What Happened To NASCAR On FOX?!

Спорт

Over the past two plus decades FOX Sports has been a mainstay as the TV provider of at least half of NASCAR’s schedule in each of its top three nationally touring series. With that there is a large sample size to look at with its coverage as well. This has proven to show that FOX’s NASCAR coverage was getting progressively worse and worse as the years clicked off to the point that for many fans it is darn near unwatchable at home. So I want to look into that today, I want to look into what happened to NASCAR on FOX?

The biggest problem I had with the broadcast was they COMPLETELY MISSED Harrison Burton's flip. They were so concerned with the car spinning down toward the inside retaining wall, they didn't even see or acknowledge that car going over or if there even was a big wreck. It reminded so much of the ESPN "Kurt's getting the worst of it!" blunder where they are so concerned with Kurt Busch they miss Elliott Sadler's hard impact. Just terrible camera work. There were just times where they just missed the action and I was like "I didn't even see that!" or "Where did that come from?" They just weren't on their game, this is the Daytona 500! You have to have the kinks worked out.

@@caseysmith544 I’ve noticed that many FOX enthusiasts will always throw shade off by saying “Both are bad” without much reason on why NBC is bad. Looking at NBC, they’re far much more into the racing than FOX is. NBC uses double screen replays/onboard cameras, making sure there’s still a screen on the racing, which is something FOX only does full screen. NBC uses graphics to emphasize the racing (just look at Talladega 2021 with the 6 screen onboard with the big full race screen), while FOX hasn’t come near that. The one big flaw NBC has is missing action in the back of the field, which FOX has gotten down. FOX has had a fun role in NASCAR coverage, but their production has been just hard to tolerate and hasn’t improved much in the past years. NBC just makes me feel like I’m into the race (excluding their IMSA coverage) far more than FOX has in recent years.

Well Leigh Diffey is a broadcast legend in his own. He always "brings the action" as the lead announcer. He did great in his cup races with NBC. His first race in cup was one of the summer races in Michigan. I think it was Larson's first or second cup win there. Everyone was raving how he was announcing with energy and passion. I think the best trio in open wheel was Diffey, Steve Matchett, and David Hobbs. Comparison to Larry, Mike, and DW in the 2000s.

If you watch an F1 race, it’s very professional, very serious in tone and the graphics packages are lightyears ahead. Commercials are very limited too. NASCAR is becoming political, goofy and trying to be too broad. Keep nascar tailored to motorsports fans. Give them access to commercial-free broadcasts. I do believe how the sport has been displayed on television has lowered interest. Every time I take someone to a race who has never seen one LOVES it. They won’t watch it on TV though.

My gripe with this past weekend's coverage comes from how disconnected it seemed to be from the actual race. The commentary didn't seem to line up with the camera work. Over the past few years it seems as if the broadcast has also declined in their pit road coverage in particular. It seems we never know why teams are off the pace, behind the wall, or trying strategy. If Nascar/Fox/NBC wants to attract more sponsors, they need to give more TV time for the backmarkers, even if it's only to interview the driver after a crash/part failure.

NASCAR on FOX was so creative back then. Now it’s just lame and you see creativity here and there. I feel like NASCAR broadcasting in general is crap. Yeah, the modern-reboot NASCAR on NBC is better than FOX, but they have issues too. There’s still way too many ads and the scheduling is dumb if the race is too long from red flags. So, tbh. The biggest thing that I notice when watching old races compared to new races is that back in the day, fox would talk to us as educated viewers. They would talk about the handling of the cars, the exact adjustments being made, and the strategy crew chiefs were employing throughout the race. they would cover the whole field, big names or small names. I'd say their biggest problem right now is the tone. It is WAY too goofy. Nothing feels like it's a big deal. NBC makes everything feel important. Fox makes everything feel worthless. There's no dramatic tension or weight to the broadcast. This ultimately comes down to the directing and producers at Fox Sports, not the actual on air talent. I'll also say that the lack of track presence sucks. The green screen studio looks sterile and bland, and having less and less people at the track hurts a ton. The Hollywood Hotel was awesome for pre-race (plus the Speed booth outside the track) and they had 4 people covering pit road, so each reporter had 10 or 11 teams to worry about. Now they only have 2 reporters trying to juggle 20 teams each. It's too minimal. Their broadcasts feel like the bare minimum effort, and honestly, they are putting in the bare minimum effort

I've never been as enamored with Fox's coverage as many NASCAR fans seem to be. They've always been way too focused on stupid gimmicks. It was tolerable at first because they were kept to a minimum, and it was fresh and fun, but it didn't take them long to let it take over their broadcasts. The fact they were the best said a lot more about the other broadcasters than it did about Fox being great. But the coverage of the actual racing, the camera work and showing us what happened, was usually top-notch, so the weaknesses could be overlooked. Now that's started going downhill, they've lost their biggest strength. NBC has its own problems. They have way too many people on their broadcast, Steve Letarte dominates the booth, and NBC itself doesn't really seem to respect NASCAR. And there are way too many commercial breaks on both of them. Weren't the stage breaks supposed to cut down on green flag commercials? Boy, that was a total lie.

