Weep for Manetheren (Moiraine Speech - Book Version)

This is the whole "Weep for Manetheren" speech that Moiraine Sedai gave in Emond's Field - read by Rosamund Pike in the new audiobook version of "The Eye of the World", book 1 of "The Wheel of Time". I cut out all the narration, interruptions of other characters etc. for maximum immersion.
Weep for Manetheren. Weep for what is lost forever.

We Wheel of Time lovers have no idea how lucky we are that Rosamin Pike has attached herself as a producer. If we want to see our beloved adaptation completed, there must be a large number non-book readers attracted. Egwene is one of my favorite characters, and I like Mat, but find him overrated in the fandom. But that's fine. We just agree to disagree. But denying that someone could be a fan of something just cause they didn't hate an adaptation that you abhor, is pretty reductive IMO. Sure things change and look different. There are changes to the plots and seemingly changes to the lore and mechanics of the world, but I think the themes and characterization are largely untouched aside from cosmetic changes that don't matter much (the most grating was that Moiraine wasn't short, which we see plays into some interesting and hidden feelings of self-consciousness that she has in New Spring). Sure Mat was more immediately scoundrel-like, but that honestly kinda fixed what I feel is a boring character in the first book, but Nynaeve and the rest of the main cast feel very familiar to their book counterparts. Perrin's arc was the greatest casualty and I can't comprehend why they gave him a wife just to fridge her immediately, but things should definitely improve in later seasons. Cosmetically things are certainly different (and there are slight changes in the lore, but I can ignore them since I doubt they specifically will cause any big changes later on in the show's plot) and if you don't like that, then you can hate the show. I don't have a problem with that. But you shouldn't tell me I'm not a fan cause I don't care about those differences as much. I'm a person who prefers for adaptations to be a good bit different from the books cause it gives me something to new to enjoy. That's not the case for everyone, but it is for me. Like any worker undertaking a task she uses the skills she has to do the best she can. Hers is not to say how such a work is done for she does not have the power to say that, money men in expensive suits determine that. The books are too cumbersome and extensive to be done on television as in the books. Hard decisions had to be made and deep cuts were inevitable. Just attempting to film the series was a bold undertaking and an entire channel with the resources of Disney or Netflix would be required to fully do it justice. That is not an option even if we would love to see that. On the plus side, it’s a far superior adaptation than The Foundation is.

This show NEEDS more than the as-of-now 50-60 episodes. Obviously I could understand some changes being made, books combined, etc -- I mean look at Book 3, Rand is almost ENTIRELY absent POV-wise! But you cannot possibly tell me you're gonna give this series fewer episodes than a show like GoT, which only has an estimated 7 books, which was done in 73 episodes, that most people say needed MORE episodes to wrap up. Wheel of Time is 14 books (planned 12, originally IIRC). Even if you combine books, you need more episodes. At least 10 ep seasons. I dunno. The show is OK, but the more of the books I read, the less and less I find myself liking it. Say what you will about Jordan's writing style, but the man knew how to tell a story. (and no I'm not like a hardcore purist or anything, just think the show isn't nearly as good as it could be, and even some of the changes kinda do more harm than good (like the whole resurrection aspect, hard to fear for someone's life if they can be brought back -- in the books Moiraine straight up tells Rand "you are not the creator" in Book 4; the most powerful male channeler himself can't bring someone back from the dead, kinda big deal!))

Frankly, I find the series to be quite good. Not perfect by any means but they cut out a lot of "filler" material and make some of the characters more tolerable. Generally the female characters in the WoT are frustrating beyond belief and it's a welcome rewritting of some of them. It strikes me a similar adaption as Lotr. You'll find book fans curse Peter Jacksons name for his adaption but it's important to understand that changes must be made from a written work to a film. I think they did an excellent job here.

