Worse Mistakes during a Kitchen Remodel that will cost you Thousands!!

** WORSE MISTAKES TO MAKE DURING A KITCHEN REMODEL THAT WILL COST YOU THOUSANDS**
Hi everyone!
Thanks for coming back to another video! I've been getting many questions about the worse mistakes you can make during a remodel and these are my top 6!!
1. Wasting Space or arranging Space wrong
It’s all about grouping tasks and saving steps within a kitchen. A lot of people hear about the work triangle and you can find lots of research about this on KZread but it’s about grouping sections like a wet / prep station for example. If I am at my sink I will use it to empty dishes
2. Making Walkways too small
Big one, and I’ve worked on a kitchen last year where the homeowner just kept trying to make the island bigger and deeper. I’ve told him this is our max, you will hate it if the walkways are too small. The building code only requires 36” but in real life that is so unfunctional and feels cramped. I would always shoot for 39” or even 42” if I have the space. But is has to be a minimum of 36” per building code. The NKBA actually says for one cook we should plan for 42” and for a 2 butt kitchen we should plan for 48”.
3. Oversizing Islands
This kind of goes along with the walk ways and just the hole proportion of the kitchen. The island needs to fit proportionally into the space so if someone just over cramps an island it just doesn’t feel right and in the end you may hate it and now you can’t change it. I did a custom build once and I kept telling the client the island is way too long and way too skinny. Even laying it out on the floor with blue tape she just wanted to stick with it and once it was installed she did agree and wished we had shortend it and made it a little deeper.
4. Changing things during construction
This is probably the costliest thing you can do, changing this during construction. Now you’re having to stop the work because trades build on top of each other. You may end up paying trip charges, you may have to re-work certain things like plumbing and electrical rough ins, you may delay your project by waiting on new materials and so on. I did a project once and the homeowner had the hardest time visualizing anything and once we started the changes were almost daily when people were trying to install. I think on that project the change orders were more than the whole initial project itself.
5. Not checking after your rough in phase
Probably biggest mistake I see and very costly!!
6. Not checking for heat registers

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou for pointing out how inadequate the 36" walkway at an island is! We have gone in countless new builds recently with huge kitchens and islands and plenty of space but the designer only put 36"-38" between the island and the rest of the kitchen cabinets! Literally you cannot open the dishwasher and a drawer on the cabinet across. The space is so wrong but designers just keep designing to that stupid 'minimum' and builders keep building it. For me the 42" minimum and 48" max for space between island and cabinets across. I will look at the NKBA info that you cited. When visualizing a space, as you said with the skinny island client, I will use the painters tape of course but will also take cardboard boxes that a large piece (like a vanity) has come in and keep it on the work site to use for 3d visualizing during the construction. It can really help a client, that simply can't get the feel of the space before wasting loads of money building something, not make an expensive mistake into thing that even they will hate once invested in it.

I'm one of those difficult clients who have a very hard time picturing things in my head. I really need to see at least a drawing on paper, and preferably a 3D model. Thankfully, modern software makes this possible. To that point, it would be super helpful if you would include pictures with what you are describing. How big does a 36" walkway look? A 42"? Show a picture of an island that is too big for the space, and one that is too small. Stuff like that. Great video though, thank you, I'm a new subscriber!

Hey thanks so much for watching!! I have to admit, I love doing these videos but I am very busy working on our Kitchen Projects with my clients and as much as I like to put content out there to help, I would not have time to draw up every scenario that I am talking about. I have a lot of people I work with that have the same problem with not being able to visualize spaces like that either. I always recommend taking a tape measure and pulling out 36" vs 42". I also like to use blue tape with my clients and tape areas out with them on the floor. I hope this works and you can get some great info out of the videos. I appreciate you watching!! 🙂

I have new sage cabinets installed and opted on a floating island with a wood top and and stand alone white designer style pantry with more of a rustic look. Saved a lot of money on both and am really happy how they contrast each other. Love the triangle talk and took it to heart! My triangle is perfect lol. I have a smaller kitchen so opted for less clutter and kept that 42" spacing throughout as you suggested. Not sure if you know how much you truly help people? Maybe they don't post or subscribe but I'm sure everyone takes a little of what you say with them after watching. Thanks for this and keep on keeping on!

I am so happy you are taking away good tips and tricks from the videos 🙂 Obviously I do this for a living but quite frankly I can't service most of the viewers and am just so happy me wanting to talk about this Kitchen topic all day is helping people work through their own projects. I truly appreciate you watching and leaving your comment. Enjoy your new kitchen!! I really believe that turning your space into a functioning and beautiful organized space with personal touches increased living standards and overall happiness !! 🙂

What is your opinion on Klearview Cabinets? I just discovered your channel since I'm remodeling a kitchen. I have been to Tacoma several times to visit family. However, we live in Nebraska.

I am trying to select kitchen cabinets and I would like stain cabinets but my floors are walnut wood floors which are more traditional . I am looking for a more modern organic feel so can I do a rift cut raw hide cabinet with the grain vertical or will that class with my dark walnut floors? The floors will fad over time. Should I go with a painted cabinet to be safe? Thank you!

Without looking at colors it's difficult to give the right answer but I wouldn't be scared using stained cabinets on wood floors. I also like combining modern features with some rustic elements. I hope this helps!! Maybe search on Pinterest for several pictures of stain cabinets and take a closer look of the floors until you find something that is similar and see how you like it. Thanks for watching!!

Thanks for all Your hard work ….. I’m designing my island …. It’s going to be 2.5meters long , what width do u recommend ….. also I have like a 4 hob gas burner on the centre of my island and a 8 hob gas burner on my countertop opposite but but more on the left , I have a 41inch gap between the counter n island - is that ok?

41" is a decent walk way, I think you should be perfectly fine. On average if your island has seating on the back, the countertop will be somewhat 38.25" deep. From there you can always go deeper if your space allows it. Typically with a cooktop on the island, you want to allocate for 18" on the backside to protect people sitting on the island from steam and the hot cooking area (if your space allows for it!!). Hope this helps and good luck on your project!!

what are the busiest &/or slowest months of the year.. what are the most difficult q/a about clients and the common mistakes clients make and how to address them..

Hi there!! I would say the slowest months are usually January as most people are taking a break but our January was still very busy! I don't think I understand the second question, can you please explain? I think sometimes clients push too fast on wanting to get started. On a kitchen remodel, the planning stage and discussing all the details they don't think about are so important to get it right down the road!! I hope this helps 🙂

How much should a kitchen remodel design cost?

  • @thematerialbar

    @thematerialbar

    Ай бұрын

Christine, great question! Typically if you work with an interior Designer they will charge anywhere from 8-10% of your total project cost. Our company has a team of specialized Kitchen & Bath designers which is way different and because we focus on selling the materials like cabinets and more, our design fee is a way smaller amount. In the next 3 months we will be adding downloadable design packages & templates to the website ready to purchase for people taking on their design themselves to give you all the necessary input you will need to do it yourself! I hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙂
