PART 1: • What if Russia Was Mus...
For some reason Vladimir the Great picked Islam in an alternate timeline. The ramifications for this were tremendous. Probably destroyed the idea of Russia at all. Would Russia turn to Central Asia? Would Novgorod be its own independent state?

Considering French influences were heavy in Russia during peak Empire, I wouldn't be surprised if such a relationship would also exist between the French and the Northern Slavs (Novgorod). French philosophy would flourish in a similar way I'd imagine.

Under Muslim rule + 100 more years, I wonder if you'd see more influence (100 more years of expansion = bigger Alaska) or less (a big reason Orthodoxy stuck is it got mixed up with the local culture - might be harder to do with a religion that comes from a Desert).

I would really like to see a video on Poland-lithuania in this timeline as well. Like what important changes would happen or not happen to the Commonwealth. Would they win during the swedish flood( mid XVII century) which caused them to give prussia independence and seal their fate by doing that, or maybe they could colonize America , since livonia( today latvia) as a vassal of Poland-Lithuania took a few Islands that the dutch later occupied in the carribean so that is a possibility. And also later if we assume they won the wars with sweden what if the King of the Commonwealth used his claim as a member of the swedish dynasty(Vasa) to take sweden into a personal Union, would a Polish-Lithuanian-swedish Commonwealth, around the entire baltic sea be a possibility? And during napoleon, what would be the changes seeing as prussia and Austria as well as russian empire wouldn't really exist, so this would also change how it turned out. In short i would like to see the perspective of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in this timeline. Ending my monologue, Thanks for another great video Cody. I like to often think about the different possibilities we could have ended up with during major events in history, and that is why i love this Channel so much for 4 years now :D

I really can't see Poland becoming a major colonial power, since their position on the map just makes it too easy for naval trade to be disrupted and their primary concerns would be in Europe and the Middle East, meaning if they want to expand why not bring some Islamic Russia or Ottoman lands into Poland.

  • @C.R.A.B

@@anvos658 true, probably the ottoman lands part would be most likely since Commonwealth and turkish forces fought eachother in vienna and there were many conflicts in moldova as well, just like the tsars against sultans fought later for the same lands , so i think the same kind of power struggle for the black sea would occur as in our timeline but instead of the russian Empire against ottoman Empire it would be the Commonwealth forces contesting the turks. overall in the later years of even the first dynasty of the commonwealth most of their interests was in the south like kingdoms of hungary and Bohemia with jagiellonian dynasty or moldova and the black sea later in the years of kings from the Sobieski or Wiśniowiecki dynasties.

I think Prussia still eventually gains independence. The Hohenzollerns were already becoming a major power in Northern Germany and were quickly becoming a rival to Austria. The Hohenzollerns were also elected dukes of Prussia when it was established as a Polish Vassal state which contributed to its eventual independence. I could see a potential Swedo-Brandenburger alliance invading the Poles instead of Sweden and Russia in this period. The result is likely land lost in Livonia and the West instead of the East. Perhaps East Prussia is connected to Brandenburg much earlier, leaving Poland-Lithuania almost entirely landlocked to the Northwest. They still almost certainly have a Black Sea Coast. An important thing though is that Poland likely doesn't get entirely partitioned. That was Frederick the Great's idea but with an Islamic Russia he would likely think twice and would rather have a Polish-Lithuanian buffer to the Muslims. Austria, considering their wars with the Ottomans, likely backs a Polish state's continued existence. Chances are Courland and Lithuania remain in Polish hands along with Ukraine and Belarus, but chunks of the West will likely be lost in early wars with Brandenburg-Prussia. In the end, However, Poland-Lithuania survives as a state. Sweden probably holds on to Finland, but probably loses Estonia and Livonia in wars with Novgorod. TLDR: Poland Lithuania doesn't get partitioned but Prussia still gains independence.

Uhm, I dont wanna nitpick or anything but your Novgorod from this timeline would have a majority finnic people in it, not slavs especially when they would accept protesthantism which they would. The finnic peoples around petrograd only started fading in the 18th century so I think in this case Novogorod might even abandon its slavic roots and integrate with the finnic people of the region creating a meld between those people. Also you have painted Estonia and Livonia as Novgorod territories much earlier than Russia really conquered them which further indicates that it would probably evolve into something unimaginable for us. So what I am saying is Novgorod might form into a finnic/slavic union uniting Finland, Karelia, Ingria, Estonia, Livonia and Novgorod lands under one banner without the russian finns dyeing out.