@@TheIfifi I disagree with pretty much everything you wrote. I read tlotr before the movie, and while jackson made quite a few changes, he kept the tenor and tone of tolkiens work. He adapted tlotr for the screen. Amazon missed the entire plot of teotw. Its ham handed attempt to keep the dragon reborn a mystery caused them to upset major plot points later down the road. The litterally referred to lews therin as "the dragon reborn" it's obvious they didnt even bother to read the books. They reduced the magic system to air bending. But hey, we got to spend an hr watching warders mope around and cry, that was certainly more entertaining than exploring camylin. Things needed to be cut from teotw to make it work in a 8 hr series, everyone was expecting that. Jordan is famous for being long winded, and many of the escapades with rand and matt when separated are redundant. What they didnt need to do was create new characters and new story arcs. There is a solid 3 hrs of amazon original story filler they added unnessisarily. The changes they made, changed the nature of the characters and the greater plot. Nyneave, in a vacuum, is obnoxious in teotw. But in context shes the only one that is behaving with any reason. Her village was attacked right after a strange couple show up, and immediately afterwords they absconded in the dead of nightwith 4 of the teenagers of the now ruined village. This would litterally be the inciting incident in another book to chase down the people that stole the children of the village. Of course she would be antagonistic and distrustful. Moraine is coldly calculating and efficient. Shes a master problem solver and the most powerful, and simultaneously restrained character in the first book until the last chapter. Egwene is a 16 year old girl with the heart of a lion, but never feels like a stereotype. Elayne is one of my favorite characters. A bit sheltered and naive in some ways, yet more highly educated than most of the non aes sedai characters we meet. Shes also a bit prim and hauty, like most nobles in the series, but has a heart of gold. What, exactly, did you find annoying about them? They all have unique strengths and weaknesses, and a different way of looking at the world based on their age and station.

@@Typexviiib Well, that is a lot of to respond to... So I'm just looking to the women. The antagonism towards Moraine makes sense through the early bit of the first books, I'd imagine... When we reach book four and everyone still hates her guts despite her having done everything humanily and inhumanly to save them? It gets a bit much. Then there is the recurring theme (Which moraine is actually fairly free from?) where every woman... And it really seems to be 90% of all women in the books... Are genuinly convinced that men are grown up monkeys with sheep brains... It gets really old to see them just go "Oh you.... MAN!" as if it's an all encomposing insult to just throw at anyone with a penis without thought. I get that it's a female dominated world but I don't think that justifies the level we're dealing with here. Comparing it to something like GoT where we have a clear patriachy, you don't see characters just go "Get out of here you stupid cow-headed bitch" when a woman opens her mouth. All the women, act like such narcissistic bitches it's insufferable. Rarely without any exception. Now to support it a bit, it does seem some men are really oblivious in how to interact with women but it's just absurd to the degree this takes.... And don't get me started on the romances... Frankly, it seems jordan crafted a magnificent world, but he cocked up the characters something massively. At least the gender-dynamics. I won't deny the development of characters which is fantastic but the gender-dynamics basically boils down to. "I don't understand why this woman is angry with me?" "Oh you 'wool-headed' fool of a man! Go be stupid somewhere else!"

