Myopia vs Astigmatism vision (POV)

Today we compare the difference between myopia (near-sightedness) and astigmatism.
Myopia vs Astigmatism
Astigmatism vs Myopia
Myopia is also known as short-sightedness or near-sightedness.
I have used with the rule astigmatism in each of the examples to keep it simple.

I have both pretty bad myopia and astigmatism and driving at night is the absolute worst because all the lights are way brighter and seem stretched out, especially if I'm driving in a rural area with little light. Makes it much harder to anything else. Same for driving in heavy rain. Also, growing up I thought the whole Velma not being able to find her glasses was just a humor thing. No. It's real. If my glasses aren't exactly where i usually keep them, I can't find em 😅🥲

To find my glasses when I misplace them (or when someone moves them, as I fall asleep easily and I put them on the couch) I use the camera of my phone. The screen leaves a flat image -unlike mirrors, that mantain depth, so I'm able to see around me.

I was diagnosed with myopic astigmatism when I was 23. I noticed that I couldn’t read the aisle signs in Walmart when my girlfriend at the time had absolutely no issues doing so. Then, while driving, I would ask her to read road signs I wasn’t close enough to read yet. She could read them easily. When I got my glasses, I wanted to cry. I had never seen how beautiful the world could be. I no longer sit 3 feet away from the tv too!

Love your videos Dr. Hong! Now more people will understand the differences of Myopia and Astigmatism! 💖 As an optometrist in my country, I always try to explain these things to my patients. There is a common misconception that without glasses, myopic/astigmatic people are blind. I always point out the differences to them. I say that most of the time the edges of letters or numbers are blurred, and the form & color of objects are what remains to be seen for people with errors of refraction. Blind people on the other hand would have a hard time seeing the forms of objects/letters/numbers, plus their eyesight wouldn't be improved with glasses anymore, it would just be a visual aid for them, but typically 20/20 letters are quite impossible.

Hey yo Antonio! Thank you for your content! One idea is that you could do a video overlaying both issues, as many people have both myopia and astigmatism. It would be cool to show people the combined effect. You could also look at how the combination of different eye issues affects the end result, such as oblique astigmatism in one eye together with with the rule or against the rule in the other (perhaps plus myopia).

My astigmatism looks different, It's not simple x/y axis and there are also multiple copies of the image. It's like when you copy a layer 3-10 times on photoshop, displace them a bit and put some 10-25% transparency on it and the different astigmatism angle on each. Also, in the street light example, looking at one/original copy, the streak of light is not only like half of the radius, but at least half the length of the pole but also at reduced transparency!

I agree with you on the astigmatism part. But the "representation" of myopia is inaccurate. It is correct for mechanical lens but not human eyes. Lemme explain. I have -2 dioptri from childhood to -14 now so i can tell you my experience The reason for this, is that your brain will "correct" blurriness the more you have dioptri. So big image like cars wont get mashed up like this video, but small words does kinda accurate. For example, the car is still "somewhat" clear but the edge is blurry. You can still see the shape of the car, but not the details. In my experience this is due to the brain try to correct things up Also, based on mechanical lens, if you have 14 dioptri you should not be able to do anything. Yet i, can do everyday task, like grabbing things, drinking, sitting. Because i can still see "things". Yet i can only see these letter on my smartphone when its 4 cm from my eyes. Hope this helps

Sometimes I am conciously aware that my one eye is starting to go again and everything is very blurry, lasts a day or two. My glasses work well sometimes, but then my eye begins to blur pretty intensely and my same glasses no longer correct it enough.

I hope you don't mind if I answer. Orthokeratology molds the superior layer of the cornea with a special, rigid lens (which is very comfortable) to be worn during the nighttime. The effect is completely reversible by just not using the lenses, and the duration of the eye correction is usually enough for one day (a bit more if the lenses are worn a lot and/or the refractive error is low). The best effect is at morning; in the evening, if very late or if the lenses have been removed very early there may be a little blur. No glasses needed, the effect is kept on by wearing the lenses. The great limits are the obligation to wear the lenses (because if you have a -2.50 and skip one night the eye correction may be -1.00 and the vision will be blurry both with and without the glasses), and the range of the correction possible. Modern designs have a range from -6.00 to +3.00 with a max of 2 or 3 D of astigmatism. It's obviously required a medical ok to start the treatment and followup visits are indeed very necessary.