Starting last year, the running order that is on the far left of the screen shows the running order of the cars. Good idea except it gets stuck on showing the top 20 exclusively, only occasionally showing the cars running on the lower 20 running order. There are so many times that you have to wait many minutes to see the bottom 20 cars. This greatly discriminates from those who are under-funded, new to the sport or recuperating from a pit stop, either planned or for repair of crash damage. The guys on the bottom 20 list need to sell their program to potential sponsors but when they are never seen they can't sell a product nobody sees! I regularly root for some of the back markers as much as for my favorite contender. Please give the 'little guy' as much needed air time and exposure as the top 20 get. Just be fair!

I've always preferred the Fox coverage to whoever else had the 2nd half of the season but agree it needs a major tuneup. I still like it better than NBC because they don't cover the playoff so they don't have any incentive to talk about it every 5 seconds.

Fox started off really well in the beginning. They brought on some great talent in Mike Joy, Larry McReynolds, Matt Yocum, Jeff Hammond, Krista Voda, as well as Dick Berggren. They were at the top of their game. But then for some reason they decided to go in the complete opposite direction and bring on Michael Waltrip which was a disaster from the start. Add to that some people retiring from Fox and NBC being amazing, you could really see the cracks starting to show. Their coverage now is just god awful.

It definitely feels like they’re in the same vein of bad. I can partially forgive ESPN as they seemed to be starting from scratch considering all they wanted was a piece of this growing pie and then finding out that promise was never really going to come through. Point is, it is rough to watch nascar even with nothing but commercials but my heart still soars thinking about hearing Darrel, Larry, and Mike calling races. I somehow felt connected as if they were in my house to call the race. Whereas NBC, I feel like I have to put on a suit on just to watch it and as if I’ve gone out to the theater

I think the biggest issue with their broadcast is it feels like the director doesn't understand what fans want to see. There are too many zoom shots and bumper cams that don't provide a clear enough picture of all the action on track. I'm not against in car and bumper cams, but they need to serve a purpose. Would love more split screen layouts where you still see the race, but also see the up close action and intensity. I shouldn't feel like I need to ask a rear diffuser for consent every couple laps because that's literally all I can see on my 65" TV....

While the side of the company that does the broadcasts is still there it essentially has gone through a corporate reorganization with new corporate leadership, new priorities, and new direction. Also how much did FOX cut during the pandemic and how much of it if any has been restored. There is a lot of bigger questions that need to be answered which will also tell the long term direction of the broadcast and whether FOX will be involved.

@@robertlynn4435 as much I am with you in terms of bringing CBS back to NASCAR, it is unlikely to happen because CBS is so busy with the NFL, College Football & Basketball & the PGA Tour their primary sports. The PGA Tour in particular takes so much availability away for CBS to show races from February-June and putting races on CBSSN would not work because it is not considered a basic cable channel by many providers, meaning people have to pay extra to access it. What will likely happen in 2025 is either NBC gets the rights to air all of the NASCAR season or they split it with Turner (TNT/TBS) who want NASCAR back. FOX is likely out because they want to focus more on the NFL, College Football & MLB. As for ESPN, they aren't interested in NASCAR and are primarily focused on F1 when it comes to motorsports, although their contract ends at the end of the 2023 season.

Also, FOX will let a race go over its TV window on Network TV meanwhile NBC will always boot NASCAR to cable when it interferes with its nightly news. Even with just two commentators it felt so much refreshing and captivated, they were talking about the racers and how each driver in contention was doing and what they could achieve and the status of each team, even commercials were not much of an issue as the are sporadic and not intrusive, unlike the official broadcast in Fox sports (US) with commercials left and right. The first thing Fox needs to fix is their camera directing. The booth is a little better now that they're including Larry Mac in the conversations more, but none of that will matter if we can't see what's going on. A last lap pass for the transfer spot in a Duel shouldn't be an "oh by the way" replay after the fact, especially with the charter system where there's only going to be 1-2 eliminations across both Duels. Same with Harrison Burton's flip, you can't predict if a wreck will happen or not while showing an onboard cam but it shouldn't take until the replays after commercial to show the Turn 3-down the backstretch cam that's the best wide shot on the track.

