Weber 26 inch Kettle with Slow n Sear VS Char Griller Akorn

I've recently got several questions about the weber 26 inch kettle with slow n sear vs char griller akorn. Today were going to do some tests and comparisons. Since they cost about the same by the time you add the acessories to them at the end of the video I'll let you know if i could only have one, which one I'd put my money towards. If you have any other questions about these grills that I didn't answer in this video please leave a comment or send me a message on one of my social media pages.

Good comparison , I have used weber kettles for years and when the last one wore out I replaced it with the Akorn I agree with the temp running away and not easily adjustable to get back where you need it to be . On the high side opening the cover is about the only way to get it back down and you don't want to have to do that. But I can't believe the fuel efficiency thanks again

Ashley Steffes thanks so much, you’re absolutely right the fuel efficiency on the akorn is insane. I have no idea how long it would run if I fully loaded it but it would be a loooonggg time. Honestly for me if your temps get too high the easiest way to fix that is to open it up and take some lit coals out. Otherwise you’re gonna be waiting a while to wait it out lol. Thanks for watchin👍

I've done 18 hours pork butt on one load with the Akorn, however, I like my weber kettle just for the temp control. The Akorn gets away and is tough to bring down. With the weber you have to add fuel but it is easy to do. If doing long cooks on the Akorn and have to add fuel it can be a pain in the @$$. An Akorn with a temp controller would be the best option but then your looking at a $700-$800 for your setup. That alone is why I prefer my Weber. You can modify the Weber for a little extra $ and seal it up to help with the fuel use.

I keep coming back to this video for a few reasons. I own a Weber 22, learned all I know on it. Love it, and want the bigger version. But, my brother in law owns an akorn and I've done a few cooks on it. I'm starting to get used to the idea of owning one. You said your choice your money you would go the Weber with the slow and sear. I think I'm going to head that direction as well since I'm already a vet using the kettle. An akorn is in my future though no doubt. Great points in this video 👌

I have the 26" with the SnS and my Dad has the Acorn. It is truly a tough choice. I love cooking on mine and I love cooking on his, but for different reasons. I don't think you can go wrong with either. He added an aftermarket charcoal grate lift to get better searing temps, which raises the stock of the Acorn a bit, but I love the cooking space on my 26er.

Just bought a Akorn and love it, I agree that I can and do get 90% of the same performance out my kettle (do not care for slow and sear) with the Snake method you can go low and slow, and if you modify the snake you can effect temperature either higher or lower by the amount of fuel in the snake. Now the Char-Grill is GREAT as I am in Northern Illinois and yes when it’s 20 degrees outside there is a huge difference in the performance of the Kettle or my offset, of the barrel in comparison to the Akorn. With all that said, compared to a Stick burner, no you can’t get the same flavors, but you have to feed it every 45 minutes to a hour. All in all if you live in a cold climb and want to keep cooking! They are the leader by far!

I’m in Australia and I myself have just bought a Kamodo last week. The day I bought it I decided to slow cook a 2 kg piece beef scotch fillet. It came out great and was in the Kamodo for around 4 hours. The next day I smoked some chicken breasts. Again they were awesome. Then the third day I turned a piece of silverside into pastrami. That was cooked over a 6 hour period @ 235 degrees farenheit. I never had to add any charcoal to any of my cooks and you don’t need a lot fuel to do a cook for 6 hours either. It is extremely efficient. Everything has turned out awesome at the moment. I find it easy to control the temps myself but for the last couple of years I’ve been using a Forneto oven, so I’ve worked out how not to over shoot my target temps. Just for a bit of extra help I have just purchased a Tip Top Temp unit to put on my Kamodo. I’ll be using this a lot more for my low and slow cooking as my Forneto is hard to sustain low temps for a long period of time. If the first three attempts at cooking in my Kamodo are any indication of performance then I’m wrapped.

pistnbroke2 awesome glad to hear it bud. I haven’t used a tip top temp but I’ve thought about it. If you can handle those temps they are amazing at home cookers for sure. Is your Kamado ceramic or metal? Just curious, either way, glad your liking it and I can tell you that it sounds like your first three cooks went better than my first three cooks on the akorn 👍

I'm fixin' to go to Lowe's and pick-up my first Akorn that I bought online. I'm super excited. I've used a weber 22.5" for a least 30 years, because I have a large family and needed the space to cook a lot of food. About 10 years ago I bought the cast iron grate that fit the 22.5" and I fell in love with grilling on cast iron. So I knew last night that I was going to buy a grill, but I wanted something that I could use to smoke when I wanted to. I smoked a turkey on my weber about 3 yrs ago and the meat turned out great but the skin was like rubber. At any rate, I tasted a brisket once that was cooked on a Kamado and I realized that is the way to go. So, my options are spend $300 at Lowe's for a Akorn, or spend $165 for a new 22.5" weber, and then another $120 (or so) for a cast iron grate. Watching this video has been informative, but I just wouldn't trust the weber for long slow cooks or smokes. I would think that you would need to keep a closer eye on it. And, since the weber (to the best of my knowledge) doesn't come with a cast iron grate, then you're paying almost the same amount for a weber as you would for an Akorn. I know I have a lot of practice ahead of me on the Akorn, and I know it lacks certain things, but the weber was designed to grill, not smoke, and I'm looking forward to using something that was pretty much designed to do both. Great videos on this channel!!!

