LS Swap DONOR TEARDOWN - What PARTS do you NEED? - UTX

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today at Ugly Truck, we're answering another frequently asked question: "What parts do I need for an LS swap? What parts can I get from a salvage yard?" We're tearing down this 2004 Chevy Tahoe, and salvaging all the pieces and parts we can from it. Here's a list of what we kept:
- ENGINE - Obviously! This engine has a ton of miles and is missing a couple freeze plugs, so it will go to the machine shop to determine if any of it is savable.
- TRANSMISSION - This is a 4wd 4L60E, which we don't need. It will also need to be rebuilt due to mileage, so we'll convert it to 2wd then. Stay tuned for that video!
- TRANSMISSION COOLER LINES - We reuse both ends of the transmission oil cooler lines, both at the trans and the radiator.
- WIRING HARNESS - We'll need the main harness running from the fuse box to the PCM to the engine and back to the O2 sensors, as well as a few other pieces and connectors.
- UNDERHOOD FUSE BOX - We'll need the main fuse panel, as well as its base, cover, and lid.
- PCM - Another obvious one! Plus, the PCM cover, mount, and bracket. And make sure not to loose the rubber seals in the connectors!
- MAF SENSOR/AIR INTAKE BOX - Whether you plan to use the stock air filter box or not, you'll need the MAF sensor. We also like to keep the intake tube bellow and clamps in case we need them.
- DBW ACCELERATOR PEDAL/HARNESS/CONTROLLER - We'll definitely need the accelerator pedal and the ETC module on the firewall, and the harness that runs between.
- RADIATOR/HOSES - This radiator is trash, and we won't reuse these hoses, but they still work great for mock up. Plus, Jerry has a thing for spring clamps.
- DEGAS BOTTLE/COOLANT BOTTLE - We'll be installing brand new bottles on our next swaps, but this one is pretty clean and could definitely be reused.
- POWER STEERING/ALTERNATOR BRACKET - We won't reuse this one, but we'll keep it around as a spare for one of our personal trucks. If your donor has hydroboost, hang on the the return line. We'll use it to adapt the original power steering gearbox to the LS pump.
- POWER STEERING/TRANS/OIL COOLERS - These are optional for a swap, but we'll be installing them on our 6.0 swaps coming up.
- AIR CONDITIONING - We'll reuse both the high and low side switches, and we'll need the interior controls to tie the AC into the PCM engine controls.
- EXHAUST PIPES/O2 SENSORS - We like to leave the front O2 senors and unbolt the flange at the manifold, and cut the pipe just in front of the catalytic converter, so that we have plenty to weld to on the new exhaust system. On these swaps, we won't be using the rear O2 sensors.
- BATTERY BOX - You'll need the battery tray if you decide to keep the battery in the original location. Plus, the trays can be cut into brackets if needed!
- ENGINE COVER - The most obvious!
- VARIOUS FITTINGS/CONNECTORS/CLAMPS - When in doubt, keep it! You never know what might come in handy.

    Brings back memories my wife and I doing this just last year! I could not walk after we did this. I did not see you unplug the tranny neutral safety bundle near the shifter. Your viewers may need a heat gun or hair dryer to loosen the factory glue and when installing the plugs again. Great video. Wish I used a lift. We removed the cross members and the rad support and pulled it out a a complete unit.

  • @UglyTruckExperience

    @UglyTruckExperience

    Жыл бұрын

    We've pulled them as a complete unit, but we knew this engine and trans would both need rebuilt, so we went ahead and separated them. That's a great point about the neutral safety connector! This one had a different style connector without glue, but we should have warned folks about that one. That's not a connector you want to break! Thanks Scott! We'll definitely acknowledge that in an upcoming video! 👍👍

