Here’s my personal hot take: NASCAR did the right thing by (allegedly) inventing a scoring error when Wendell Scott won. Remember, this was the Deep South, in a “white man’s sport,” in 1963. I wouldn’t be surprised if the crowd were already preparing the noose for the black man winning against the white men. It was for his protection.

@@siferraro Weird then why does your country seem to go into party mode whenever F1 rolls around? I've never seen a Brazilian Grand Prix that Interlagos wasn't packed to the brim with spectators. It's also not like other Brazilian F1 heroes aren't still alive. Brazil wouldn't even have a as big of presence in the world of Formula 1 without the likes of Emerson Fittipaldi or Nelson Piquet Sr. Seemed like Brazilians really loved Barrichello and Massa too. If anything I would of thought the Brazilian interest in F1 would have died out with Massa's retirement.

It'd be one thing if you're comparing two different series of the same racing category, like comparing NASCAR to other stock/touring car series like the BTCC or the Australian Supercars Championship. But comparing series in different racing categories is just stupid. It'd be like comparing the NFL to the Premier League just because they're both football leagues. That's technically true, but one of them is association football and the other is gridiron football. They're not comparable.

@@Christopher_TG I would argue that you can go further than that, but you’d need to specialize. You can’t compare the overall sports, but you can compare things like viewership and reach, and possibly, just maybe, how enjoyable the racing can be, or how easy it is to watch or understand. But you need to be specific and there need to be clear boundaries when making those comparisons.

For the "hating drivers because they win too often", here's a take from a German (former) F1 fan: Michael Schumacher, whilst winning races left, right and center during his stint with Ferrari made people hate him. When he came out of retirement for three seasons with Mercedes, people suddenly respected him. Same with Sebastian Vettel. During his time with Red Bull he was hated, during his run with Ferrari he was liked, and now, being with Aston Martin the man is absolutely adored! As a wise man from the world of professional wrestling likes to say: "people are fickle"

another horrible take is when people say “nascar is just left turn after left turn after left turn. it’s all just left turns” that take aged like sour milk, especially in the past 2-3 years, as nascar has added many road courses that include a lot of right turns. let’s see… there’s sonoma, watkins glen, the charlotte roval, indy roval, daytona road course, COTA, road america, mid-ohio, etc. so that annoying stereotype/take that people have about nascar and how it’s only left turns has turned into one of the worst takes ever.

For me it’s “Racing isn’t a sport” or “what’s so fun going around in circles?” The thing is they’ve either never watched a race or never had or wanted the chance to drive a race-car, so they don’t know much about the sport and they don’t know what it’s like to go racing for themselves, it bothers me but I have to ignore them and you should do the same.

7:44 I have to disagree. In every sport the dominant team/athlete is always hated. For example the Yankees are the most hated team in baseball, Tom Brady and the Pats were hated during their dynasty (Tom Brady is still hated by some), and the Warriors were absolutely hated during their title runs as well. I’m sure I’m leaving out more examples but you get the point

In motorsport in general, you don't often see people admitting to being fans of a dominant driver or team and when they do, they get dogpiled. Now, this probably does happen in a lot of sports. But I've never had an NFL fan get uppity and start ranting at me like a lunatic about me being a Patriots fan like they have for me being a Vettel fan. I've never been yelled at for being an Alabama fan like I have for being a Kyle Busch fan and so forth. I think the only exception to this has been Larson but that's mostly because my social circles are mostly dirt fans and anti-cancelculture and absolutely love what he's done the last two years with the opportunities he was given after CGR's kneejerk reaction to fire him. Now he's champion and that team doesn't exist anymore. But I digress. It just seems a lot more prevalent in motorsport that hatred of domination is the expectation and the rule where it doesn't really seem to be that much on public display in other sports.