@@TheIfifi sorry, I write a lot. This is a topic I'm pretty passionate about. I've read most of the books multiple times. if we're getting into the later books I'm not going to disagree as much with your points, but season one was entirely involved with the first book. Believe me there are like 4 books that i groan when we follow "the girls" Youre honestly not wrong with the "narcissistic bitches" and " grown monkies" comments. Heres the thing though, we only get that impression because of Jordan's writing style. He writes in third person, from a particular characters point of view. You are privy to every thought that goes through their head, and what they think happened isnt nessisarily what happened. They are unreliable narrators. One instance is the running joke about elaine having her nose turned up at everyone, a courtly mannerism. Then we, from her POV, hear her complain about a veil always getting stuck in her mouth and wondering why no one else has that problem. People think things they dont say, or even mean. Idk about you, but I have some pretty twisted thoughts go through my head when interacting with people. Jordan let's you see his characters without their filters in place. You'll notice that, for instance rand, spends a lot of time thinking about being crazy or not being worthy, but he spends a lot of time doing what he thinks is right. Nyneave spends a lot of time thinking about how stupid....well anyone that isnt her....is, but spends most of her time working towards worthwhile goals. As someone that constantly feels surrounded by children that dont have their priorities straight, nyneave is a character i identify a lot with. It's hard for me to be in her head, because she can at times feel like a mirror. I read all of about 2 chapters of asofai, but I did watch the series like a filthy casual. I'm aware they made a few changes in the first 4 seasons, and fans are generally receptive to them as either being improvements or nessisary for the medium. That said, I would not have been suprised if the hound or tywin, or Tyrion had said the cow headed woman comment. Which brings me to gender dynamics. This has become of far greater concern over the last 15 or 20 years. On the old forums of the late 90s wot talk was hot, and very rarely were gender dynamics brought up. Its largely due to a shift in main stream western culture in the 21st century. You can actually go back and watch a lot of 80s and 90s tv shows and see similar idealogies. Married with children is a great example. The yin and yang of the sexes was a theme that Jordan pursued through the series, he thought women and men were two sides of the same coin, and this is steeped in eastern mysticism (which also was hot in the 90s), as is the wheel of time itself, and the belief in reincarnation. I go back and forth between whether wot is actually a matriarchy, it feels pretty egalitarian in a lot of ways. Now, I'll admit that the series attitudes towards gender doesnt really match up with any near modern way of looking at it, but it does take place several thousand years in our future and several thousand years in our past. Gender ideologies have changed a lot in the last 5000 years, and will change a lot more in 5000 years. Especially if multiple calamities keep removing technological advancements that have brought upon the current thought process that men and women can do the same things and behave the same way. Gender ideologies, like all idealogies, are a function of their culture, and the cultures (plural) of the wheel of time feel plausible to me. Keep in mind that most of the "women" in the series are teenagers, as are most of the "men", at least as far as main characters. There are recurring themes amoungst many characters that these are litterally children that havent fully developed. Im currently listening to book 7, and there are a lot of complaints from elayne and nyneave about not having grey hair. One of the ways this manifests amoung boys is foolish reckless behavior, and girls tend to get a rise out of laughing at boys being foolish and reckless. "Everyone hates moraine" ya, they do. Moraine Is one of my favorite characters, I was literally stunned when she......died..... and waited years for resolution. Heres the thing though, nearly every single character is terrified of aes sedai. They are considered dark friends by default. Think how bad their reputation has to be that they bound themselves to an oath to tell no lie. Moraine Is a puppet master that openly admited to being willing to kill anyone of the main characters that got In her way. She prodded rand while he was a) entering into adulthood and b) dealing with a very traumatic revelation. From the POV of the ef5, she has been nothing but trouble, even though we the reader know her intentions are pure.

@AbsentDay thank you. I found the series to be passably enjoyable as a stand alone work, but it wasn't wheel of time. The wheel of time, like the lotr, is a classic good vs evil tale. Teotw is extremely derivative of Tolkien. A wise wizard goes to a remote backwater village and tells the protagonist they must leave to protect all they hold dear, gathering friends and allies along the way they are separated from the wise wizard that was their greatest protection as they are pursued by evil while experiencing the wider world they had no idea existed. This culminates in a bittersweet battle at the end of the book that makes it clear there is no turning back, the protagonist must fulfill his duty. This synopsis works as well for teotw book as it does the fellowship book and the Peter Jackson adaption of the fellowship. It doesn't really ring true for the Amazon series though. If you changed the names of the characters and places of the Amazon series it would pass as simply another fantasy series that borrows a few set pieces from the eye of the world. I thought most of the emmonds field battle was well done and an interesting choice over the way the book handled it. Most of the shadar logoth sequences were enjoyable, and the ways were excellent in my opinion. I thought Lan and nyneaves romance was handled with more nuance than the book, which always felt a bit rushed because we spend so little time in Lans head. I thought the children of the light were done dirty, as were the warders. Bypassing camlyn is a horrible choice in my opinion because so much of rand and Elaine's chemistry is a result of his bumblefooted naivity that he had at that point in his arc. Rand now knows he has the power and he's the dragon and that should make him behave totally different. There are so many of these types of changes that just makes it hard to imagine them making major story arcs feel organic in later books. I also hated tams power sword, which is just a basic katana and I really didn't like the forced diversity of Emmons field. In pre industrial societies most places were not very ethnically diverse and the books handle thus really well in my opion. Having each location look, sound, and smell completely different gives you a feeling of depth. I do think most the casting was pretty tight in spite of this complaint, and if the story had been better executed I probably wouldn't have even noticed.