Ofcourse the high class and city people would be speaking russian and melding into slavic culture but the peasantry probably wouldn't especially if prothestant scholars begin sermons in the local language. The same dynamic happened both in finland and estonia where high class and cityfolk spoke a different language from the peasantry. Now without Moscows russification of the eastern finnic people, they wouldn't fade into slavic cultures because it would have very little merit for them. Using west finnic people from our time period as an example is better than lithuanians/poles atleast imo because of the similarties in the cultures.

I think I could see Novgorod taking a similar role to the Republic of Venice, becoming the de facto trading republic of the baltic and arctic seas. One thing that would be an almost permanent problem for Novgorod, would be sea access, like for Russia in our timeline, but with no way to get even close to the Black Sea or the Pacific, I could imagine Novgorod being much more focused on conquering or gaining access to various baltic and scandinavian ports.

Idea for part 3: where does Galicia-Volhynia fit in all of this? It was the westernmost Rus' successor state and the one that influenced modern-day Ukraine. To defend against the Golden Horde Galicia (later Ruthenia) formed strong relations with the Papal States and at one point considered adopting catholicism so that the Pope protects the kingdom and declares a crusade on the Mongols. That never happened, of course, but if much of the Rus' is muslim and Halych and Volyn' still were influenced by western European culture and Philosophy, Galicia would adopt catholicism and a crusade would happen, but it would just be in northern Ukraine and Belarus. There would be a 3-way divide in the Rus', and neither Poland nor Lithuania would dare touch Ruthenia, even if it was in a civil war as brutal as the Galicia-Volhynia war of 1340-1392. Wars between Russia and Ruthenia would still happen but one would never conquer the other, and it would quickly devolve into a cold war.

Given the fertility of Muslim Sultans, ROmanovs could've never been installed on the throne. Rurikids would've still ruled over the lands. Who knows, maybe so it happens that Ivan the Terrible is still born and came to power, but with a large number of brothers and half-brothers and large number of sons he would have comapred to what he had in out history. Again, this aspect comes into how courtly life and royal marriage would work in Muslim Rus - like in out history or more Ottoman-like, with concubines and etc. (I say Ottoman-like, because i have almost no knowledge on how actually Arab, Persian and Egyptian Sultanates worked in this aspect. I only know th basis of Ottoman court life.)

This is quite symptomatic of how much Rus' borrowed from their former Asian overlords. Yes, a Protestant Novgorod close to Germany and Scandinavia is quite probable! About Poland, I'd see its binational republic evolving in a federation of three entities, the third one being Ukraine. And about the shi'a/sunni schism, in spite of Persian influence, all the Turcic emirates stayed Sunni, with a multitude of Sufic sects, so I guess the emirate of Moscow would be the same.

A Norse/Algonquian nation-state starting up during the Middle Ages would be very interesting to see, and it could conceivably have happened had the Norse not left Canada. Ditto the ripple effects that such a settlement and country could have had on other Amerindian polities. The tribes could have easily adopted ironworking from the Norse and perhaps horses and other Old World livestock as well. And how would such a country play out in matters of world affairs? Ditto if the Nordic countries had stayed pagan instead of adopting Christianity. What if the Norse never converted to Christianity but instead kept worshiping Odin, Thor, Freyja, and them?

The NATO bombing of Serbia was very unpopular in Russia and pushed it towards greater anti-Americanism. So we would likely either have a Russia that is still democratic, or if we are going to see it slip back into authoritarianism, it would probably be very different - much more aligned with the West, something along the lines of the Philippines under Ferdinand Marcos.