Kevin Morrison hey Kevin you’re exactly right, the akorn is a great deal and as long as you stick with it for the first few cooks and figure out how to control that temp you’re golden. Probably the biggest reason I recommended the kettle here is I think a lot of first time back yarders may get frustrated with that learning curve. It is a great cooker though I just counted up how many videos I have using the akorn the other day and I think it was like 21 lol. That obviously doesn’t even count how much I use it when I’m not filming. Thanks for checkin the video out bud 👍

I have both. Except, my kettle is a 22 inch as the 26 inch is not available in Australia. With the Akorn, after you learn how to dial in the tempurature, you don’t overshoot. For Briskets, chuck etc, the Akorn is really in another league. I think it is worth to spend time on how to use a kamado. It really is enjoyable for smoking. I can get over 30 hours on one of load lump charcoal. Also, the high tempurature you can get is amazing. It’s almost scary in the beginning. It is not a buy in morning and use in the afternoon cooker for an inexperienced kamado user. However, for steaks and sausages, I like the 2 zone set up in the Weber with the slow n sear. The lack of a proper 2 zone system in the Akorn can be a little frustrating. I sometimes fire up my Weber Smokey Joe to for searing after indirect cooking in the Akorn. For chicken, I like using the rotisserie in the Weber. But, the Weber goes through fuel like there is no tomorrow. The Weber is a dependable and a great cooker. However, it doesn’t have the “WOW” factor of a kamado. I do have to say something about the Kingsford Professional briquettes. I know they’re popular in the US. However, in Australia, we have briquettes that last a lot longer. The Kingsfords are easy to start and can get very hot. Maybe that is their attraction. For longer cooks, I can get briquettes that last a lot longer. I tend to use the Kingsford Professional for hot and fast cooks. For me, why choose? Have both. Also, for entertaining, two BBQs are very handy. The ultimate might be the Weber Summit. But, expensive! (not available in Australia). Plus, I still think it is worthwhile having a 2nd BBQ.

Lenny hey there bud, I feel like you and I are on the same page on most points there lol. I definitely love both of these pits and they both have their own strengths for sure. There are a lot of cooks I do that I need the real estate of both so I’ll throw my big meats on the Kamado and do chicken or ribs on the weber. The reason I used kingsford professional for this test is I was hoping it would burn out quick lol even though that wasn’t the case because the akorn just kept goin lol. Great points to bring up, thanks for checkin the video out.

Lenny I have them both also, and love them both for different reasons. Kamado cooking is great, especially if you like oven cookIng! I love oven cooking very much the charcoal favor is the best. And is the Akorn fuel efficient? Try it with an ATC,,it will reduce fuel consumption even more! I love my DigiQ DX. The kettle is also one of my favorite cooker. Doing chicken is probably the best on the kettle, but doing ribs is also great. However the kettle doesn't have that oven cooking experience, and that tilts it in favor of the Akorn But honestly these are the 2 best cookers out there which are priced below $300. I don't have any problems letting the fire out of hand....my DigiQ DX takes that issue away.

Ive been on the fence for getting a Kamado Joe but over the holiday weekend I was at my brothers and found out he had a char-griller Akorn! I was like heyyy ive been looking at getting a kamado! He let me try it out and I was TOTALLY impressed with its performance. The thing that proved to me how its design worked so well is when i would open the lid my glass's would fog up with moisture , my gas grills never did that.. lol. proving to me how well it held moisture in the cooking chamber and the food turned out fantastic the way grilled food "should" taste..! I was sold on it.. I just saved myself a wad of cash over the 180 lb behemoth Joe.. Side note: I think the biggest complaint Ive read about the Akorn is the ash pans rusting out... theres a simple solution to that...keep the ashs cleaned out and keep it covered if its kept outside AND keep the vents open after the coals have been snuffed out ( at least 20 hours to be safe ) to prevent any internal condensation. Simple science , hardwood ash and water / moisture makes Lye,, Lye is extremely corrosive..

When a person decides to buy a grill, regardless of who makes it. Right then, right there. Figure the cost of the grill AND a good cover. Not the bare minimum of a cover. A GOOD one. I paid $100 for my cover, on sale. It does such a good job. And makes everything in, perfect order. It has a little clip type thing that goes around one of the legs of the grill. So the wind can't take it. I have had wind where that cover could have went to "Oz". Get a good cover. Don't buy a grill because you can just barely afford a $400 grill. Because that grill is really $500, figure in the cover.

