@@retailnashville684 Likely, this is true. I will say that I know a women who owns a Rolex who received really snotty service because the person who purchased the watch for her bought an after-market, diamond-studded bezel for her watch back in the 80s. Mind you, she was taking the watch in for a major service (shattered crystal, etc). That type of elitism is pure garbage.

It's not Rolex to blame ... it's the ADs. Rolex "sells" 100% of the watches it produces to its ADs. Why would they produce anymore? Think of the effort and money involved even to produce 10-15% more watches, for what? They don't have to. It's the ADs who are selling their watches out the backdoor to greys that is driving this market up. Walk into any Rolex AD and the shelves are empty, it's embarrassing for the brand really.

I feel this. I got my Explorer 1 about a year ago (preowned, of course) and that would be my one and done with Rolex, but I am still tempted by that GMT. Tons of other brands make great divers and everyday watches, but I'm still looking for a proper travel GMT (independent local hour hand, rotating bezel) and rolex seems to make the only one that isn't huge. I'd go with the Tudor but it's just too chunky. Other brands, please step up the GMT game!

Totally agree with you Brandon. The big difference is rolex watches hold their money, so if you get bored with it, your 10k stays in your pocket. If it's a grail watch that's an important aspect to many buyers. If you buy an omega for 7k say, then you might only get half back 5 years down the road. It's shit and all that , but it's true. If you could go into an AD and buy the rolex just like that , then they wouldn't hold up in value anywhere near as good as they do now. It stinks , but they get away with it, because they are so desired. Personally when you get one in hand ,they are rather bland in some ways, but always seem to wear well. Omegas are nice but always quite chunky, I like my rados, because their quite elegant and always well made. I've got a captain cook and it's similar in design to the omega 3oo bond watch , but slimmer in profile. It's also incredibly light to wear on the leather strap for an automatic. And under 2k it's not going to break the bank either !!!

I've shopped at an AD rolex boutique, where all they sell is rolex, no other brands or products. Establishing a purchase record can be hard if all you can do is drop by and drop 10k during a visit because all they do is sell rolex watches and nothing else. Most normal people can't do that. Rolex ADs are now fully reserved for preferencial clientele, this fact is for sure annoying but at this point it is indeed fact.

Went into an AD in Sept to inquire about a Polar Explorer I'd been wanting for a couple of years. The saleswoman went to ask her boss if a special order could be made since requesting them from Rolex was not always a slam dunk. She got the go ahead, I paid for the watch and was told it could be 6-8 months before it arrived. I got the call on Monday it was in, and am going in tomorrow to pick it up. Never done business with that AD before, but was never bullshitted about the wait and the supply issues. It'll all depend on the AD you go to. Some want you to show them love before they take care of you, some will be honest with you and hope to win your business that way. I'm yet to see any specific hard evidence that Rolex themselves encourage their dealers to act that way. If you have a bad experience at an AD that's the AD/salesperson's issue, not necessarily Rolex.

I scored a 41mm stainless sub date and a Pepsi yesterday from an AD. I stopped into 4 or 5 stores and hit it off with the staff. They didn't have what I wanted as was expected. I ended up buying a thousand dollar gold wedding band while I was at it. I obviously let them know to let me know about any steel sports models that come in. They called me 2 months later with the sub date. Went and grabbed it. I had stopped into the store a few other times after that visit just to say hi. Literally only a few times and within 2 weeks I got the call. Caller ID said "AD company name". I answered the phone "What do you got for me?". They said they had the opportunity to sell me a Pepsi. I was walking out of the store with the watch within an hour. These watches are special not only because they are awesome but because they are rare and hard to get. They are also one of the best ways to store value with something that you actually wear and use. Once you mix in the Grey market values of either of the two watches I mentioned I would consider the 3 hours I spent driving to and from the store and time in the store worth the investment. Also when you look at the long term value increases on these watches its a bigger no-brainer.

The waitlist is imaginary. Just find an employee at an AD that you vibe with, leave a Google review with your name, and hype them up. Get their card before you leave, and send them a text message thanking them for taking the time so that they have your direct line, and you stand a good chance of getting a watch whenever they get one in. Also take the time to go into the store once a month, or send a follow up text saying “Hope all is well, just wanted to let you know that I’m still in the market for (reference number), whenever you get one in” I’ve purchased many Rolexes from an AD included a Pepsi, Starbucks, Root Beer, and standard black sub. It’ll all about your approach, and leaving a lasting impression on the employee behind the counter. Hope this helps you get a watch in the future!

100% agree with you. I was one of those "average" people on the street that finally became successful a few years ago and wanted to get a Rolex as a celebration of the success. Went to the Rolex dealer and was politely told to pound sand. So instead I bought a much less expensive Oris Aquis Date with a green dial (love the look) and I've been happy ever since. Now that I know more about watches, instead of Rolex, my next watch will be another Oris or a Grand Seiko.
