Week 9: Renovating our original 1970s Kitchen! | STOP renovation & almost LOST THOUSANDS of dollars

Ойын-сауық

Explanation and update: We had to stop our kitchen renovation after demolition until we acquired the permits needed to renovate a kitchen so that is one of the reasons we haven’t had updates on what is going on. It’s been a waiting game to be able to move forward. 😩
ALSO we trusted a contractors word when they told us the wall we wanted to knock down was load bearing and required a support beam across to support and be up to code. (Thousands of dollars to do but we went forward with contracting because we believe this will be game changer for the layout of the house) While waiting for the work on their end to start our gut told us to get a structural engineer in to take a look at the wall, get a second opion. Turns out the wall is not load bearing and that is something we can do ourselves within our permit approval. We almost lost thousands of dollars and work to get something done that was unnecessary to do. This project has not been easy and after all the things that have gone wrong it’s easy to be discouraged and feel like giving up but we are not going to let the setback hold us back. We are now able to knock wall down, open up the kitchen, and resume renovations! I just hope it’s smooth sailing from here 🤞🏼

Here’s an update of what’s been going on! We haven’t quit on the kitchen. 😂 also always get multiple opinions when deciding to hire out projects for your home! The extra effort and time might just save you thousands 😮‍💨

I was getting worried about you and the progress! Thanks for sharing your troubleshooting, and experience. Projects like this are totally intimidating, and I'm happy things turned around in your favor.

File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and get all your dollars back from that contractor. Also. When you hire ANYONE make sure they are licensed and in good standing. Your state likely had a website where you can check business names and/or licenses. Good luck!

That’s good to know! Didn’t know there is a place you can check online. All we went by were online reviews

@@theyorks definitely don't go by online reviews alone. Businesses can pay people or provide other incentives to get "good" reviews. The best thing is to ask around, especially your neighbors. 😉 But, now you know! 😊

Curious why you filled the hood vent hole. Are you installing a ventless hood or microwave over stove type thing? Or moving the location of the new stove?

We are doing a ventless hood. The microwave that has one attached

@@theyorks makes sense, I hope you love it! We’re about to do the opposite: remove the microwave with ventless hood and install a venting one 😂
