What I Love and Hate about the Rolex Batman - GMT Master II Ref. 116710

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Previous Video: Q&A No. 3 • Video
Hi Guys,
So I've had my Rolex Batman (GMT Master 116710 BLNR) about 2 weeks, so I thought it was time I did a review of the watch. A lot of the watches I buy have 2 purposes, to be amazing watches and to increase in value / make money. The Rolex Batman is a great investment watch and will increase in value.
Let me know what you think about the Rolex Batman (116710BLNR) vs the Rolex Kermit (16610LV),

@@jasonsensation3469 If we're talking an A. Lange datograph, I agree. A GMT II that he said he intended as a daily? No. Life is short, wear what makes you happy for as long as you can. Steel watches will become "yours" with each scar. People get scars, it's very special for your watch to get them along with you. If someone is too concerned with the value loss associated with a non-mint conditioned watch in regards to resale, then perhaps that person should not have gotten that watch as a daily driver... I've had my name down for a white faced Daytona for quite a while now still a bit longer to wait mind with the length of the waiting list but that will be worn and enjoyed regularly as well

I’m curious as to your thoughts on how that is different from buying a watch to almost never wear it and instead keep it in a safety deposit box to eventually sell it one day.

Batman fan all the way. I'm daily wearing mine since about 2 1/2 years now and it stayed in near mint condition. Those things are made strong so don't be too shy about it. Fun fact: I closed at least 1 business deal because of this watch. My profit was about the price of the watch so I kind of think that that watch already paid itself. It might helped to close other deals that I'm not aware off. So think about that: for the money side, it could be more profitable to wear it than to preserve it. Awesome video's cheer from Canada!

Great video, as always, Adrian. Good to finally get your review of your new pride and joy. One comment however, I think you got the bit about how the ceramic bezel reacts in different lighting conditions the wrong way around. For me, in low light conditions the bezel looks almost entirely black, whereas in sunlight, the blue really pops. You need to change your home insurance: It only costs a few quid a year to add a watch of that value - £7 from memory when I added my Batman as a named item. That’s probably less than you’re paying for your safety deposit box. You’ve got to wear your watches to get value from them. I don’t agree with keeping them in a vault.

Those (Kermit and Batman) make an impressive one-two combination! I personally would not put my watches away in a safety deposit box as I want to see them and wear them anytime I want. I do understand where you are coming from. I sometimes think and worry about my watches at home while at work or away on trips (I only bring one and maybe sometimes two) even though I believe they are safely hidden. Anyway, it's obvious you enjoy and even excited (& giddy!) having those two. Wear them and bond with them well 😊

I would love to chime in about AR coating. I have a 116713LN and I'm actually happy it doesn't have an AR coating. You can have AR coating both to top and bottom side of crystal or just bottom. I wouldn't want it applied to top since it scratches. As for bottom, I have a Longines Legend Diver that has AR on the underside and while it does reduce reflections, you can notice even slight amount of dirt or fingerprints on it much more easily, whereas non-AR GMT crystal hides them. (You can also notice how cyclops looks dirty much sooner due to AR under it.) As for movements, I am actually happy I got GMT with 3186. It is a tried and tested workhorse movement, that was used for a long time at this point. 3285 might have issues (for example MT5652 in Tudor GMT seems to be having some issues already). I have no doubt it will be a great movement in a coupe of years when all potential issues are fixed, but I'd steer away from first year samples. Same as Omegas 2500. Great movement based on workhorse ETA 2892-A2, that as we all know had issues, so it has A,B,C and D versions.

Great video as always and great watch. One reason why the Tudor GMT quenched my thirst for a Rolex GMT was the power reserve in line with the 3285. Previously I wanted the LN, but had I got it knowing the newer watches had the longer PR would get to me...a little

It will feel part of you, you will see, do it the right way, wear it as much as you can and enjoy and you will see what a watch is all about, that watch! Daytonas, green subs, Pepsi etc they are all nice, but once you have it all, that one will always make you think twice! Phenomenal watch, the First one from Rolex! Enjoy it and congratulations...

So, hypothetically, you own two Porsche 911’s: One from 1980 and the other from 2018. The emerald green 1980’s car is an anniversary vehicle, that is highly sought after and has literally doubled in value over the last few years, but after buying one that is better built, modern, built like a brick and better for everyday use, you decide to drive the 1980’s one more and treat the 2018 model with care? I don’t know man…I’d be parking the 80’s car away, putting a dust cover over her and using the VW (explorer) and the 2018 Porsche occasionally instead ;)

Do I think the Kermit will be worth more way down the line? Maybe slightly, yeah... but don’t expect any watch or car to come close to matching the stock market in the short, medium or long term. That’s without even considering maintenance. I don’t knock people who keep watches in the safe or cars in the garage. I get it, but it’s not for me. First off, bad analogy, a car can get wrecked and that's it. A watch gets desk rash which can be buffed out to original condition. (Check the youtube videos on that service by Rolex). Both car and watch need oil changes, tho. Second, It's all relative, I have four watches I rotate out for daily wear that are more expensive than the Kermit and I throw on an Everest rubber straps on my Deepsea so I don't get desk rash on the links and buy rubber strap APs, just because it's fun to have a blue watch one day, a yellow watch the next and an all black one to spare. At first you are apprehensive about walking around with a valuable watch and after a while you I don't worry about it..because 98% of the people don't care what watch you have on. It's like changing your shirt for work. Finally, I have a Rolex Pepsi with that same band as his batman. I agree, it looks sparkly in the showroom with the colored LED lights and rather plain walking around in daylight or at night. So it gets worn less. However, the pepsi red pops a bit more than his batman black. If the green fits... wear it. It won't decrease the value unless you are an idiot and taking it out in the water. Get a fun looking plastic G-Shock for that.

