What can help a Cervicogenic headache?

Today's video is looking at a cervicogenic headaches, how they present, their main symptoms and how they are managed.
This typically causes neck and shoulder tightness, neck restriction, pain and unilateral headaches (although can be bilateral).
We recommend getting your neck assessed properly by a musculoskeletal expert before trying these exercises to determine the working diagnosis as other treatments may be more appropriate and required to help initially.
Louise demonstrates:
1. Heat management
2. movement
3. stretching
4. self-massage
5. decompression technique for the neck

29 years old and suffered from cervicogenic headaches for nearly five years - sometimes it's unbearable to the point it's almost like a migraine and I really struggle to get through a day without taking paracetamol. These exercises vary to the ones my physio gave me, but seem to be the only ones to help! So thankful, it's the first time I've had a bit of relief from pain!

Hi dear, I am facing severe pain especially in the lower traps muscles. The pain becomes worse in the midnight and morning. In the morning stiffness is so high that it takes 30 minutes to ready for stretching. I have tried different yoga and exercises as well but nothing is working out. Due to working from home, I need to sit 8 hrs daily on the table and chair that is increasing pain event after working out 1 hr in the morning and evening daily. Request you to please demonstrate specific exercises and posture correction tricks so that I can make myself fit again. I saw your previous videos and those were really great. Looking forward to see with these exercises video.

Hello, thank you so much for your comment. We would recommend a couple of things: 1. Definitely assessing your workplace set up to reduce the risk of soreness and injury: kzread.info/dash/bejne/kamFo8qdYNWxcqg.html 2. Moving using our desk exercise routine during the day every hour: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dnicqpRqmbvWZLA.html 3. If the pain is still persisting then definitely getting it assessed by a musculoskeletal expert for some hands on treatment with a proper diagnosis Hope that helps :)

Looking for advice. I've been lead here becaause I have some symptoms of the Cervicogenic headache in regards to pain radiating over from back of neck and into my eye area all on one side, but I don;t have any sort of stiffness or pain around the spine at all. I do however get very stiff back muscles on my right side, just below the shoulder blade and a history of Subacromial bursitis on same side (treatment was pump me with cortisone and send me on my way). Headaches get worse when i've been using those muscles/areas more. I'm a gardener, so activities like digging and hedge trimming makes these areas more stiff on the right side, followed by the intense headaches on that same side. Doctors never seem interested for some reason. Headaches are occationally crippling, a sharp pain on right side of head over into eye area. Its such an effort to try to get doctors to show interest or run any sort of scans or test so i'm just asking here if youve any other ideas, before I go making demands. Maybe just tension headache?

Hello, thank you for your comment. Firstly, we are so sorry to hear that you are suffering with your symptoms and that it is impacting your work when gardening! We would be interested in the movement of the neck, shoulders and upper back as well as the muscles surrounding the area. Have you had your neck & shoulders assessed by a musculoskeletal expert or had hands on treatment? If so has that helped? As that would be our recommended next step to find the right advice and treatment for you :)

I find that I get headaches like this all the time almost daily and they come on pretty quickly and can get pretty bad. Could it be the pillow I’m using? Stress? Weak muscles? I find that stretching can either make it worse or not make much a difference at all. It causes my eye to feel extremely sensitive, and it radiates out the side of my neck.

Hello, thank you for your comment, this is a great question but we are sorry to hear you are experiencing pain with your neck. Firstly we would recommend having your neck assessed by a musculoskeletal expert as without hands on diagnosis it is incredibly difficult to be specific with the cause of your symptoms as it is very common that their are multiple structures involved in an injury. Have you had your neck assessed by either an osteopath or physiotherapist?

The exercises we have provided is one possible way of helping symptoms but we completely agree this is not a blanket solution for everyone and if you are finding that these are not working for you then we would 100% suggest having your symptoms assessed by a musculoskeletal expert to provide either hands on treatment if relevant or other treatment solutions/ advice tailored to you as there may be other triggers/ factors or conditions impacting your prognosis and outcome :)
