Cactus growth and flowering 3 months more growth difference from my last video. Amazing the difference in size in just 3 months of hot weather here in Australia.

You would assume that putting the Trichs in a bigger pot would produce a larger cactus, but I've seen a few guys who have 6' tall plants in 9" plastic containers 🤔

Hopefully they wont need a repot for a long time. They were in tiny pots as seedlings with good roots. The golden saguaro is over a foot tall and over 12cm across, it got that big in a tiny 10cm terracotta pot. They certainly don't get huge root systems with there ability to store water.

Thanks, one of my grafted trichocereus hybrids, Psycho0 (psychonaught) fell over and was getting rot at the graft union on the echinopsis graft cactus. I cut it off clean and let it dry out for a few days and have re potted it to get its own root system. Funny today I saw a tiny little pup growing from what was left of the grafted bit. Cutting it allowed the soft tissue to dry out, it healed and the pup has grown. Amazingly though there was barely any trichocereus left on the graft to grown anything. I will have to video it and show you all.

I love your collection! I am. Glad KZread popped you up to watch. My Silver Torch has grown so fast since receiving her that it worries me. I prefer them wider than tall and skinny. Have you found that to happen in any of your columnar?

Sure, many of my cacti are getting very tall. I guess just keep it more restricted in a pot and at least it shouldn't get to full size, if the pot is not too big. As much sun as possible will always help. Most plants get leggy trying to reach stronger light. Your cactus however is a columnar variety. A just put a nice Cleistocactus Samaipatanus in a cool Mexican style pot. They are related to the Silver Torch, a bit greener and not as hairy. 🌵🌻

@@andyroo3022 Oh that I bet is lovely! My cactus get full sun in the "window" and strong grow lights on them, but something tells me that still isn't enough for this guy. I live in Ohio, so I can't keep him outside all year round.

@@LeafyConversations We got a lot of hot Summer sun home in NSW Australia. I live close to the sea, so no frosts or below freezing temps in winter. A lot of cold rainy weather in winter. So in the greenhouse to keep them dry, or kept mostly in under cover areas. Good drainage is essential. I barely water in cold weather, to avoid roots rotting. Sounds like your doing all you can for your plants. The only other thing would be a plant or reptile heat matt if they get very cold. On a timer and/or a thermostat. This would keep soil temps up for a few select plants.

It gets very hot in the greenhouse in Summer. I open the door in the day and the roof window. I have to water the cactus a lot. Greenhouse is essential in winter. We get a lot of rain and it stays cold. If the cactus were outside they will die from root rotting. From cold wet soil. This month we have had a lot of very wet weather. I almost stop watering until Spring arrives. The cactus are happy in the greenhouse protected from cold rainy weather. Some big cactus are okay outside in Winter as long as the soil is draining away the water, or you keep then away from the rain. I live close to the ocean, so It usually only goes low as 5 to 7 degrees Celsius in Winter. At my friends farm near Cowra in Western NSW Australia it gets below freezing 0 degrees Celsius. No cactus growing there. Lots of Kangaroos, feral goats, deer and wild pigs. Thankyou Stephanie🌻

Cactus soil mixture? Plz tell me

  • @andyroo3022

I mix a good quality potting mix(or soil) 2 parts with 1 part Coarse river sand for good drainage. I feel the sand is necessary to prevent rotting when the soil breaks down. The grit allows for healthier root growth. I just tried it and it seems to work. Make sur not to use fine sand. Must be coarse gritty river sand. Make sure any pots have good drain holes and sometimes I put broken terracotta pot or concrete pieces in the pot before I put the soil mix inside.
