WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE! - 85 C10 5.3 LS Swap - Engine / Transmission Wiring + FIRST START! - UTX

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Welcome to Ugly Truck, we got fun and games! We're finally ready to wire up the 5.3L and 4L60E transmission in this 1985 Chevy C10, and we're DEFINITELY ready to hear it run! We take it one circuit at a time, following the wiring diagrams for the 2005 Chevy Suburban 5.3 L59 donor truck, and set up our new fuse boxes. Remember when we said "Relays are your friend"? We meant it! The new 5.3/4L60E takes a lot more amperage than the old 305, but by looking at the power distribution diagrams for the 85 C10 and the 2005 LS, we can use relays to carry that load. Sorting through all these wires and soldering the connectors is a long and tedious process, but hearing the exhaust for the first time was worth all the effort!

    I've been doing swaps for 10 years at least, got the fuel systems down, the mounts, exhaust and intake. I've been using aftermarket harnesses and PCM's for all because they have been modified engines I've built. I have a friend that wants a stock 5.3 in his '52 Chevy Deluxe just to push it down the road and I think this would be a perfect time to look into modifying a stock harness, I have boxes of them, and stripping them to the bare necessities to run a reprogrammed, stock PCM. This looks like a really good start and I'm going to reference your other video's. Thanks for the info.

    The more videos I watch about doing wiring for an LS swap, the more I think I'm just going to spend the extra money and get a Holley Terminator X setup. It's not that I'm not capable of doing this type of wiring, I just don't know that I want to spend that amount of time on it. I'm already going to have extra wiring to do so I can keep my factory gauges. I also like that with the Terminator X I can program the thing myself if I decide later down the road to add a turbo or an E-85 module or any other modifications that require the ECM to be reprogrammed.

    Thanks for watching! Glad we could help! Yes, you can definitely use the original LS fuse box if you have it. That's what we did on our 1970 C10. We talk about it at the beginning of this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hmRlzLmMetfacqw.html . We send our computer out to a programmer. The security system has to be removed in it in order to start the engine, but you also want it programmed for your tire height, final gear ratio, and what transmission you're using. If you're not swapping the transmission, you would just need the security removed.

    Awesome information, thank you. You’re cutting wires like F3, F9, D12, and all of those are labeled on the information you printed. How will you know which wire is where after you install you’re new boxes? You are not labeling them as you go. Will the next owners just need to check for continuity? If I hadn't had that I would have checked each circuit to confirm what I was working with. When I build a truck for somebody else, I always use the donor fuse box with the donor harness and connectors which are labeled. If you are bolting it up to a 4L60 you will have to buy a kit that has a different output shaft and housing to bolt the the 205 to. I have that setup on our 74 K10 and it works perfectly. I'm a little unclear on the multi-relay setup. By using several realys, apparently with the coils wired in parallel, you are multiplying the energizing current by the number of relays in parallel. So, how do you determine if the PCM can accomodate the increased switching load? I would think there's a limit to the current the PCM can sink before limiting or buning up. Clearly you haven't burned the car down, so it works, but is it within spec?

  • @UglyTruckExperience

    @UglyTruckExperience

    Жыл бұрын

    The relays supply power to the individual items that they are running on the engine. The pcm just turns the relay on. Thanks for the comment

  • @blackmanops3749

    @blackmanops3749

    @@UglyTruckExperience Yes. I was referring to the energizing coils (pins 85/86). These require some amount of current. Wiring them in parallel requires the pcm to source/sink current for EACH of them. The question was how to determine what the PCM current source/sink capability is so as not to exceed it.

  • @UglyTruckExperience

    @UglyTruckExperience

    Жыл бұрын

    Ok. I get your question now. The next time I'm messing around with a relay I will check its amp draw. I dont remember how I wired this specific one but when what your talking about is an issue I would just use one relay to turn any other relays on.

  • @lubblegarage
    @lubblegarage2 жыл бұрын

    I followed your lead building my harness. Unfortunately my fuel pump requires a #10 wire with a 50 amp relay at the pump. Is it bad to double relay or would you suggest to undo the fuel pump relay and use it to trigger one rear relay? Thanks

  • @UglyTruckExperience

    @UglyTruckExperience

    2 жыл бұрын

    Sounds like your going to be making some serious hp. In this case I would use the smaller relay to trigger your high amp relay back by the pump. That kind of insures that your going to get good trigger voltage on that high amp relay. Let us know what your building that is going to use that much fuel. Sounds fun. Thanks

  • @lubblegarage

    @lubblegarage

    2 жыл бұрын

    Using a setup from Tanks Inc. Just a 650 hp rated. They specifically do not state to put the relay at the pump per se. They just want the 50 amp with a circuit breaker before the relay. I was thinking about using an extra space in my fuse box for the 50 amp relay and run the wire to the pump. Is having the relay close a better option?

  • @UglyTruckExperience

    @UglyTruckExperience

    2 жыл бұрын

    I just looked at their installation instructions. I wonder why they use a circuit breaker. It really shouldn't matter where the large amp relay is located. I would put it wherever it was easiest to wire and get to if you needed. Personally I would use a fuse close to the battery or power source, not a circuit breaker. But that's just my opinion.

    I have never worked on that old of a Jaguar but it should be pretty straight forward. You would just determine the wire that went to starter solenoid and the wire that fed the coil. We own a 97 Jaguar xj6l that we would like to do the same swap. Keep us informed on how it's going. Thanks

    How can you wire a 5.3 in a 1995 Chevy tbi

  • @UglyTruckExperience

    @UglyTruckExperience

    Жыл бұрын

    Swapping a 95 chevy would be very similar to swapping most any other. A different wire harness and ECM. A 95 may already have 4l60E or 80E transmission which would help. Making everything on the instrument cluster work properly is the biggest obstacle in my opinion. Thanks Jerry

    Does it have the wiring harness? If you have the harness and you know the VIN of the vehicle it came out of, you should be able to buy a new computer for it.

    Since you are swapping to a 4L60E transmission that utilizes a lock-up type torque converter, did you wire lock up through your brake switch? I did not watch the entire video as I can convert factory harnesses to stand alone harnesses on my own. What I DO KNOW for sure is that any vehicle that had a 4L60E, or 4L80E, and probably most, if not all, modern automatic transmissions receive a 12V+ source from the brake pedal switch (when it's NOT depressed) that actually powers the TCC lock up circuit in the transmission. It's pin 33 on the BLUE connector on the 411 PCM's. That pin MUST have 12V+ in order for the transmission to lock up. If no power there-the trans will NEVER go into lock up. You might think... "eh, no big deal if it does not lock up". and you would be DEAD WRONG. If it can't, or does not, lock up, it will over-heat the trans and FRY the transmission on a long drive on the freeway. For simplicity, you can simply wire pin 33 on BLUE connector so that it has 12V+ any time the key is "on" or in the "run" position thereby bypassing the brake pedal switch. However, if you want TCC to unlock when you tap the brakes, you need to go through the brake pedal switch. If you do NOTHING else after reading this-go and verify 12V+ at pin 33 when the key is on. If no voltage-STOP driving the vehicle as you are going to destroy the trans! I see it's been 1 year since you did this swap. Hopefully you have figured it out. For anyone else reading this-take note! My shop is hired to sort out these issues on other peoples LS swap projects and this is the #1 thing that almost every swap needs corrected.
