Welcome to Mystara: Quagmire

Ойындар

The second expert level sandbox module after Isle of Dread, this time carving a path through the jungles and swamps of the Serpent Penninsula in search of the doomed city of Quagmire. It's a module in dire need to DM assistance, and the maps are extremely sparse and it relies heavily on wandering encounters. It was actually retconned in Champions of Mystara to hundreds of years in the past to make room for the nations that module presented.

"It's a swamp, so don't try to build a castle there..." "When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp."

Although this module is pretty barebones and repetitive I am pretty nostalgic for it. It was one of the first I played and DM'd waayy back in the day, and it was the first coastal/swamp/underwater module we tried.

I share the opinions expressed below. It's a "hollow" module that could be expanded by a DM with enough time and imagination. Or slotted into another, better module/adventure in a similar environment. And the artwork was... well, almost non-existent or so forgettable that it might as well have been absent.

Not a fan of this adventure at all. I just re-read it before watching your review. The main theme of the module that I noticed is repetition - mount traders in each three cities, the 3 debris tables are all almost the same and the 3 cities listing oddly have things like longbows being located and undisturbed at the same locations despite the tower cities all being occupied. The encounter tables with the preset encounters organized by area type are a good idea. Also a spiral sea-shell tower is pretty exotic though I wouldn't call it a city on its own either. Too bad they never did a picture aside from the silhouette. Another odd thing is that since the "city" of Quagmire is supposed to be a known trade location you can simply take your boat past virtually all of the encounters straight to the city, get past the lizard-men, load up the remaining civilians and leave...there really no reason at all to stumble through the waste, the desert, the hills, the jungle, the swamp etc when you can just bee-line it. Definitely needs to be fleshed out as you said.

My thoughts exactly. Same with X9 The Savage Coast, though I don;t think the writer (Merle M. Rasmussen) can be wholly blamed for this. Apparently, he had a lot of ideas drafted out that were never included in these modules, which is why they are very 'bare bones'.

Just out of curiosity, would you be interested in doing a “Mr. Welch rewrite” for this module, ala the way you have with the WOTI timeline or how you plan on doing the Kingdom of Ierendi? I’m sure that not just myself, but many of your subscribers would love to see your take on what this module really could be. Especially now that there’s the Champions boxed set to use to update it and really flesh it out. I know that this request must sound odd, particularly because I’ve argued with some of your thoughts about how you’ve had events play out, but I really do respect your writing ability and my criticisms aren’t meant to be mean. They’re really more like the differences between Ixion and Nyx. More philosophical, not personal. Either way, you’re work is always appreciated and I’d love your take on what YOUR version of this module would be.

I've thought long and hard about it. The issue is the module needs a complete overhaul. Quagmire needs to be turned into an actual city with trade routes and other places nearby for them to interact with. The region needs to be populated, as it stands the emptiness of the module is its biggest criticism. Comparing its size to the Isle of Dread you would need about 50 set encounters for the same ratio. I would like to look at Rasmussen's original idea and see what can be salvaged from that, either scale down the size of the region for a more coherent story or scrap the module and make it more into a regional book for the players to explore.

What is the best resource for data on Slagovich? It seems quite an important hub for putting adventures in Quagmire or the savage coast? I also want to use it in expanding the X4/X5/X10 campaign i'm considering re-running (35ish years from when I last played them). Thanks.

There's an article floating around the internet wear Merle Rasmussen describes his original idea for the module. Where instead of a Sandbox it focused just on the relocation, but TSR wanted a Sandbox module so they took his original idea stripped out his plot and this is what we got.