I'd like to start off by saying that I do agree that fans just hate the dominant one and it's not really a personal thing, basically it's just another reason for anyone who's not a fan of them to be even louder. For example I was never a JJ fan, never hated him either, but I was happy for him to get his 7th and in his last season I was pulling for him and sad to see him not even make the playoffs. Looking back I have mad respect for what he did and will defend him whenever someone tries to bash him but during his run I definitely was one that was tired of seeing him win, even in the video games it would always be Johnson or Gordon leading. I didn't hate him personally, but I just wanted to hear about someone else. But I do have some slight rebuttals as a pivotal fan in all of your examples😂😭 First off, as a lifelong Yankees fan, they haven't really been close to dominant for YEARS. We've made a couple runs a couple times but we really haven't been dominant for over a decade. I don't think we even made the wildcard game a handful of years ago when we led the league in 1st inning runs. But at the end of the day I mean 26 championships so I can understand it lol. Today it would probably be the Astros, Dodgers, or Red Sox as those seem to be the big 3 that have been making deep playoffs runs every year for a while now. As a lifelong Colts fan, sure they were dominant but there's many more reasons nearly every team in the league has their own reason to hate the Pats and/or Tom. "Allegedly" bugging locker rooms, the head coach just happening to find out secret plays the day before or even the day of the game, recording other team's practices; and of course deflategate (yes I know we probably wouldn't have won that game anyway but cheating is cheating and it's just salt in the wound😭). Again, the Warriors were one where most fans did hate them just because of how dominant they were, but as a Lakers fan it sucked to see because at one point the NBA blocked a trade that would have Chris Paul on the Lakers. Apparently CP3 and Kobe on the same team was too op, but having Lebron, Wade, Ray Allen on the same team was fine, and then having Curry, Thompson, Durant, Cousins, all on the same team wasn't a problem either so again that was just an arms in the air wtf time to be alive. I'm not really trying to argue anything you said, all those teams or players are/were hated for being so dominant for so long, just venting about my own personal vendettas on each of those

​@@Lasukie I'm a Colts fan so I could probably change your claim about nobody ranting at you for being a Pats fan which is actually shocking as that seems to basically be the most hated team. Hope your weekend before Christmas was a good one ;P I don't follow F1 close enough to say anything about Vettel, to me he's always been a pretty great driver and not much conversation can be had about that. I will say the difference between KB and KL is that Larson is generally liked by everyone, at least not hated. I got to go to the championship race this year and in intros Larson got the loudest cheers, even louder than Chase. Busch obviously isn't a terrible driver, but he has done things in his past that have given plenty of people plenty of good reasons to hate him. Denny, Chase, Logano, they've all done things that give people a reason to hate them, but Larson hasn't really done anything crazy on the track that can make an entire group of one driver's or team's fans turn on him. I also think it helps with how much the NASCAR media shines a light on Larson's success in other forms of racing, it just helps build a general respect for and understanding of the great racer he is. Other driver's fans may not necessarily like him and cheer him on, but they respect his skill and he hasn't given them a reason to cheer against him. The worst you'll get for being a Larson fan now is being called a bandwagon, probably by salty Chase fans. I think the biggest thing about people being so loud against dominant teams is that it gives every other fan just one more reason to hate that driver/team. When the Patriots/Tom were winning everything, there were 31 fanbases that *hated* it, but only one that loved it. Given your social circles I'd say you're pretty familiar with the concept recently of the loudest people being the "correct ones" or the "good guys" while everyone else is just wrong and stupid even when there's evidence to back them up.

Can we keep making these kinds of community vids for the rest of the off-season?

Didn't Carl Edwards also get penalized for going under the Double Yellow at Daytona, while losing spots? That moment is honestly so iconic because the Broadcast was agreeing with Carl the entire time that he didn't deserve the penalty.

Bruton's Smith's take on Kentucky being the biggest NASCAR race was so bad that it even landed him the "Straight Jacket" award from Jimmy Spencer.

So you’d rather have the inconsistency then? I mean, you had races on CBS, ABC, TBS, ESPN, and TNN and there wasn’t much of a set schedule. Fox and NBC had the right idea, and that got backing when ESPN got back into the game. Why the hell did ESPN need to be the exclusive Busch home? Why did TNT need to stay in NASCAR when there wasn’t any real reason for them to do so?

