What cold damage does to cacti
This is my Cephalocereus senilis or old man of Mexico cactus which I had for about 24 years and unfortunately succumbed to low tempeture and frost damage and I its beyond saving.

Oh no, that’s such a shame 😔 I recently lost a big Neochilinea that I think got a bit too cold, like you I was more annoyed at myself rather than upset for not catching it sooner or moving it somewhere a little warmer. So sorry Shane, 25 years is a long time to have a plant and then lose it. Spring is just around the corner though, let’s hope for warmer days and nights 👍🏻☀️🌵🏜
OH NO dear Shane, I am so gutted for you, its heartbreaking when we lose a cactus we have had for so long, I know that horrible feeling and there is nothing we can do to save it, and Hans had this happen to some of his cacti due to the change in growing conditions from Sweden where the air humidity is much drier than N.Ireland, so sorry Shane, and thanks so much for sharing this, Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from Belfast to Kerry for a wonderful new week ahead XXXX
Oh what a shame... I had a Cleistocactus strausii who rotten in the same way. They was 75cm hign in three stems and they went the same way because of cold and humidity in winter. Ireland is NOT a easy island to grow cacti in. It was much easier in Sweden. Dryer climat. The plants we got from you is thriving and it´s big bud in the Agapanthus now soon blooming. Take care Shane and we hope this 2020 will be fantastic with a warm and lovely summer! :-) XD
Very sad to lose such an old plant. Heart breaking.
What a shame. It’s always unpleasant to lose a treasured plant but when it could have been prevented by well known means , one can’t help but be angry at themselves. Unfortunately, every gardener seems to go through this sad experience, often multiple times, as I know all to well.
Poor thing. This is heartbreaking. Thanks for making this video.
Regarding the remains its looks to me more that it was some kind of espostoa that past away. Cephalocereus should have like 5 cm long white hairs. Cephalocereus and espostoa do overwinter in my Belgium- located greenhouse where temperatures can drop to 0°C. So possibly it might be humidity that killed your treasure. And that's what they become after 24 years regardless what their human given names might be. My codolences with the loss!
Oh what a shame to lose that beauty! Do you think it may be damp as much as the cold that’s killed the plant? As you say, Co. Kerry is relatively mild. Here in Oxfordshire, the winter has been pretty damp, but not too cold. I’ve lost a few plants very recently including a Gymno eurypleurum that just seemed to collapse suddenly 😿

Hi Carol, plenty of rain here so very high humidity here presently in Ireland so that with cold spells can mean death and damage to some cacti.
My heart breaks for you. How cold was it? Am asking because my 75cm tall old man survived three -10c frosts last winter and 42C this summer
I had the same thing happen to some of my cactus and I had them inside but inside was cold at night and I live in Japan. Some molded like that and some exploded at the roots with lots of water even though I didn’t give water. I was surprised. Even my 15 year old golden barrel cactus
Awww poor cactus RIP. Do you not have a greenhouse heater on in the winter set to go on at about 5c?
So sorry! I had mine indoors & still did the same 😪
It must be really sad. I get upset with insect infested cacti. It is not nice at all. I leave mine in my glasshouse but we don’t get severe winter. Still I brought in some cacti in just in case.
What a shame. Is this species normally quite cold hardy? The way the wool goes in circles round the body almost makes it look like an Espostoa.
Oh no!
😔