  • @danielfoster3642
    @danielfoster36422 жыл бұрын

I don't think the on air talent is the problem. It's a combination of the graphics, commercial run time, and the decline in NASCAR's popularity that occured during the Brian France era. Shutting down the Speed channel also was a huge factor. Me and my family loved Dave Despain's Sunday night talk show WindTunnel. If Fox Sports 1 decided to keep the show going, it probably wouldn't have been a problem. But the show ended up getting cancelled, so it's a huge stinker to Fox. It also didn't help with the passing of Steve Byrnes and the phasing out of talent like Jimmy Spencer and Kenny Wallace. NASCAR Race Hub used to be great when Steve Byrnes and Jimmy Spencer were on. Since Steve's death, the show has gone downhill. This also affected the pre-race show as well. It used to be a show where Chris Myers, Jeff Hammond, and Darrell Waltrip would just sit at the Hollywood Hotel studios and just talk about NASCAR racing and the situations involving the race. Since the introduction of a CGI gopher, the show has gotten crazy. A couple corrections though. Hammond wasn't phased out, he was simply moved to different roles, though he still gets his analytical thoughts on when he gets the chance. Michael Waltrip didn't replace Jeff Hammond, he essentially took over his older brother's analytical role as DW focused on the Fox booth. That being said, I don't think he fits in any role more perfectly than being a funny analyst, although him taking the broadcast booth at Gateway over Kenny Wallace certainly is not what I had in mind. I also have to disagree with your opinions on DW, Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer as broadcasters. Sure, they can be goofy at times, but they also showed a lot of charisma and trust to the broadcast. We all enjoyed DW's words as the green flag waved to start the race. The reason DW retired was for him to spend more time with his family. This was clearly evident when he returned to call the Bristol Dirt race this year, it was nice to see him back in the booth again. Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer brought in something that was missing when Larry Mac took on a smaller role. When they worked together last year, say what you want about the goofiness, but all their teaser spots were funny to watch. Also, Mike Joy still carries the broadcast despite him getting closer to the end of his career. Adam Alexander is an up and coming announcer who is doing the Xfinity Series in a way to prep up for a future time that he replaces Mike Joy as Cup announcer. Whether it's for Fox or another network will depend on the next TV contract. So, I don't think Fox is going down as much as a lot of people would like to say it is. But you can clearly tell something is wrong, as they used to be the great powerhouse NASCAR coverage. I'd say that has disappeared since around 2015.

Were it not for Mike Joy, Fox's coverage would be almost unwatchable. I mean, I actually miss Jeff Gordon in the booth! But for me, DW was the best. He brought the ensemble crew to the top. People kind of bashed and hated on DW for the last few years for the little mistakes he would make. Now let's be honest he left a huge role behind when he stepped out of the booth and that's the beginning of when they really started to fall faster then they already are.

As a follower of the sport for 40 years I agree with many of the points you've made. Many of my opinions about Fox sports coverage lingers on the fact that I am not a fan of DW or his goofy brother. I would much rather have Hammond back in the coverage every weekend. I always look forward to the second half of the season when NBC takes over. Having said that I've always enjoyed Joy and McReynolds. Jeff Gordon is one of the greatest drivers of all time although I wasn't as impressed with him in the Booth. As far as the coverage itself I have to agree that Fox needs to improve in certain areas of their coverage. Just like everyone else I am frustrated with the amount of commercials but until we move to a different format I believe it will not ever change. I grew up listening to the sport on MRN radio. They still have some of the best announcers the sport has the offer. As far as I'm concerned Barney Hall and Eli Gold are the gold standard when it comes to broadcasting. I was always a huge fan of Benny Parsons and this might be an unpopular opinion but I never really cared for Ned Jarrett on the television. Although he did a tremendous job on radio. Radio is a different animal from television when it comes to broadcasting but I believe many of the TV broadcasters could learn a lot from radio broadcasters. I believe fox could benefit tremendously if they brought Larry Mac back into the Booth. I did enjoy Stewart on Sunday but I agree the lack of consistency will continue to be a crutch. I don't get to been out of shape over the coverage, I'm more concerned with the product on the track than how it is covered.

What killed it for viewers is one rule no one with NASCAR can make statements detrimental to the sport NASCAR must let all associates speak freely without retaliation

I think FOX started off very very hot alongside NBC in their original 2001-2006 stint While NBC has learned from their mistakes[hell I've seen more side by side commercials on there than on FOX] FOX just seems bent on having odd camera work, weird commercial breaks, and not really covering a good chunk of stories across the field like they used too. My main gripe with NBC is Rick Allen, but that's cause I think he works better as a commentator for either Xfinity or Trucks than he does cup, and them also missing stuff due to wonky camera work, but that said they try to find angles of incidents if they didn't catch it with a main camera. So I'm hoping FOX gets better as the year goes on, and for the rest of their stint. If it comes to it being a weird TBS/NBC split or even just NBC for post 2024 I wouldn't be too surprised.

I was happy when Tom Rinaldi came to Fox Sports. But for some reason this past Sunday, they had his segment about Truex and Sherry Pollex about 15 minutes before the command. Some of Fox’s production decisions just don’t make sense.

That goes up there with NBC mentioning Chase Briscoe and his wife having a miscarriage. It’s pretty low if you ask me.