@@chrisp679 Yes....... more tv partners means more interested parties which means more coverage to more eyeballs even when the NASCAR race is not on. Just look at the NFL...... Now I get that the NFL v NASCAR are different as you have all opponents on a single track at a single time as compared to spread out to multiple stadiums but the concept is the same..... networks that have a vested interest in the NFL or NASCAR will cross promote during other programming and mention the sport/build it up. Additionally when there is more partners, then the networks have to put on a high quality broadcast lest lose the contract to another network. If the single network contract was such a great strategy, then other sports would have done it too, but in the last 20 years all the major sports increased the number of tv partners, not decreased like NASCAR

The one I'm surprised wasn't mentioned was the reconfiguration of turns 1&2 at Texas motor speedway

One of the dumbest takes I’ve heard is the fact that nascar drivers aren’t athletes. NASCAR drivers and their crew members that go over the wall are absolutely athletes. Many crew members played college sports before transitioning to NASCAR. As for the drivers themselves, I explain to people that it isn’t just driving in circles. It’s racing in circles with 39 other drivers fighting for the same spot on the track while going 200MPH and inches away from another for 3+ hours. Drivers lose 5-10 lbs of water weight per race. Many drivers actively work out so they are not as winded at the end of the races.

There's also having to do with the fluids in your body being tugged to the right anywhere between 600-1000 times depending on the length along with whatever bodily damage comes from the wrecks. Not to mention I remember hearing about how Jimmie Johnson jogged 15 miles a day or something like that.

There is a level of fitness required but calling them athletes is big stretch.

The fact that Bruton Smith said that Kentucky was going to be as big as the Daytona 500 is just extremely laughable. The Daytona 500 is still the sports marquee event while kentucky got turned into a parking lot.

One of my favorites was after Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin got together in the 2010 All Star race Denny said in some interview that "someone at JGR had to be the leader of the organization and it sure as hell wasn't gonna be Kyle"

I must admit that when I first heard about NASCAR as a kid, being a hardcore F1 fan since 1996, I didn't take it seriously. I used to think, "they're just turning left all the time, where's the drivers skill in that?" However, as I've got older, I have grown to appreciate Motorsport in general and NASCAR is no different in that sense. When the season has come to a close I look at full videos of other racing series. In fact, it was the outbreak of Covid-19 that truly sparked my interest in NASCAR. My favourite race to watch back is the 1992 Hooters 500. That race, knowing the historical significance of it, makes me well up with the knowledge that Alan Kulwicki wouldn't be able defend his underdog championship win thanks to the plane crash he was involved in in April 1993, Davey Allison wouldn't get another chance to win a championship with his helicopter crash in July 1993 and despite his low key debut, Jeff Gordon would have an incredible career from then onwards. That being said, I'll tune in to rewatch the Carolina Dodge Dealers 400 and enjoy that incredible finish between Kurt Busch and Ricky Craven at some point :) "Have you ever?!"

Whatever Bruton was smoking when he said Kentucky would be bigger than Daytona,he needs to pass some my way.

Nascar fans claiming that more roadcourses were added so the 9 car can win them.. and that the schedule was made it for him to win them all.. But None of this was said when MTJ used to dominate them... nobody was complaining when the roval was added the year Truex was the defending champ... but when Chase comes in and Starts winning them Everyone starts losing their minds... not to mention the amount of times Chase got Swept by Larson The same fans go around clowning him on Social media but you never saw this when Truex lost a roadcourse.. Harvick beat him at sonoma you didn't heard Bob Screaming HEY hey guys. Is Kevin harvick the new roadcourse king???? Not even when he got dumped by Brad or got taken out by a Washed up Jimmie Johnson But Elliott loses 1 the dude Gets Clowned by everyone and His teammate is suddenly called the new roadcourse king no Direspect to Kyle. But still there's times that everytime the media Spills something or starts Sipping the tea like a bunch of Middle school girls people follow it.. It's what this one NBA KZreadr said.. the media is very powerful what the media says. People follow it

As for the “They only won because they had the best equipment”, it’s always like this: The best drivers get the best equipment, and that combination wins races and championships. You don’t see someone like Hamilton in F1 for Mercedes, or Dale Sr in the past, drive some sub-standard equipment just because. They’re racing drivers, but over all, competitors. They’re there to compete, and that means taking all you can to achieve the best results you can.