I had a Weber 20"' last time. It rusted out in 3 years. I sealed it with paint and it lasted two more. And the Weber was way shallow. My Akorn has a smoking stone between the meat and the fire. I can put a drip tray on that fire stone if I need to. My Weber could not do those things. Polish sausages need a drip tray. I cooked a flat of sausages (12 or 18). The grease came out like somebody left the oil plug out,. That kind of situation need a drip pan. Grease make flare up, and flare up ruins the meat. I gave my Weber away. In reality. I paid my Weber (5 years old), and $400 for my Akorn. And I consider that a blessing of a deal.

I have had my Akorn since 2013. I can cook 4 butts easily using the raised rack. I have cooked 15-18 lbs briskets and 24 lbs turkey. It can easily get up to 500-600 F to cook pizzas. If you get a Digi Q it is even easier to keep constant temps. And, BTW, you can get a SnS for it as well. Two bags of charcoal can last me 6-12 months. I have used it in many competitions and scored a first place brisket with it. I feel that it is far superior to any kettle grill. And you can get them for $288 at Lowe’s, Home Depot or Walmart.

I have owned both of these and weber wins all day and twice on Sunday. Three main reasons for this 1 the akorn is to efficient at low temperatures you can get bad smoke from the wood because its smoldering. 2 the construction is subpar on average it will only last 3 years before its rusts out unless you keep it in inside. 3 it is way to easy to over shoot your temp and recover and I know how to use a kamado I have a kamado Joe and love it . This happens because of the efficiency of the grill and the materials it is made of a ceramic kamado you can bring it down in a reasonable time.

mudcat12800 hey bud thanks for watchin. Aside from the 3 years thing...because I’ve only had mine for two and it’s holding up just fine so far.....the other reasons are exactly why I picked the kettle in this video. For most people learning how to use the akorn if they aren’t into it will be a big problem. That being said I cook a little hotter, usually 275, the akorn will do that extremely well. However there was a learning curve, and for me you hit the biggest pain right on the head of if you over shoot it’s gonna be a while and to me the easiest way to fix that once it happens is actually remove coal from the cooker lol. I definitely love both of these grills but it sounds like you and I were on the same page when it came to recommending one of them to the average Griller who didn’t specifically want to try a kamado. The kettle is just easier no doubt👍

  • @HorthornNZ

The Acorn is not hard to keep temp. Get it to about 20 degrees from your desired temp, then put the bottom slide on 1 and leave it alone. Put the top vent to just past the small indent and it will stay at about 230-250. It will creep up temp over time as more charcoal starts to burn but you just shut the top down 1mm at a time to keep temp. If you get a large overshoot in temp, open the lid for a few minutes, close the bottom vent, and close the top vent a couple of mm (don't forget to open the bottom vent back to 1). If you open the lid to check food, close it and leave it alone and it will go back to its comfortable temp. Also, store it in your garage, they are metal and metal left in the rain will rust, after 3 years, mine has no rust at all.

I haven't cooked ribs on it yet either,I'm a old Weber guy load the opposite side n smoke on the other,my temp was supposed to be 250 for 6 hrs..well when I opened it it jumped to 384. But I didn't check them like I should have ,they were so tender the bones fell out ,but the tub didn't set in properly they were gummy,I had to eat them like pulled pork ,I liked it but she likes the tug of a rib not so soft. So...I watched t-ray do some ribs backyard style on his ceramic egg. I should have pulled mine way sooner ,I just thought like on my old Weber I knew how they'd turn out... nope. Took me a long time for the temperature to come down. Women forget, when they started cooking u mess up more than u can eat,I ate mine. But I was curious on the Weber 26 ,I was so tempted but for 260$ for my kamander ...I had to!!! Good job on your competition too, another thing trying to move a akorn or kamander SHO AINT EASY!!! I can't take mine out of the garage cause of the lip getting it back in ughhhhh. I've had both my hips replaced n I'm not as agile as I once was!!! Anyway good to hear n see ya. I do have some funny stuff on my channel Rocen Rol . Thanks

Great question, it was a tight choice back then and if I remember I choice the 26er because it was easier to figure out how to use right out of the gate and there was a slight learning curve to the akorn. I absolutely do love the akorn, I have 3, and now with the auto kamado version if you want there can be practically no learning curve. I never had to add any charcoal and I had to snuff it out in the end, preserving those coals for my next cook tomorrow. Nice video, but I will have to respectfully disagree with your decision. :-) Seriously, when I was looking into what to buy originally, the fact that the Akorn was so miserly with the charcoal was huge. Akorn blows away any single wall unsealed grill. Never use briquettes in an Akorn. Learn how to use the Akorn properly, set the vent settings for the proper temp and how to set up for indirect on the Akorn and she’s rock solid and you never have to open it until the meat is done. I’ve cooked and competed on ceramic kamado style grills for well over 25 years. The Akorn cooks just as well as any ceramic at 1/3 the price.