Just gonna throw this out there, but one other thing I think could happen in this scenario is the Teutonic Order ends up packing up and moving into Livonia. I mean, in our timeline the Teutonic Knights came into Prussia and Livonia specifically to fight the Pagan Livs, Lets, Samagallians, etc. and later also the city of Novgorod. In our timeline, the conversion of Lithuania to Catholicism kinda hits the Teutonic Order in Prussia hard cuz, well, their whole purpose there was to fight the pagans, who are now Christian. This is further exasperated following the Battle of Tannenburg and later the 13 Years War. So what I’m saying is maybe, just maybe, the Teutonic Order adapts to this shift and moves it’s headquarters from Marienburg to Riga as the new center for crusading activities… possibly this takes place after they lose Marienburg in the 13 Years war (instead of moving to Königsberg like in our timeline). Possibly they just immediately accept Lithuania’s conversion to Catholicism in the 1380’s and somehow maintain friendly relations with Poland and Lithuania (a bit far fetched, but maybe). You know, this whole scenario is just kinda fun to play around with.

Pretty late to the party but the Persian influence and motivation towards the drink might cause an Islamic Russia to adopt Alevism or Alihwism. Alevis and Alawites both permit drinking, and the Alawites in particular practice many of the same traditions as Christians. If Russia were to go in this direction it'd reasonably give them some play with cultural connection to Persia, and also a helpful minority in the Ottoman Empire to say they're the protectors of whenever they decide they wanna beat on them. I think the most interesting effect this would have would be to give Persia a big buddy to the North they can call in whenever the Turks try to "reconquer their lost lands" from when they controlled Persia. This might motivate the Ottomans more towards looking towards Europe where there are less gigantic empires with other gigantic empires as allies, opening up the possibility of the Ottoman Sultans deciding to put that extra bit more attention on taking the last pentarchal city within Christendom, Rome, and the Golden Apple of Vienna.

If part 3 happened, I can see how it will go for Islamized Alaska in this scenario. While no immediate effect at first aside from Islam arrived in the Western Hemisphere a lot sooner than in our timeline, the fact that it is located so far away from the Islamic Russian Tsardom will definitely given the land a unique position. Heck, it might become an independent polity if the Muslim Tsar is focusing on holding the western front at the moment. If that is the case, I can see that the proposed Mormon state, the State of Deseret, might become a thing in this timeline because if the Mormons heard of an independent Islamic Alaskan state, they might appealed to the ulama and the Muslim Emir of Alaska for help to preserve Deseret as an independent polity due to how much they have in common with one another. And as a result, the Mormon State and the U.S might be in competition with one another about the expansion to reach the West Coasts and also to try to establish political connections and diplomatic relations with this Emirate of Alaska between both countries as well.

18:03 This is something I always think about. When the Europeans feel that they are losing an Islamic or Asian power. They make the continent of Europe smaller so that it looks like they haven't even entered Europe's borders. In the past, Anatolia was considered a European region and Europe extended to Jerusalem and even the Caucasus to the borders of the Persian Empire. But the continent with the passage of time began to shrink little by little. This gives you a hint that the continents are not divided geographically. But culturally.

@@i_likemen5614 The Romans, then why did the Gauls, the original inhabitants of France, migrate to the Balkans and Anatolia when we were slaughtering them?

@@user-cg2tw8pw7j The idea of Europe didn't really exist during classical Rome. And the Gauls had no idea of "Europe either"

Hey Cody, when are we getting "What if Japan had remained neutral in WW2?" or "What if Japan had been part of the Allies in WW2?" It's very much needed and would be really nice to watch.

i would doubt that, even if Japan did not poke the sleeping Tiger at Pearl Harbour, they have been in conflict with the USA in the Pacific already do their imperial ambitions and the conflict with britain and france in south east Asia, that they would be joining the allied side. for that we would have to go more the different route and ask: what have to change so Imperial Japan would join the Allied Forces and not the Axis Powers? And for that, idk. Lindbergh would need to run for President and win and join the Axis, maybe backed by Ford

I would have liked to have seen what if: Japan either fared worse during the Russo-Japanese War, or even outright lost? Hirobumi Ito was either never assassinated, or at least survived the attempt from An. Japan never becomes fascist (and what needs to change). Too many cases of alternate history with Japan still going fascist, I want to see something similar to the latest game of Sakura Wars where Japan remains somewhat democratic (or at least nowhere near as facist and xenophobic as RL), darnit!