Yes, but doesn't mean Hamilton/Schumacher would have won 7 titles in equal cars either. They were both very lucky to be at teams with very long eras of dominance.

The Atlanta repave will turn it into a mini plate track will be a future terrible take as the reconfiguration will still have less banking, a narrower track width and sharper turns compared to Daytona and Talladega.

I totally agree with this. You don't need wrecks for good racing. This goes for all NASCAR races, not just the superspeedways.

10:23 as a someone who myself and family is closely involved with dirt racing, I'm not really surprised, most dirt racers live and die by "dirt's for racing, asphalt is for getting there"

8:06 Literally everyone who didn't blindly like Lewis Hamilton rooted for Max Verstappen to win the F1 world championship purely because he was the only one this year who could break Lewis' winning streak. This isn't unique to NASCAR.

While I'm not a Hamilton fan, I kinda wanted him to win it simply because no one has ever won 8 titles in a series that major (sorry Steve Kinser, World of Outlaws doesn't count), and with his age, and the new car next year, I doubt he'll ever have another chance. But I'm not unhappy about Verstappen winning.

This isn’t so much a bad take as much as it is a fear that always creeps into me. But I always get nervous about NASCAR’s future like when a big sponsor leaves (M&M’s, Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc.), a new car package gets introduced, number placement on car gets changed, etc. I want to see NASCAR continue long into the future for generations to come. And bc NASCAR isn’t as mainstream as NFL for example, I’m always worried that NASCAR will just fall into irrelevancy. Let me just say this: I know it’ll probably never happen. It could, but probably not. So if you want to throw this into the bad takes pile, I completely understand. But it’s always my fear for NASCAR to be gone. Forever.

Oh it'll definitely happen. The fascination with cars and driving is fading. So is the general concept of competition and risk based activity within society.

I kinda want to put my perspective on the RowdyMajor18 take, specifically the other sports part. I think that in ANY sport in particular, when a team wins so much that it's almost considered a dynasty level team, fans hate them. Look at the Patriots in the NFL when Tom Brady was with Bill Belichick. To my knowledge, they were the most hated team in the sport, I remember when they were trying to win the Super Bowl after going undefeated the whole season and not ONE person I knew was cheering for them. That's why when people like Jeff, Jimmie, and even throw in guys who can have strong seasons year after year, people can't stand it. The Cubs in MLB on the other hand? I remember so many people cheering for them, it makes a great story to hear they finally won the World Series again after over a century! That's why 9/10 times we love a first time winner, or a guy who goes 100+ races without a victory to show but success once again! I 100% agree with the win too much philosophy, because it's true! But it's in all sports, not just Nascar.

Worst take: Chase Elliott is a Mickey champion. Like bruh…

Jerry Nadeau in the Bill Elliott/Dan Marino #13 was supposed to be the ultimate road course driver yet was on the front row in 98 but wrecked his way up the hill on lap 1 and pretty much ruined his job. That one sticks out

One more thing about Juan Pablo Montoya, he won the Indianapolis 500 three years later. He’s no clown

When drivers, owners, media & fans say "the Chase format has been good for the sport..." That blows me away everytime I hear it.

Same thing with the Playoffs. I kinda would like to see some kind of formal structure for their Championship Series.

It's not a common one, but I've seen it from enough people to mention it. "If he hadn't got hurt Ernie Irvan would have won the 1994 title." Let's unpack this a bit. Hypothetically instead of getting hurt on Saturday in practice he's uninjured but then either his car breaks on the pace laps or he's caught up in the 1st lap big one in his backup car on Sunday, relegating him to a last place finish (as unlikely as that is it's the fairest way to do the comparison). He would have been 42 points behind Earnhardt with 10 races left. Ernie's hot start the season had already cooled well before that weekend at Michigan, in part due to some bad luck in races where he'd run well (most famously the late flat tire in the inaugural Brickyard 400 while battling for the lead). Look at Earnhardt's last 10 races that season though--he strung together 8 top 3 finishes and one of the other two finishes was a 7th (the other was a blown experimental motor at Phoenix after clinching the title). Ernie would have had to average a 4th place finish in those 10 races to beat Earnhardt. Even if Ernie had imitated his hot start where he won 3 of the first 10 races it wouldn't have been enough, as he averaged a 5.6 finish over those 10 races. Would Ernie have won the 1994 title? No. Would Ernie have kept it closer than Mark and Rusty did? Definitely.

