Do you have a Migraine or a Neck Headache- we discussed how upper cervical and neck can cause both

We discuss the difference between migraines and neck headaches. There is a portion of people that experience migraines that are actually neck headaches in disguise. Often the symptoms of migraines and neck headaches can be similar. These symptoms include unilateral head or face pain, pain referred to the occipital, frontal, orbital, temporal regions, typically moderate to severe intensity, but non-throbbing but reported deep in nature. Other similarities include headaches that are triggered by sustained positions or postures or awkward neck positions, restricted active and passive range of motion at the neck, pressure over the C2, C3, and C4 regions of the spine and the suboccipital musculature. Lastly signs and symptoms can be similar and include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, blurred vision, neck, shoulder and arm pain. When we evaluate selling with the previous symptoms and signs we take them through a thorough history and a McKenzie mechanical evaluation in an effort to see if any positions or movements will reduce or eliminate the headache that the currently complaining about. Sometimes you can have both a migraine and a neck headache at the same time and have a partial reduction or improvement in symptoms once you stretch the appropriate structures. One of the more common exercises that reduce neck headaches or cervicogenic headaches is gross cervical flexion and sitting. Oftentimes imaging may assist in identifying possible candidates for neck headaches, but cannot provide a diagnosis by imaging alone. Other serious medical pathologies or conditions can be picked up on MRIs and x-rays.

Thank you. Great video. Covers several points in a concise, clear manner. I've had migraines long before neck issues developed. Once the degenerative disc and arthritis issues began in my neck, between the severe and constant neck pain and several migraines per month, my quality of life has deeply been affected. Planning to try the exercises/movements mentioned in the video. Best wishes for good health to all.

Story of my life. Migraines in my 20’s and 30’s,debilitating and then after a few car accidents, same thing - degenerative disc in my neck. So just for fun I now get ocular migraines, always due to my neck being ‘out’. I did chiropractic for years which helped but then after my last car accident and whiplash, chiropractic stopped working and they suggested acupuncture which is everything! However, the issue always is that my neck will be ‘in’ for a long time but then it will go out from something (lifting something wrong, etc) but once it goes ‘out’ it’s a battle. I hate taking meds but have to when I get one of those awful base of my neck headaches or ocular migraine.

once a month I would get this. In my case it originates a bit lower around the area where the neck meets the right side of the trapezius muscle (don't know how to describe it better than that). I would feel it diffusing all the way to my right eye. Sometimes this lasts up to 3 days, and it is really uncomfortable and irritating. I used to think it was migraines due to coffee, bad sleep etc. One time I cracked my neck just perfectly (on my own) and the pain immediately disappeared.

I’ve been having neck headaches for at least 3 years now. Very similar to migraines, and pain goes all the way behind my right eye. Very light sensitive and I have visual disturbances such as visual snow in both eyes and peripheral flashes in my right eye for 3 years now too. I’ve been so anxious about it. My teeth also have a light chatter if I hold them together very lightly. I think it may have to do with how I sleep. I sleep on my stomach with my arm under the pillow and my head to the side. I know this can’t be good for my neck but I can’t fall asleep any other way. I think might clench my jaw in my sleep too. I know I should get seen but I’m scared to go through all the tests and everything. Up to this point thought I was getting MS or had brain cancer. But cervicogenic headache seems like it might be cause. Been so long since I’ve been without pain. What do you think doc?

Hello Dr. I recently found out that I have a herniated disc and annual tear in my cervical spine. Due to the problems in my neck, I relate to many symptoms that you mentioned in your video, but one of my symptoms is irregular pupil sizes, the right one sometimes becomes bigger than the left, is that normal? Also, I occasionally have bad migraines located in my eyeballs that medicine such as ibuprofen doesn't seem to help so I would most definitely try your stretches. But I am also having another problem. Almost every day I have been having frequent minor migraines located in my eyes and dizziness. The dizziness increases my anxiety which impairs my driving abilities. Do you know any solutions for my dizziness, any advice?

Plus I have been having shoulder pain too. NOT FUN! I tried the exercise that you recommended I noticed at first when I pushed my head forward BAM I got that same stabbing pain it started from the left side of my neck and shot to the left back of my head and the pain went away fast. I continued to do the exercises several times and I must say the stabbing pains stopped coming and going. I will try doing more of these exercises daily and see what happens. Sumatriptan (imitrix) is the only thing that helps my headaches. It is prescribed for migraines. I have always thought of my headaches as migraines, neurologists diagnosed them as migraines, but they are exactly as described in this video. Base of skull and behind the eyebrows. They normally coincide with increased neck pain. I have a c5/c6 disc bulge. Advil, Aspirin, Aleve typically provide no relief.

I have had migraines for about 40 years. My migraines are generally triggered by starchy foods or sweet drinks and foods. They alternated above the forehead up until about 2 yrs ago. Today, my migraines are only on the left side behind the neck. It definitely pains a lot more when I turn my head in certain positions. Sometimes I turn to painful positions and hold it there for a few seconds before relaxing. That brings a little relief after doing it for 1 to 2 hours, but I am concerned doing that may pop a blood vessel or damage my brain in some way. Is it possible to damage something in my head that way? I'm curious since am not a doctor or medical practitioner.

However, I noticed that the pain stems from my sub occipital region, mostly in my nerves there and it goes up to my head, especially my temple and eye area. I think it's more of a neck problem but, I'm also feeling numbness & tingling on my other parts of the body. Could neck pain causes numbness & tingling?