I was under the impression that they didn't put AR coatings on the sapphire because it can wear off (its resistance to wear and tear is nothing compared to the sapphire). I've had my BLNR for 2 years now, and I have just had the cyclops replaced under warranty by Rolex, but through the AD, because the AR coating was wearing off and leaving a little cloud on the lens (the watch is otherwise in excellent condition). I'd keep an eye out for this if you have one, and if it does happen push the AD because Rolex WILL replace the cyclops - it's becoming a known issue.

Both time pieces are beautiful Adrian, I prefer the Submariner but that's in my personal opinion, glad you mentioned the movement as in a previous comment I made, this is my dilemma on should I wait until Basel to see what Rolex has up it's sleeve (no pun intended), as it will be my first new Rolex purchase, I've come to the conclusion of waiting and to see what specifications (mainly movement) Rolex may do for the 2019 Submariner date, after all, undoubtedly I am going to have to wait for the time piece so a few more months before ordering will not make too much difference. Great video 👍 as always, have a great, safe weekend, Eddie.

I keep my "collectible" cue sticks in a safe, so I get it. I'm shopping for my 1st Rolex and was set on the Sub 116610LN, but I've become absolutely smitten with the Batman. I can appreciate the Kermit (as well as the Hulk), but I prefer black & blue as color choices for my watches. I do like Yellow & Orange as possible accent colors, but I digress. I definitely prefer the Batman. I'm hoping to make one my 1st Rolex...and hope to get a new 1 as you did. Thanks for the great videos.

I was in the same boat at you. I loved the GMT (batman or all black) more than sub but when I saw it on my wrist the GMT's numerals on the bezel was just too busy and I thought the sub was just more refined and looked 'better'. So GMT may look better on paper but go try it on and see for yourself. If it's part of a rotation get a GMT, if you want an every day tool watch get a sub!

One of the very few channels I love getting home and watch! Interesting points you bring up with your relationship with the BLNR. It’s a great timepiece...but not sure if part of that greatness is down to its rarity or ineffable intrinsic beauty...or most likely both. I agree with you on the Kermit, the Sub has a more clean, reserved look...it doesn’t have to do much aesthetically to still emit this amazing horological aura. Thanks for continuing to share your passion!

Many Rolex design choices are about longevity, since people keep their watches for decades. 904L holds a polish and resists corrosion better; thicker lugs can be polished more often; if there's no AR then it can't be worn away; ceramic bezels hold their colour for longer and don't scratch.

Hiya it,s The Len.Just a thought ref. AF coating? With the sub more so.If underwater does refraction make AF coating work against the wearer .? Just a thought ? Wouldn't apply to GMT I guess ? I agree with you on the movements. As I suggested ref.a car it's a bit like buying a new beamer but your mate brought essentially the same car and price with a better lump under the bonnet but both the same series? Good point.Cheers.Len.

I’ve heard that the anti reflective coating only works as intended on a domed crystal and wouldn’t help the flat Rolex crystal. That would explain why it’s on the cyclops. Omega, in comparison, uses domed crystals and AR. Not 100% sure this is accurate 🤷🏻‍♂️

guess what ...read your comment. I’ve heard that explanation before too: that they intentionally let the light reflect that way to be more attention grabbing. As far as I’m aware Rolex has never addressed the question directly and it’s been a widely debated topic in the forums for many years. Do you have a source? You say that’s straight from the horse’s mouth, but do you have a link to a statement officially made by Rolex about that? I’m not saying you’re not correct, I’m genuinely curious and I’d love to hear a definitive answer on this.

Great video as always! I have to respectfully disagree about the AR coating. Maybe just having it on the inside of the crystal would be ok, but I hate AR coating on the outside. My Omega MK40 has AR coating on the outside of the crystal and has a ton of scratches which looks like absolute trash when the sunlight hits it. I greatly prefer watches without AR coating.

I managed to get hold of a Batgirl last year, on a jubilee, big mistake! I have just fitted an all brushed oyster, it's been completely transformed. A couple of slight criticisms though. I also own 1675 pepsi, and a 16710 black. Both have a red second hour hand. I know it's esthetically pleasing to some, but I find the blue hand to be too dark, and less functional. The larger crown is okay, but I also prefer the more shapely, slimmer lugs of the vintage models. After all, it's an aviation watch not a dive watch.

Hey Adrian! Great vid as usual! I also believe that Rolex will change the movement in the Batman, and actually that is the reason why I also pulled the trigger on one (ashamed to say I keep it in a safe with stickers on). I really wanted the 3186. The new 3285 movement sure is a more advanced and technically a better movement, but it uses the new chronergy escapement that uses a lighter pallet fork with much smaller pallet stones, which in theory could be significantly harder to service. The maintenance could therefore only be done by Rolex, which might be a problem in the long term if you like to get it serviced by your local watch shop and keep a good control on what's done and not done to your watch (we've all heard these stories of tritium hands being changed by rolex). This is not a verified information and this kind of debate goes above my competencies, but it's been mentioned to me. Please correct me if I'm wrong! Cheers !