Hey bud, I think all grills have their place and some are better at certain things than others. I’ve used briquettes and lump in the akorn and find they behave very similarly. Kamado cooking is great but the Akorn fire box rusts much faster than a Weber kettle. I like the innovation in the Akorn: it looks great, has easy controls, it's lightweight and easy to remove ash. All that does not offset the rust issue. If you grill several times a week then the Akorn is a poor value.

TheOritek hey bud, thanks for checkin the video out. I agree if you don’t take care of the akorn and leave the ash pan without emptying it and don’t cover it it’s gonna break down quicker than the kettle because it’s metal parts aren’t covers by porcelain. However I make sure I keep mine covered outside, empty the ash pan after I use it and perform other maintenance and it’s still fine after a year of heavy use. Now if you go check Tom horseman’s channel he has one that is five years old that still looks brand new.

Joao Calzada hey bud, absolutely a slow n sear and a 1950s bbq. If that’s too old then how should I feel about all the world famous joints in the south that have been using open pits since 1912 or 1918? I’m the kind of pitmaster who enjoys having his ability measured, if you go back in my channel at my first ever comp we cooked second place chicken on the weber with the slow n sear, and if that’s not ok with ya just hang on till the end of the month and we’ll make a video on how we do at the Jack Daniels. I could absolutely get a searzall if all I wanted to do was sear steaks, it costs half as much as a SnS and gives me a little less than half the functionality, seems reasonable but I also like to cook low and slow and the slow n sear makes that very easy on the kettle. Look I’ve cooked on smaller kettles that this on this channel up to a 10000 dollar Myron mixon 72xc and I can tell you across all the pits I’ve ever used, the pitmaster’s bbq will taste the same no matter what he cooks on. Don’t get too caught up on grill bling, and focus on the ability to perfect the craft itself. If you really want to know what kind of s pitmaster I am sub to the channel and come on out and sign up for the next comp I’m at and we can let the judges compare us apples to apples. Thanks for watching have a good one 👍

Michael Moses I was actually worried about that because I used to just use the akorn. With each different kind of smoker I use I find that the Akorn puts on plenty of smoke flavor in relation to other cookers. If you’re having trouble we may be able to help ya out. How are you setting it up

Typical Minion Method of Charcoal and i Used 3 Chunks of Pecan wood, the temp and texture of the meat was the best I've ever cooked but I felt like It was really lacking smoke. (my current cooker is a small vertical offset, so maybe im just used to alot more smoke?) I'm looking to get another cooker that I can use as a grill and as a more effecient Smoker and leaning Akorn until my recent Komado experience

Michael Moses yeah that sounds about right, you may just be used to more smoke. One thing that you could try is use a different smoke wood, for instance hickory is in the same family as pecan but it has a stronger smoke flavor than the former.

@@Cookoutcoach So i'm looking to get a 2nd cooker (something I can BBQ and Grill with and cook bigger cuts like Brisket With) Do you think that because it's so much easier to add wood to the slow n sear mid cook, I should go with the Kettle plus Slow N Sear to maintain that level of smoke flavor I'm used too?

  • @Cookoutcoach

Michael Moses well maybe, what I would do is every half an hour or so in the beginning, before you hit an internal temp of 140, you could hit it with an extra blast of smoke by throwing a handful of chips or pellets onto the hot coals of the slow n sear

Switching to a Weber Kettle 22" from an Akorn. The Akorn was a fun grill but it does not hold up. I have a cover and it still rusted out after 3 years. Chargriller CS won't cover it as well. I've heard the Weber is just better quality.

Cody Bishop hey Cody, sorry to hear about your akorn, but hey in my experience variety is the spice of life and I definitely like to collect and try all of the grills out there myself. The kettle is definitely a beautifully simple design and I enjoy it a lot because of that. I’d really recommend checking out the additions adrenaline barbecue company has for kettles, it makes the experience of the kettle that much better for sure. I’m sure you’ll like the Weber and if you have any questions always feel free to hit me up

The akorn definitely takes a little time to get figured out after using a regular grill. They heat up so easy that when you're used to a regular grill you over shoot the heat and getting the heat to drop is a pain in the ass. Once you get them figured out you can make ribs/pork butts with hardly any extra $ for charcoal

For me it's the Akorn all the way. Got the Tip Top Temp and it's works great on the Akorn. Can do a 14 hr cook at 250 with about 1 - 1-1/2 # of charcoal. Best grill I have ever had.
