The GOOD and BAD of NASCAR on FOX In 2022

Спорт

The portion of the NASCAR season covered by FOX Sports has come to an end, meaning that we now have a full picture of how good (and bad) their NASCAR coverage has been in 2022. Today I want to look back at these pros and cons and see where they are strong and also where FOX Sports can improve when their coverage returns in 2023. These are the good and the bad on NASCAR on FOX in 2022.

@@andrewwilson1811 But that's the thing. We aren't in the 90s anymore. There is more entertainment being pumped out everywhere than there has ever been. People's attention spans are growing shorter thanks to the internet and new technology in general. F1 is popping off in the US especially with younger generations not just because of Netflix, but also because they air ZERO commercials during the entire race.

@@elijahjp2158 No way is F1 popping off in the US. Most people think it's boring as hell because there's hardly any overtaking. Hell, at Monaco, the guy who got pole position won the race 12 out of the last 17 races and was never overtaken at any point. Just watch qualifying to know the winner. What fun is that? It's basically a fast car show and not racing. Most people in America would rather watch a real competitive race. And on top of that, F1 cars keep getting bigger and bigger over the years, making it even harder to pass. LOL

I couldn't care less what the fans are doing during the race, I tuned in to watch the exact same race that they're attending! I may not like how NASCAR on FOX is nowadays and I may not like the modern NASCAR on NBC reboot, but there’s still some originality NASCAR on FOX they have like Mike Joy, Larry McReynolds, Chris Myers, Crank It Up (I wish it was better again), the return of in-person pre-race shows. My favorite guest stars are Chad Knaus, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Jamie McMurray, Larry McReynolds, and the throwback stars at Darlington! It’s annoying that the endless amount of more-full ads are still a thing from FOX and NBC. It’s annoying that FOX shows unnecessary angles and also show kids…. Like, that’s weird and creepy as hell. I feel like it’s time for a new NASCAR on FOX coverage director who can do a better job. That’s just me

My biggest issue was the amount of ad breaks we had and their timing. It seems like that once the green flag drops, we get 5 minutes of racing and 3 minutes of commercials, which for most tracks doesn't even get you into the double digits when it comes to lap count. I'm fine with ads being played during a race, after all it's pretty much been that way since I started watching NASCAR back in the early 2000s, but back then, you could easily get a good 12-15 minutes in before an ad break during green flag racing, and the only time you'd have multiple breaks in a short amount of time was during a caution period. Not to mention that if a wreck occurred during an ad break, it would cut back to the race almost immediately, or even delay the ad break if it occurred as they were transitioning to the break. And don't get me started on how it seems like you only see the same 5 commercials every ad break with the very rare exception.

A bad that I think you missed that need to be addressed is the Truck broadcasts. They gotta get Vince Welch out of there. He's just not good at being the lead broadcaster. And Michael Waltrip adds zero value in the booth. He only states the obvious or openly wishes for crashes. Fox needs to blow that booth up and redo it for next year. It makes watching Truck races insufferable at times. Unfortunately, since Fox only airs Trucks, they have no competitive incentive with NBC to be better. I wish it was possible for NBC to do a Truck race once, so we can hear Rick Allen return to his roots and call a Truck race one more time

I think Fox improved throughout the year- I can't disagree on that. I liked having some of the guest analysts, like Knaus and JMac, but not Danica or Tony (felt too monotonous) as much. I'll be looking forward to possibly Kurt Busch, Joey Logano, some of those drivers that have a great voice on the mic and smart mind on the race stories. One thing to note that most people don't know (and I only know from working in the broadcasting industry): the crew that broadcasts the races is NASCAR Productions, so it's the same people making the races the entire season. The only difference from Fox to NBC is the higher up producers that call the ultimate shots in terms of stories to cover and occasionally the shots to get; that's normally on the technical producers to get the right shots during the commentary, but the difference that we THINK we see between the networks is actually not there aside from a couple people that work for each company and have the logo in the corner of the screen. Hope that is something people learned today!

I would also like to add -and this is a very specific thing to pick on-, that group qualifying, mainly at road courses, had awful coverage. They would basically show someone notable start a hotlap, show video of the area surrounding the track and footage on pit road, etc., then show them ending their hotlap. I noticed how awful nascar on fox road course qualifying coverage is this past saturday, after watching F1 qualifying then watching the truck qualifying later that day. They could REALLY use some improvement in that specific niche.