The "too much winning leads to a driver being hated" is a universal thing in motorsports, Hamilton was more disliked by F1 fans then liked even before his toxic politics brought him down to not even being the most popular British pilot amongst Brits.

One very interesting thing when you look at fans now liking nascar and open wheel is the connection these sports have had recently. Obviously with Jimmie Johnson racing Indy car and going full time next year but also with guys like Dario Franchitti, Juan Pablo Montoya, Kimi Raikonen has helped a lot. All champions in their respective sports, who have made the switch.

Hot take but if Dale Jr won at least one championship the sport would be a lot more popular. I feel like growing up as a 2000s kid that the whole point of nascar was for Jr to win a championship for his Dad but then Jr stopped winning and ultimately never did win a championship, I feel like tracks would be sold out in 2021 if he won a championship.

Petty had the best equipment! Not Pearson. Had good equipment, and only ran part time schedules. To me that’s why he is the best ever. Wasn’t worried about championships and still won 3. 105 wins in 5xx starts. That’s unreal

When many fans were saying Hemric wouldn't win the title literally as the Phoenix finale was happening

I think Robby Gordon driving for 6 time cup champion Richard Childress goes mic and says about Jr" Then again I'm not the one with a team built around me" then again it's Robby Gordon.

My opinion on great drivers would be that Petty and Pearson and those of that era were actually tougher than the drivers now with power steering, cool boxes + ice packs and innovations to funnel wind into the cars. Also, technology in the era of Petty and Pearson was not as good. Shocks and springs weren't as researched so the ride was rougher, oftentimes tires weren't specifically formulated to grip at speeds making for an emotionally more harrowing experience, communications were done mostly via pitboards (under rudimentary radio) and materials for heatproof shoes, the firesuit and other aspects of a the driver's seat was different. They also ran with side windows, adding to the heat inside the car. All they had was water (that would heat up the driver's suit and icepacks). I would wager that no current NASCAR driver could manage the 500 mile races that these driver's put on, in the worst conditions, while still being able to climb, in most cases, out of the car. Now we have 300 mile wimpo shoes and calls to decrease race length plus all the artificial breaks (Stages) along with technological and mechanical exponential advances in technology! I mean if anything, with what they have and for a fan to really see a TEST of what sort of engineering is applied to a street car (since most parts aren't anymore) would be for longer races and fans that knew how to lay down their cellphones.

That Talladega will have a Night Race or NASCAR will have rain tyres for ovals like Daytona

The best drivers most of the time end up in the best equipment, that is just how it goes

When The Iceberg was talking about wearing a NASCAR hat to a dirt track it made me remember the time I wore an asphalt track’s sweatshirt to a dirt track.

The problem with Gordon was he was beating NASCARs most popular driver Dale Sr.!! Don't really think people hated Johnson, think it was mostly people getting bored with him winning so much, and again went up against TWO favorites Petty n Dale Sr with 7 cups

The only reason I hate a driver for winning too much is when it isn't my driver.....let's just say 2018 was the time to be a Kyle Busch fan....and I'm glad I was.....also I still laugh about MTJ's "Damn war" statement to this day....I remember being so mad that none of the big 3 won, but looking at it now, Joey had to battle hard with the best three drivers to get that championship.

When drivers dominate any sport, everybody hates them, but when they don't dominate and win anymore, everybody wants to see them do it again. For example when Jimmie Johnson was mediocre those last 3 years everyone wanted to see him win or now Sebastian Vettel is driving mediocre in F1, everyone wishes to see him win that 5th title

A certain KZreadr who will remain nameless said HMS shouldn't replace Jimmie and should downsize to three cars for '21. I like his work, generally, but that might be an all-time bad take considering how their season turned out.

