What extreme shortsightedness (-11.0) looks like • Normal eyes vs myopia and astigmatism

For the record, Hypermyopia is a word I made up to describe my extreme myopia. This video showcases the intense blurriness I experience in my vision without glasses.
In addition to myopia, I also have high factor astigmatism that causes light to be fuzzy in my vision. Currently there is no direct cure or treatment to completely cure this issue. My only advice is to take care of your eyes.
Don't read books or watch screens in the dark. Eat loads of Vitamin A and Bilberry and Lutein to strengthened the eyes. And lastly, don't stare are screens excessively like I did. Hope you enjoy the video!

I'm -7.5 in both eyes and this is exactly what I see too without my glasses. I also suffer with really bad eye floaters, which is probably a result of my myopia. People with normal vision have no idea how lucky they are. It's frustrating to see them take it for granted.

This is basically what I see without glasses. What people don’t understand is that I can see shapes, but just not any detail what so ever. People always hold there fingers up and ask how many fingers am I holding up? I’ll always get it right. (Unless they aren’t next to me) and they will be like “your vision is fine”

I have a similar prescription, a tiny bit lower at -9.5 and -10.5. One thing I’d like to say is that you can still walk around if you’re familiar with your surroundings. As in, unlike the video, I could still walk down the stairs fairly quickly if I hold onto the handle. And don’t bump into things as you can still see it’s shape. Also, I can actually read on my phone, but ONLY at exact 3 inches from my face. Any further, it gets blurry and any closer, it gets too uncomfortable. Also I have to keep one eye closed as it’s too close and don’t want to read crosseyed.

Losing the ability to read tiny print held right up to my eyes is the one thing I regret about having cataract surgery (intra-ocular lenses!) But being able to open my eyes when I wake up and see the room in sharp detail or being able to drive wearing only OTC sunglasses makes up for it.

I am SHOCKED and so happy! I have almost exactly the same eye glass prescription as you! I have always wanted to show people how difficult it is for me to see. I can't wait to share this video! I'm actually just a tiny bit worse in one eye than you are. Firstly, I can't seem to get my eyes to stabilize, they continue to worsen since I was in my fourth year at school. My doctor put me in gas permeable (hard) contact lenses to trap my eye shape in the hopes it will stop changing, because otherwise they felt I would be completely blind before I turned 25, and it did slow the progression. I am not eligible for any type of corrective surgery. In the United States, vision care is NOT covered by insurance either, so I cannot easily afford much to help. I am incredibly interested in EVERYTHING you know about our common (rare) trait! Thank you so much!!! ~Danielle

I pretty much had the same prescription and issues like you (plus Nystagmas!). Did ICL 2.5 years ago and it is a game changer. Judging by the comments below I think you have had that now as well. For me it didn't completely fix my sight (i.e. still not 20/20 but it was never going to be able to correct it to that degree), but I don't have to wear glasses for distance. I hope it is working out well for you! One other comment, it's really good that you did this video, but maybe it is me, but for near objects and going down stairs etc it wasn't that bad for me, certainly that bad for distance, and reading was very similar for me as well.

I found that my vision has one small advantage, my vision at 8 cm is pretty awesome, and lets me have a macro-lenslike experience for free, it's great for viewing really small detail for the small insignificant penalty of not being able to see anything else clearly past about 9 cm. Today I wear a large pair of glasses for myopia and the best I can see now is my own two hands up close. My entire life people see my glasses (the insane thickness of my feather light lenses) and are curious about what the world looks like through my eyes! Thanks to science and the power of smart electronics, we finally have the ability to show people exactly what it's like. We try to explain it to people, but it's indescribable. How amazing it is to finally be able to share with others what the world looks like through our eyes without our corrective lenses. I was diagnosed in second grade, it has gradually declinined annually every since my initial diagnosis. I've been deemed legally blind ( -4 and everything lower ) since I was 12 years old.

I hate when I have my glasses on and like if they are in front of me I see them looking at the corners of my glasses. It's hard to explain but I know they are not looking me directly in my eyes. Subconsciously, I hope when they are looking at me my eyes don't look cocked or anything lol. But seriously I hate going to the eye doctor for my annuals. Everytime I get new glasses people be like "Can I see" like to see if it's really prescription or to see "how blind I am". I hate that when I have my glasses on my head looks smaller though the glasses and I hate that people actually say that. It's rude. I think ICL may be good since it can help with high myopia...but from what the doctor told me, the eye myopia may come back for me in the long run plus the cost is much much higher than LASIK. I recommend you get a second opinion to see which suits you the best!

Hey Nikirta, the most important thing is to make sure that your vision has stabilized prior to getting the procedure. I would suggest waiting a year to determine this factor. Ask your doctor those kinds of questions, I’m sure they would be more than happy to assist you. Good luck and I hope it all works well for you!

I undertsand your pain, although my vision is like ten times worse than yours. I have extreme myopia of -23 diopters with astigmatism, so I am like mostly blind without my thick glasses.

@@jinjin7135 i can't because my prescription is too high for contacts or surgery. Even with my thick, heavy glasses, i only have 70% vision
