My ol boy was extremely smart. His picture is my profile picture. My wife after a week told me that he understood everything she said. She was scared of him at first cause of the bad rep that bull breeds have. He could see into a person's soul. I miss him terribly.

I’m alway amazed at how intuitive they are and how much they really pick up on. For example: my little 4 legged daughter knows based on what clothes I’m wearing if I’m leaving for work without her, going somewhere in the car she she can accompany me or just taking her for a walk.

Our old yellow Labrador knew all his toys by name! “Dyson, get pink dolphin” and he’d dig out his pink dolphin! His favourite was a lamb I bought him for Easter! That was ‘lamby’ and he knew where lamby was at all times and his first toy was Bagpuss… again, he knew where it was all the time! These toys are on top of his casket on our bookshelf…. 😢 he passed in January 2023 at the tender age of 9… he’s my KZread photo… that’s Dyson aka baby dog, coz he was the youngest of our pack…. I miss you baby dog 🐾😢

Dogs are uncanny in their abilities to understand their people, and in persistence in helping their people understand them. Many years ago we had four dogs and the city required us to get a kennel license to keep more than three. My parents decided the white shepherd mix had to go, though I argued against it, that if we had to get the license and stand for inspections, so be it. Finally, I turned to the dog and said, WHat do you think?" He made a rather steamy mess on the floor much to all of our surprise. My Dad recovered from the shock first and said, "He stays! He listened, he knew he had nothing to lose, and when asked, he made an appropriate comment. That dog is human!" Another dog came into our home when the others had coiled off the mortal shuffle, a Norwegian Elkhound puppy. Grey loved everybody and she loved her plush squeaky toys, except for a fuzzy platypus with turquoise bill and feet She was terrified of it, After about an hour of her skulking and hiding from it, I put it in a drawer in a closet where it couldn't scare her. About six months later she went to the closet pawing and barking anxiously. I opened the door and she stood on her hind feet pawing at the drawer. I got the platypus out and she grabbed it squeaking it with delight. It was her favorite toy for the rest of her life. I have had two more Elkhound bitches and now have a male picked for me by the breeder and the third Ekhound (she bonded with him when I boarded her at the kennel), and the breeder remarked that this puppy, picked for me the day he was whelped, would be a once-in-a-lifetime dog. She was right, of course. Every dog is a once-in-a-lifetime dog.

Dogs will understand any word that is repeated on a regular basis and is associated with something specific. For instance, the word “treat” in my home means a special dog snack, and the dogs respond enthusiastically. The word “dinner” or “eat” has the same effect as does “go outside?” and “leash”. They even know that “bad dog” means bad dog despite us NEVER using punitive measures on our pets, but the gruffness and displeasure in our tone makes them understand they’ve done something wrong. These animals want to please you because you are the source of their food, snacks and entertainment. They’re not stupid by any means, and as the saying goes “they know what side their bread gets buttered on”.

We had a shihtzu that figured out words we spelled. We used synonyms. She figured those out. We spelled synonyms backwards and she figured that out. Finally we wrote down things like, going to the vet, and only that worked.

I love animals too and wish they were capable of knowledge, but they're really just sense perception and instinct that determine their place in an ecosystem; Rene Descartes theorized animals are biological machines, and I think he wasn't too far off; I think it's best we try to relate to animals as they really are which proves we really love them rather than a fantasy we impose on them.