Sometimes ophtalmologists ignore astigmatism less than 0.50. It's common for people to not see a big difference and if a person's rx has been all spheric in school they teach you to try to stick to it. I am a personal fan of well correcting this kind of cylinder (if tolerated), especially in young people who may struggle at school or have a complaint on blurry vision even with glasses. I am one of the people that without a -0.50 cyl have a discomfort. I get headaches, eyestrain and an annoying blurry sensation, even if my myopia (about -4.50 OU) is well compensated.

Idk if you have already gotten an answer, but yes - the different wavelengths of red, green and blue light are directed differently by the lens. So for example if light of all three colors enters the eye from roughly the same spot, they don't arrive at the same point on the retina. This is why it's so unpleasant to read, for example, red writing on a green background. However, I have no idea if there's a causal relation between astigmatism and your seeing blue light differently.

I have astigmatism and am nearsighted. No optometrist told me when I was younger that being nearsighted can mean that you're at greater risk for retinal detachment due to the shape of the eyeball. At 22, I had a buckle put on one eye for detachment and had cryopexy done on the other. Due to the buckle, when light hits my eye a certain way, I can see the inside of my eye.

I saw my regular optometrist due to floaters, flashes of light and a blind spot. She told me nothing, just got on the phone with another doctor and I heard, "...I think a patient has retinal detachment." Ophthalmologist #1 really didn't explain much but referred me to ophthalmologist #2 who did the buckle surgery. #1 just said, "Don't eat anything passed midnight. You'll probably have surgery tomorrow." At that point, it was horrifying, since no one had really explained anything. When I saw #2, I learned that I had detachment in one eye and tears in the other. The buckle surgery was very painful. (I was actually awake for the surgery.) I've been really vigilant since then, watching for any new weirdness. And I make it a point to keep any eye doctor appointments. I still have the original bind spot, flashes of light, "glasses noodle" floaters, and things, but I've been good since then. I can see pretty well--I've had several eye doctors tell me I'm pretty lucky to be able to see as well as I can.

I have strong astigmatism and myopia. Floaters are now casual for me. But recently, i experienced some little flash of lights (not big), for about 30 seconds last month, when I was going to the ski (no sun in the eye), but no eye pain or blind spot. Floaters don't seem to have increase. I still can drive day and night (i'm used to it anyways with my job of truck driver, and avoid the blindness of the lights easily). But your comment got me rethink all of that. I've done my glasses three years ago. I will replace them in one month. Let's see what happen. Hope i don't have retinal detachment. Did your flash of lights was happening often?

No longer allowed to wear them now so stuck with glasses due to having dry eye syndrome 😞. Being short sighted too, I see better without my glasses for tiny print and night time is a nightmare ir oncoming lights as they look like stars shooting off in different direction. Weirdly, I found pulling the car visor down like you would for sun and just focusing on what its a head rather than the street lights above najes it much easier to focus and drive

I have THREE QUESTIONS for anyone who can answer it, because Google is confusing me. If I have With the rule astigmatism- is my eyeball the shape of an egg rolled onto its side when viewed from the front (like looking at the longest width of a football) or and egg sitting vertical in a carton 🥚? Also, when I look at an astigmatism chart and for both eyes I see prominent on 90/270 and 60/240. What axis would be prescribed to correct this? Is it the same numbers I see on the chart or what? AND the third question. My right eye sees the above numbers on an astigmatism wheel spokes chart thing, but sometimes switches to 180/0 150/330 while I'm looking at it or if I blink. What is the causes for this?

    1. With the rule = egg laying down horizontally 2. 90/270 lines being prominent = axis 180 on your glasses 3. Bizarre, possible due to the eyes drying?

@@AntoniotheOptometrist thank you so much! That leads to some other questions whenever you have the time. You said the axis correction would be 180 for 90/270 but what happens if I see 90/270 and 60/240 at the same time? How does this impact the axis correction (I learned the axis correction is placed perpendicular) and is it more common for people to only see one prominent dark line for astigmatism, or multiple darker lines? And what are the squiggly kinda lines when looking at the spokes test, idk how to describe it like they are kind of wiggly 💀😭 doesnt stay forever just kinda really quick And yes I've been having dry af eyes 😩

From personal experience, yes. I have both myopia and astigmatism and each year my vision is a little bit worse, which is why even at 30 I'm still not eligible for surgery. That said, astigmatism can settle, but it's important to keep checking yearly especially how the curvature of your eye is going. My ophthalmologist also tells me to please stop rubbing my eyes every time, as that can make eyes with astigmatism worse, but i truly forget lol