Excellent observation! I watched COTA qualifying out of hopes it would exemplify the best excitement about F1 qualifying, but the broadcast was a confused embarrassment. I hope NASCAR can help out its broadcast partners at the road courses, whether it be having more qualifying-only sets of tires (which would increase the chances of someone improving subsequent lap times, i.e. drama) and set up something equivalent to sector times, which would help the broadcast booth tremendously.

I enjoyed the rotating booth this year and especially liked the Mike, Tony, Larry booth this past weekend. They had smooth chemistry and great insight with just the right amount of humor from Tony on the occasion. Nothing was overdone. It was fun near perfect. If they could learn from NBC on how to work camera angles and continue that outdoor prerace show from the mentioned Bristol and Talladega races and get there promotional material out more. NASCAR fans would be much happier. Now to even the playing field a bit I'll mention my thoughts on NBC. They have the opposite problem Fox has. I CAN NOT STAND their booth, I know some people enjoy the Jr, Steve, and Rick show but they're like nails on a chalkboard to me. And don't even get me started on the "Where's Rutt" segments. As a fan of the later ESPN booth, I'd love to see NBC bring in someone like an Allen Bestwick and Dale Jarrett for the booth, and maybe a Bobby Labonte (realistically it does seem unlikely).

Here's my take: I agree on the booth. Mike, Larry, and Jamie would be perfect. You honestly don't even need a full time third, just keep Mike and Jamie, and have Larry on speed dial for analytics like they do now. IF Mike wants to move on, bring up Adam Alexander, and it'll still be fine. Mike Joy is the Al Michaels of NASCAR. I think we can all agree when I say I love Clint's personality and sense of humor, but it was too much. He ranted and seemed to try to force comedy way too much during the broadcast. I'd be fine putting him on the Raceday show where the whole point is to have fun and entertain, he'd be a natural fit. My only other big gripe is the commercials. Not the timing, not the amount, but more specifically the last commercial every time is a NASCAR commercial. Like... I'm sitting here watching the race and you're giving me a generic NASCAR ad every 10 minutes? Either don't run that commercial which would mean a slightly shorter break, or find something else to fill that slot so you actually make money from it.

Here’s my own personal grade for each part of Fox’s broadcast Overall grade: C- Much was left to be desired but there is a lot of room for potential improvement. Commentating: B+ Much better compared to last years Broadcast. Although I was annoyed by Bowyer last year, I think he actually improved much more from last year, I’d give him a C+. I don’t need to explain why, but Mike Joy gets an A+. The rotation in the booth I thought was interesting and something newer, which I’d give it a B since we had some bad and some good commentators Race coverage: D- With how many commercials there were at some points I had to go and listen to MRN/PRN to listen to the races. Coverage was also really bad when it came to covering on track battles and incidents Pre-Race and Post Race: C- Pre-race skits need to go, it’s simple as that, have them for something such as NASCAR Race Hub. Too much goofiness before the race. The Grid Walk also needs to be worked. Fox did show some potential with what they did at Pocono, Talladega, Bristol with in person pre-race Post race needs to be redone entirely. Get rid of start/finish line interviews and go back to victory lane interviews. There is potential to revise what they do with post race coverage. For example, use the Fox Drone when a driver is celebrating a win, there’s so much potential there for it. After the driver is finished celebrating, have a commercial break until a driver arrives at victory lane and then interview them there.

I think the Victory Lane interviews are gone and not coming back. Too many sponsors and money not getting the coverage/ not network sponsors getting showcased. Example would be Gatorade Victory Lane and driver is a Coke driver who means Powerade is being drank. Who does the network/ NASCAR want being seen, corporate sponsor or driver sponsor? Thanks for pointing out how much the cameras would jump from cars battling in back to the top 5 cars. It was driving me crazy. There was one race where I could tell that Bowyer was disappointed when the cameras changed from a 10th place or so battle back to the leader running by himself. Also, TV NEEDS TO STOP going to commercial when someone catches the leader. This has been going on for decades and it NEEDS TO STOP NOW!!!!!

Honestly, i miss the victory lane celebrations and interviews. It gave the time to interview the other drivers in the field and the driver isn't forced to have a typically awkward interview when he wants to just celebrate his win with his team. And I miss hearing from the other drivers on what they thought about the race as opposed to just the winner and second place.

