5.3 UNCHAINED - 1978 C10 Square Body LS SWAP - Installing Engine & Transmission TOGETHER - UTX

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today at Ugly Truck, we're installing a 5.3 LM7 and a 4L60E trans in a 1978 Chevy C10 the hard way! We start by installing a new low profile oil pan, windage tray, and pickup tube from ‪@JEGSHighPerformance‬. Next, we find the balance point of the engine and transmission, and get the straps and chains set up so that we can safely maneuver it into the engine bay. That shallow pan comes in handy as we're tipping the engine and transmission into place, but it's still pretty tricky. We don't recommend installing the engine and trans together like this, but this video gives you a good idea of what it takes, and how steep you have to tip the engine to get the transmission into the tunnel. This method adds some challenges, but in the end it saved us about an hour of work on this swap.
Here's a link for the oil pan kit from JEGS: www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/50275...

    Hey Don. I went to just using the Holley low profile pan. We went with the cheaper ones a couple of time and I did not like the baffle at the bottom of the pan. It would not fit around the pickup tube without the transmission being slid back from the engine block or modifying it. Have had no issue with Holley's, so I just stick with them. Let us know what you go with and how it goes. Thanks. Jerry

    What are your thoughts on the 4L60E vs the 700R4? I've heard that the 4L60E is just an electronic version of the 700R4 and from my personal experience I find the 700R4 to be a highly unreliable transmission.

  • @UglyTruckExperience

    @UglyTruckExperience

    2 жыл бұрын

    They are virtually the same transmission aside from the 60e being controlled by the ecm. Both of them have their week points but as they got a little older in the production of them a lot of their issues were weeded out. You can build a 700r4 with some upgraded parts and have a really reliable transmission. The only thing I don't like about 700s is the throttle vacuum cable. When I buy 4l60e's I try to buy them later on in their production date. 2004 on up. Thanks

    Can you fit the OE style AC compressor with these engine brackets? Do you need to trim the frame rail? Can you also use the OE fan clutch assembly? As far as the oil pan, does this setup require a low pro oil? I bought sa 2002 Chevy 2500 Truck with 72k miles on it and I'm planning to swap the 6.0 and 4L80E into it.

  • @UglyTruckExperience

    Hey Rubicon! Jerry makes a bracket that keeps the AC compressor in the OE location but moves it in clear of the frame rail. Here's a link to a video on that: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aqmut5Kdmc7LpZs.html Yes, you can use the stock LS mechanical fan clutch. At stock ride height, the stock oil pan is fine, but if you ever plan to lower it, you'll want a low pro pan. 👍 Hope we answered all of your questions! Keep them coming! --Emily

    Have you ever looking into different motor mounts? There’s 2 different companies that make some really good motor mounts for these squarebody swaps and allows you to run the factory truck pan with it being level with the crossmember! One company is Tejas and the other is gowenmountain speedshop. Tejas scoots the motor 3” forward and lifts it up. The gowen mounts also lifts it up the same amount but their mounts are completely adjustable forwards and backwards. Tejas is $100 shipped to the door and Gowen with hardware and shipping was around $130. I originally started with the ict ones and the threads stripped out super easy and I got aggravated and ordered the tejas mounts and found out they had 3 week lead time so I also ended up ordering the gowen mounts because they can be here in 2 days and the owner is sending me a powder coated set for no up charge. Downfall is you can’t reuse the factory driveshaft which I wouldn’t advise anyways

  • @UglyTruckExperience

    @UglyTruckExperience

    Жыл бұрын

    We are well aware of these motor mounts. When you raise an engine say one inch up in the front, you also have to raise the tail of the transmission up another inch in order to keep that angle. If you have a body lift on the truck you can do that but when working with stock stuff it is just not possible. You have to take the driveshaft angle into account. Thanks for your comment. Jerry

  • @jameswow2836

    @jameswow2836

    Жыл бұрын

    @@UglyTruckExperience thank you for the reply Jerry! That is definitely something the manufacturers do not mention. Both manufacturers make their own cross members as well but don’t make any mention of differences in angles. How would you solve this other than lifting the transmission? Adjust pinion angle?

  • @UglyTruckExperience

    @UglyTruckExperience

    Жыл бұрын

    If you do not have a body lift on whatever truck you are working on there is not enough room to lift that transmission tail up that high. You really are doing yourself a favor by buying a low profile pan or keeping the stock pan if you are not lowering the truck. Keep those lower mounts as close to stock as possible. The drive shaft angle is a very big problem when you are trying to build something as a daily driver.