@@jamesgentry13 No, actually! If you just search for "Hendrick should downsize, it's the first video that comes up." Estepp has one where he reports on the possibility, but the other video you'll find straight-up makes the argument that HMS should've removed the #48 team entirely.

F1 is the same in terms of driver hate when winning races, happened to Vettel at Red Bull, Rosberg when he was at Mercedes, LH for the last 7 or so years, simply cuz they took advantage of the kit

I just watched the 2007 Coke 600 and DW said oh yea Jeff Gordon he won his first career race in the Coke 600 went on to win the championship the very next year. Casey has the same feeling in my opinion.

The one I would say is that the Texas reconfiguration would create the best racing the track has ever seen. I remember Eddie Gossage pushing that there would be 3-4 wide racing into turn 1. Now it's the most hated track on the schedule.

Hating the best driver is something you can see in f1 with Hamilton, I thinks its not only nascar but Motorsport fans in general

It’s honestly the same way with any sport. For example most baseball fans hate the Yankees and for years most football fans hated Tom Brady and the Pats

Petty was a great driver, but he's not the GOAT. In addition to having top tier equipment, he ran every single race on the schedule which included a LOT of races with nobody drivers. It's the equivalent of Kyle Busch getting 200 Nascar wins with a lot of those wins in lower series. (And no, I'm not a Kyle fan).

When drivers “win too much” I don’t hate them. I’m no Larson fan but I respect his ability… it just gets boring after a while seeing the same guy up front for 300 laps for 1/3 of the season. If he’s a good driver plus the best equipment, it’s not that fun to watch. Petty was amazing, but can you imagine being a fan of literally anyone else when petty was in his glory days? It’d be a pain in the ass to watch.

Can you do a video about Rob Moroso? Its a “what could’ve been” story that ended in tragedy.

So here's a couple of my responses on these take, like anyone cares. So first off I think the reason people hate dominant winners like Jimmie is a) because he's not their favorite so it's just another reason to hate him, or b) it's not anything personal against the driver, it's just because they like variety. One of the arguments I have any time someone says F1 is more exciting, is that F1 only had I think 5 or 6 different winners from 4 teams, and those 2 teams that weren't Red Bull or Mercedes, only won once and they won weird races that were either rain shortened or Max and Lewis wrecked out, they didn't win because they were the best car/driver/crew altogether. If I remember right, Lewis and Max won like 15 out of 20 races in F1 this year, no variety! So I can see this same thought process applied in NASCAR, when you see Hendrick winning as many races as they did or Jimmie dominating 5 years in a row, if you're not a fan of the person or team dominating you start to roll your eyes and ask when the next man up will come take them down. As a JPM fan, I actually didn't know there were people still legitimately clowning Juan for hitting the jet dryer. Everything I see is a funny meme that I laugh at and if there's clueless people in the comments, I just assume they haven't seen what actually happened so I just ignore those comments and move on, which I think is an attitude the internet needs a lot more.

Just gotta say, Kyle Busch does not get hate for winning too much, he gets hate for acting like a jackass.

Honestly I love MTJ's line about him and Logano. It's just a shame it didn't work out. But the line itself, I love it.

People saying Dale Jr wasn’t very good. He was racing (and winning) in 15th place equipment back in the early 2000s while having to deal with a Karen for a step mom. He also lost his father on a day that would have been very happy otherwise. And all the pressure to be like his dad was thrown on his shoulders. That and multiple concussions greatly hindered his career.

With the take about comparing NASCAR to other sports and how younger fans have wider pallets now, I can confirm that. For a couple years, my first few years I was strictly NASCAR, but I now love IMSA and F1 and IndyCar, besides NASCAR those are my favorites.

People hated Gordon in the 90s not just because he won so much, but because he was a good-looking young California kid invading what was then a Southern working-class sport. There was a perception that he just had everything handed to him (which was totally untrue, he spent years working his way up the midget/sprint car ladder).