My biggest frustration with FOX's broadcast is you can see where the post-COVID production cuts still haven't been restored, both in the race broadcast (as you mentioned in the video) and especially on pit road, where Jamie Little (one of the best pit road/sideline reporters in any sport) and Regan Smith are scrambling having to cover 36 teams among the two of them. And I don't understand why announcers/reporters from the on-site lower series from previous days (i.e. Vince Welch, Josh Sims, Jamie Howe) cannot assist rotating as a third reporter, given they are already on-site during the weekend. FOX has had so much delay reporting critical information from pit roads and then lack of follow-up on key moments in post-race interviews because of the lack of support for Little and Smith that never happened when it had a four reporters in the era of Yocum/Byrnes/Berggren/Zelasko. Should also note that FOX has been rough about having so much dead time during pace/caution laps before green flag restarts, sometimes showing more of this than subsequent green flag laps before commercial (definitely set commercial slots instead of using them when opportunity allowed). However, this could be more of a NASCAR race control issue with how slow cleanups and scoring has been getting the field back under green quickly in recent seasons. Lastly, in the minority of this one it appears, but I enjoy Bowyer quite a bit. Recognize he isn't for everyone, but I enjoy his light-hearted perspective. If the third analyst rotation continues (I think it should, to a lesser extent), would love to see Larry Mac back in the rotation more frequently (he was extremely good, as always, at Sonoma last weekend).

I liked the idea of adding new voices throughout the year. Also I’m not sure how I feel about Bowyer. I find him a little annoying and it was nice for Jamie Mac to put him in his place a few times. Also I feel like they don’t take the broadcast as seriously as it should be. The drivers should be shown as top athletes performing at the top level of racing. So less jokes more serious conversation.

A good point I had in mind was the reminders that this was a new car during most, if not all of the broadcasts. With the rise of the new fans this year, I feel it could have helped the new crowd, and old, learn something about the sport. A bad point was the camera work, more specifically focusing on random fans (mostly kids) and unnecessary zoom-ins. I’m tuned in to watch the race, not John in the crowd with a #24 tee on or his daughters wearing their HMS merch. And the zooming in for no reason really blurred the focus of the rest of the race. Kinda nitpicking but that’s where I stand.

What Fox should do is cut the commercial breaks, that’s really what the stage breaks are for, as well as then put them durring caution me when possible. If you have to go to commercial during green flag action, go side by side. And a personal gripe, watching The cup race at gateway and the indycar race at Detroit simultaneously Fox and NBC went to commercial at the same time almost every time and if that can be avoided when both series air at the same time then do it. There are plenty of fans who watch both. Fox also should consider more night races. They don’t really have anything to compete with apart from the NBA payoffs but those happen in the middle of the week anyway so do more with that prime time TV slot. Get Tony Stewart in the booth full time, or at least most of the time. He was great. Him, Larry Mac, Jamie Mcmurry, and Mike joy are all awesome. Don’t put all 4 in the booth but mix and match them. I’d personally like to see a radio style broadcast for Cota and Sonoma, like NBC does for the Glen and Indy. It’s a unique approach that works. Doesn’t need to be all the time, but on occasion. Lastly, get more races on the big Fox. If Indycar and Nascar on NBC can pull off almost every race on the big network, then so can Fox. And don’t put the clash and all-star races on FS1, these are the big shows and entertainment products you should want to pit in front of of a big crowd at home.

I pretty much agree with everything you said except about Clint Bowyer and the skits during the prerace show. I think Clint Bowyer has gotten better as a broadcaster than last year, and he has the softness that could flow you into the broadcast. Sure, he can get a bit goofy at times, but that's Clint Bowyer for ya. When Bowyer started in the broadcast booth, I didn't think he was a good fit, especially if you put him with one of his earlier rivals in Jeff Gordon. Sure, they've softened up and were able to wing it out and remember the good times, but that still didn't get over the fact that they were constantly going back and forth over different things at times last year. But Jeff Gordon leaving the Fox booth actually benefitted Bowyer, as he was able to just be himself and at least be smart during the broadcast. As for the prerace skits, leave them be! There are always those times during the prerace show where there is nothing to add to the analysis, and you need to add some wiggle room. There are some skits that go too far, but the majority of them have been funny, and will be destined to become classic NASCAR moments. People don't realize this, but NASCAR moments don't always happen with the on track performance. They can carry over to the NASCAR broadcasts, and even on some NASCAR shows like NASCAR Now on ESPN, Trackside, NASCAR Race Day, NASCAR Victory Lane, NASCAR Race Hub, NASCAR America and the pre and postrace shows. Overall, I think Fox had an average season this year. There are things that can be improved on in 2023, but it was better than the 2021 season and ESPECIALLY the 2020 season.

