Char-Broil Kamander Mods

Фильм және анимация

I was going to put this video in with the Quesadilla video, but that video was already 20 minutes long. In this video I show my indirect heating plate idea that I came up with. The griddle I had made in a local fab shop. The griddle plate is 1/4" steel plate 20" across with a 10" radius, fits like a glove. All total was less that $40. It worked out quite well.

Hey Tim, I love your videos. This one is a favorite of mine. I have an Akorn cart grill (got extremely luck on the price at the Home Depot). Your videos are inspiring. Now I want to try this modification on my grill as well as your recipes.

Tim, thank you for sharing. My wife and son bought me a huge, multi-level smoker. I talked to my wife and she thought I wanted a Komada grill instead. She was right. So, I am picking it up today. I watched this video and I am motivated to get your set up. I have access to a machine shop/welding shop. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for your kind words. I started this channels in part because there is so little information about these grills. I think it is an awesome cooker and your father in law will love it. If the new grill does not come with one, be sure to contact the company and get them to send you the steel intake pipe. They will ship one to you free of charge. Mine even showed up on a Saturday via FedEx. As far as you already having a grill and a smoker, Ive got a gas grill, an Old Country off set barrel smoker, and this Kamander lol. I dont think there is too many lol. Grill on!

  • @timsbudgetbbq6711

It is in a way. What I want to accomplish here is slow cooking thick cut of meat, then moving it over to the coals for a nice sear. You can do that with the pan, but you have to remove the grill, take out the pan, and put it all back together. This way I just move the meat to the heat. Thanks for the question.

  • @timsbudgetbbq6711

    @timsbudgetbbq6711

    6 жыл бұрын

The bottom piece is 24 or 22 gauge that I bought at Lowes. It is something "that'll do in a pinch" be cause I had an idea that I was not sure would work. The vertical piece is 1/8' though, from an old lawn mower deck lol. I do not know the width of the other part off hand, it is the width of 1/3 the diameter of the lower grate. That is what I based all my measurements off of. I think the only thing I would do different is place some gussets from the vertical to the horizontal for more support. It does work quite well though.

were you able to keep the temp low on the brisket? I'm very interested in this grill, but I've seen a lot of reviews of people having trouble maintaining low temps like 250. I think they probably got it too hot before trying to control the heat, which is supposed to be the best part of having a kamado type grill, but I have no experience with them either.

  • @timsbudgetbbq6711

You must absolutely start small. Just like with any other kamado style grill. I place charcoal briquettes in the bottom and nestle a tumble weed fire starter in there and light it. After its lit, I place a few more on top, put the grill back together, close the lid, and open the dampers all the way. When the temp gets within 100 degrees of your target, choke them off. Briquettes, to me, hold temp longer and steadier than lump. (That may just be me lol.) My briskets go for hours with less than a twenty degree swing, far better than I was getting on my offset. The temp holds even better with water in the pan. I watch the temp on my Maverick. When it starts to climb a little, I know its time to add more water. Its a fine grill for the money.

Thanks Tim. Yeah, it really looks like a deal for somebody who can't afford an Egg or Kamado Joe. Jeez those things are expensive. I just found it on line for $199 with shipping was only $242. I've seen other people post finding it for like $150. I think I'll spend the difference on a good meat thermometer. Can you recommend a good one?? Have you found the on board thermometer on the Kamander to be relatively accurate. I know that's generally a weak point on most grills.

Have you or do you know of anyone that has used a temperature control fan for longer cooks on the Kamander? The PartyQ from BBQGuru is what I am thinking about using. Their site doesn't have any feedback from buyers and the best I can tell their solution is use an adaptor that is cut into the shell, not happening.

Lance, I have not used it heard of using a controller. I have an idea for one, but I need practice on CAD and a 3D printer lol. My idea would also need a fan and a controller. There is no way I’d cut into the grill though. I think given the way those Gurus work, you could mask off three of the four holes on the intake side and make it work. I just don’t have the money to spend on that kind of stuff lol. It’s a need it/want it kind of thing lol. Good luck finding a solution though boss!

I have not ever owned a kettle, but they are two different animals. Kettle is single walled and would likely take more to do the same job. In the kamander, I just keep reusing the same charcoal lol. I really like this fire grate mod. Makes indirect cooking really easy when I want to cook those really thick steaks slow and easy, then go in for that sear.

By the time you finished the burgers looked not just over cooked but, they looked dry and unappetizing. The ingenuity of the mods are great, no doubt but, the meat looked very unappetizing. In addition, the bell peppers did not look cooked enough. They still look stiff. No apparent wilting at all. In fact, the video did not show any seasoning of the meat or veggies. No salt. No pepper. Nothing.

I can appreciate your input. I was, and still on a diet. At the time this video was made I had already lost close to 100 pounds. I used a home made, low sodium taco seasoning in the meat. The meat itself was a 90/10 blend, so they may have been too dry for some. The peppers and onions were to my liking. I often say in these videos "This is how I do things" not "This is how it has to be done." Repeat it or not, its up to you. I like to have fun with my grilling and I take ideas from other sources and bend them to my grill. Thanks for the comment.
