyboard, and yes, I thought it was possibly the only device I needed it. It ran my smart TV, i used Nebo to transcribe a lot of my handwritten work into editable text, etc, what many before me have thought when using the ipad and Smart Keyboard: this could end up replacing my macbook! I really thought this until one day the charger for my MBP retina died, and despite how nice the iPad Pro was for me and how nice the magic keyboard and iPad Air 4 are, you really REALLY realize how nice and how much you’re losing when you *don’t have access* to anything but an ipad. I feel it’s a different evaluation when you have an ipad that you’re working on but you still can access you’re MacBook if you want to… but when my charger needed replacing, i had to wait a week for the replacement to come in the mail and let’s just say, I would never say such things again :P haha, though i could see these one day being the go to device for many people, they’re as powerful and more portable than a MBP, and with the power of the latest iPad Air and, hell, the iPad Pro from 2017 is still a formidable device - it will still be the best at what it is, a device existing in the space between a phone and a laptop, for me at least. Even with the magic keyboard and the hub I wanted and the stand, all the trimmings, I realized all we’re doing is recreating with accessories and novelty … a laptop. laptops will always be better laptops than convertible tablets, in my opinion. I’ve enjoyed your videos as a relatively recent convert to Mac, since i was able to get the MBP in April and the iPad Pro shortly after, and while I really enjoy working on my iPad Air and i do think the magic keyboard might be the best feeling keyboard experience I’ve ever had in my life, the features and the power and the functionality of my macbook can’t be replicated yet by a tablet, especially not with the limitations of iPadOS not experienced by users of the MacBook Pro. Though it is a bit silly to need one to be the other when we can always have both. :D Cheers
Greatly explained … keep it up and love your content !!!🔥❤️🔥

I was thinking about getting the iPad 11-inch M1 for pretty much exactly what he does and this video makes me wish I got it while simultaneously being happy with my decision. iPads are mainly for the ecosystem and I'm not leaving my Note 20 Ultra behind. I'd rather get a Macbook Air for less than it costs to get the iPad, magic keyboard and Apple pencil as I'm eventually going to replace my laptop, but a tablet that can do much of the same is perfect right now as I mainly work from the cloud. iPads are literally supposed to be a go between from laptop, iMac or desktop to mobile. I don't believe that is true for all tablets. I need a light laptop replacement. I decided against the iPad because it doesn't have MacOS or desktop computer features and the cost of the aforementioned keyboard and Apple pencil being comparable to devices that check all the boxes or are just a powerful with MacOS in consideration of the Macbook Air. I'll keep watching it until it gets those updates in iPadOS which most people say will not happen. I'm still optimistic. I mean, why would Apple put an M1 chip in an iPad?
Count yourself lucky. My iPad has 4x the geekbench score of my old MacBook, but I’m still using that for the vast majority of everything because I need all the pro software support, the storage space, proper multi-monitor support and all the I/O, so it’s completely impossible for me to use my more powerful iPad as any kind of replacement or alternative. It’s great for drawing, notes, and some basic stuff though.
Yesss. Great review, Chris!

You holding it like it very light and not heavy! I gotta get to the Apple store and see and hold it myself.
Such a wonderful clear review. Thank you!
Thanks … I just recently got a 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 … I was really hoping they would move the Facetime camera to the horizontal position for the 2021 version, but the didn’t. Center Stage is nice; but while it frames you while moving, the camera still grabs you side-faced. I never use the iPad in a portrait position. I will wait to upgrade when Apple moves the camera … which really makes sense given the Magic Keyboard.
Great and thorough video. Thank you. I'm waiting for my 1TB 12.9. I'm also gonna have to swap my new magic keyboard for the white one. It looks a lot better than I thought it would. I'm Excited! Also, how can I get that widget you have. It has all the info I want to see (at a glance). It's perfect.

Very important tip : if you have an paperlike screenprotector and use an apple pencil, you defintly should change the screen protector because it breaks ur apple pencil with time, and you defintly dont want to spend another 135 bucks on another pencil right?
Great review, liked and subscribed 👍🏻
You pointed out interesting points which goes unnoticed even by A category KZreadrs.
You did a great job with Paperlike (06:59) as I cant even see it on your iPadPro? How did you manage to get no border on screen and an invisible texture?
Good info. Watching these older videos since I just bought a [3rd gen] 11 Pro. But why, why my brother, would you put a paper-like/paper-feel/matte anything/ etc screen protector on that beautiful 12 Pro screen? I’m guessing the future generations of Pro will have some sort of camera for the most used mode; landscape. At some point, I hope all models will. At present the lens does a great job of following movement.
I wish someone would do a review for Microsoft office like an actual user that needs it along with excel. It’s always video editors or students.
Great video as usual. How does the Paperlike screen protector change the display with the new Mini-LED technology? Does Paperlike have anything in the pipe to utilize the Mini-LED technology that you are aware of? Thanks!