    I've been harvesting LS lately with my bro and when we pay for a "complete engine" we get all of the pig but the squeal. We even save AC compressors if the system looks freshly emptied. We get the full harness and drive by wire pedals when so fitted since it doesn't cost extra. I already had a towable engine run stand we're equipping with a simple standalone harness made from donor wiring and will remove ATS so each computer we harvest with the engine or drivetrain is usable by us or future buyers. The computer fun will be easy for anyone who knows how to flash firmware on anything else and there is plenty of software available...one way or another. We cut the frame rails after unbolting (we don't trash good sheet metal because that's rude) or cutting off the fenders and core support etc. We unbolt the steering column slip joint then recip saw the frame rails so the drivetrain rolls forward hanging off the torsion bars (no torches permitted or I'd have snipped those in a minute). Vans don't have torsion bars and that's a good thing when cutting off the front frame since it's even easier. www.amazon.com/Diable-Reciprocating-Blades-Cutting-Dismantling/dp/B07DNJN4PK kick so much ass we often make all our frame, line and sheet metal cuts using only one blade. Our local salvage yard issues them to their guys. Run harvested seat belts or get fancy with your own sling beneath the exhaust manifolds and the salvage yard forklift pops the complete drivetrain out with no fuss. Those coolant bottles get brittle so unless they feel flexible we leave them. Check out the dual electric fans on some trucks and SUVs because they're much nicer than a waterpump mounted unit and usually dirt cheap.

    Seems like the water pump was installed by an amateur and later filled with water. The water froze and the plug popped. This is a guess but telling from the rust stains on the radiator and in the holes for the water pump. Also water only coming from the reservoir is also an indicator coolant wasn't used. Thanks for another great video.

    Hello Rodney. This is one of my favorite videos to watch. I have a blast when I tear down a doner. I will have to sit down and watch this video and get back to you. Most of the wires on the passenger side are related to the AC, O2 sensor's, coolant level sensor and also the MAF which is pretty important. If I am not sure what it goes to, I just keep it intact and sort it out later. Thanks for watching and commenting. Jerry

  • @UglyTruckExperience

    @UglyTruckExperience

    Sounds like you did alright. The wires on the right hand side that run along the frame are the O2 sensor wires and that is where that engine harness ends. I have not done any that used the second sensor, so that last two feet ends up getting snipped off. There is the connector that runs down the driver side and ends up plugging into the transmission and the speed sensor on the right side. That would be all of them. Let us know what your working on. Would love to hear about it. Thanks. Jerry

    how about a LS video show which flywheels fit 5.3, clutch pressure plates, clutch disc's fit pressure plate and fit different tranny input shafts, pilot bearing or bushing , and hydraulic throwout bearing or mechanical assy and clutchfork and throwout bearing...my biggest issue is 4.8 flywheel fits 5.3, but finding proper disc size matching pressure plate and flywheel surface size and input tranny spline count is not a OEM part... tho i have found a $900 flywheel that does solve all these issues....hoping your experience n maybe subscribers experience have tackled these parts and help to locate matching parts coordination without compromising efficiency or quality of performance ...dont need highend racing parts, a high quality oem equivalent without breaking budgeted LS project....your clutch woes video didn't cover all my needs...plez point me in right direction ...thanx

    So far I have not had the opportunity to do a standard transmission with one of our ls swaps. I do know that it is not as simple as a person would want it to be. The times that I looked into it, it almost looked easier to go with a later model transmission bellhousing and clutch. If its 4x4 that adds another problem. If somebody out there is reading this comment and has some info that would be great. Thanks Jerry

Just wondering what the chances of you breaking down on "The White board" the blocks inside the fuse box and what is needed in each one to complete the swap.... Thanks Matthew, by blocks in the fuse box are you asking about the relays? When I use the OEM fuse box from the donor I pretty much leave everything in the block until I am finished with the swap. Once done and everything is working I go through and pull the relays and fuses out that are not used. We are going to be doing a bunch of wiring videos and will make sure we address that. If you are asking something else, please let us know. Thanks Again

    Thanks Matthew. That motor will come right out with that front differential removed. I just unbolt them from the frame sometimes and let them just hang if I'm not trying to save the axles and diff. Taking the intake off will make it go much easier also, giving you access to the upper bell housing bolts and grounds on the back. Let us know how it goes. Thanks

    The wiring harness for a 4l60 4x4 and a 2wd 4l60 Is exactly the same. The wiring that goes to the transfer case for the 4x4 is a separate harness that comes over to it from the frame. If I have the intake removed from the ls , most of them will come out without removing the front differential. I do remove the front drive shaft just to give me a little extra room to work.