Now they did have 3 for the daytona 500, Talladega, and the Coca-Cola 600, but that's it. I think there needs to be at least 3 full time pit reporters for the cup series. 2 is fine for the exfinity and truck series. I know that fox let some pit reporters go after the pandimic hit. also, I would agree wit you on Clint Bowyer he is not one I would have in the booth.

The only things fox got right this year in my opinion were Mike joy (can’t beat the classics), the rotating seat, and the pre race shows like the old nascar race day where the booth was outside with the fans. The bad was the commercials every 3-5 minutes, lack of awareness when they cut to break, changing camera angles when there is a good battle on the track (Hamlin vs chastain at gateway is my best example), the skits, and missing action altogether because of some bad camera angles (Ryan Blaney throwing his HANS device at the clash with no camera footage). I think this was one of the worst seasons of production for fox and it almost felt deliberate at times.

I think if FOX makes some changes, they could easily match or even surpass NBC’s (mostly USA Network) coverage. FOX has more races on network TV and often gets better ratings except during or after strings of races on FS1. Also, FOX’s NASCAR coverage is a big priority for the network while NBC’s NASCAR coverage seems to be a low priority (even lower than other sports on NBC) and easily gets booted to cable for almost anything.

I believe that Nascar needs to produce their own races. Get the best people that know Nascar. They can find the best camera angles and places to mics for the race sounds. They will then be able to get the best on air talent as well. NASCAR then just sends the stream to whoever wants to have the rights to the races. Since those companies don't have to produce it. They will then be able to pay a higher fee for the rights. That will then give more money to the teams.

FOX felt too lackadaisical at times this year. The camera angles were atrocious and I don't understand FOX's obsession with showing kids taking in the race, I understand the need to try to get kids to come out to the race but here is where lies the problem with what the broadcasts try to do, they try to pander and make it point to show fans and don't show enough of the race going on to even make it worth something and there were times where I was like "what is that cameraman doing?!" Furthermore, Clint Bowyer fell short of what expected him to be, he looked he was playing a character and not being himself. He made Jeff Gordon look good by comparison.

To me, I eel like they need to see about doing something about the number of ad breaks and taking the sport seriously. Okay yes going back 10-20 years, you had moments of levity, you had AB and Eli Gold and company being entertaining on air, but that was part of the broadcast, reacting to what had happened (see Parker Johnstone over in CART in the late 90s for how to throw zingers in and make it work), or Eli Gold/Buddy Baker in the booth for TNN and their chemistry. There's nothing wrong with being funny in the booth, as long as it's because of something happening on track. Eli Gold had a good one at TNN's coverage at NH one year, I think it was the 99 or 2000 race where they picked up a shot of Bill Elliott doing a burnout, Eli mentioned TNN covered drag racing then pointed out, in his serious, announcer tone that no, burnouts are not a part of Winston Cup racing, but Bill just got done with his one. I feel like whoever has the TV contract needs to let the sport dictate the camera shots, and talking about what's going on. THe Imsa/Radio Le Mans crew get away with talking about anything because 1. It's a 24 hour or 12 hour race or them, and 2, as the great John Hindhauh points out, on radio you aren't tied to what the camera is showing

Fans in 2020: Clint is funny in the Xfinity Series broadcasts, he should be a fulltime commentator when he retires! Fans in 2022: We've had enough of Clint, I don't like his 1-liners during the races & trying to be overexciting! Again, comparing NASCAR fans to the wrestling fanbase (especially when people leave WWE to go elsewhere), nobody is ever satisfied. They are good one minute, then the next they hate what they previously loved. Guarantee, if they had Mike, Larry, & Jamie Mac in the booth, SOMEONE would complain about it 5 weeks in, saying it was 'stale' & 'needed excitement'. The guest 3rd man spot was always fun, except for Danica, we won't go there. Hopefully, they can bring it back next year every other race or so.
