Weaving 2 Separate Fabrics

Double weave is a magical beast, isn't it? While there are so many facets to it, today I'm taking us back to the basics - weaving 2 separate fabrics at the same time.
If you haven't tried it yet, you can totally do it! I've got you! Enjoy some double weave.

    Another thing that can be done if you have enough shafts is 3 layers attached at opposite sides to make a fabric 3 times as wide. Which is a way to achieve the sorts of widths for standard sewing on a loom as small as the baby wolf is.

    This is really a totally unrelated question -- well, sort of unrelated. It's about weaving, so I guess anything goes: I've been warping my loom, front to back for 25 years. Always holding the cross in my hand. I was curious how you do it. It's become such a part of my routine, I hate to change it at this late in the game but perhaps I am making more work for myself. Yet, when I see what people have to go through to use lease sticks and set up a raddle, etc., geesh....it's exhausting looking. Thoughts? Thanks, Jill, Oregon

    Hi Jill! Anything goes, my friend! No worries! I also warp front-to-back. While I've never tried to hold the cross in my hand, if it works for you, great! I think there are so many variations on how to dress a loom that when you find something that makes sense to you, you might as well keep it! With all that being said, I'll include a few videos that show how I handle the cross. If you think something in there will improve your process, give it a go! Otherwise, steady as she goes! You've got this!

    I'm very much enjoying the double-weave series. (Haven't tried it myself yet, but am planning my first one.) A question about this particular one: I understand the appeal of the other configurations that can be done with double-weave (double-width fabric, tubes, intersecting layers), but not this one. What might be a scenario where one might want to weave two pieces of cloth at the same time without connecting them?

  • @ActonCreative

    @ActonCreative

    11 ай бұрын

    Hi! I'm so glad you're enjoying them!! I've found that weaving 2 separate layers is usually a technique that's combined with another technique, not typically just on its own. For instance, if you are creating a garment, you might weave a tube followed by 2 separate fabrics, that ends in another tube. That's historically how I've seen it incorporated! Hope that helps!

    Thanks but I'm not sure if I understand in relation to double weave. Is there a separate treadle for the top fabric when weaving the bottom?

  • @ActonCreative

    @ActonCreative

    2 ай бұрын

    @@krisburlingame7331 Oh gotcha! In my example, I have each shaft tied to its own treadle, plus 2 treadles for plain weave. Basically you have 2 shafts assigned to each layer. The trick is that you need to completely lift the top layer out of the way in order to weave the bottom layer. Does that help?

  • @jmuehlbauer42

    Excellent video. I do love double weave. I have been looking into getting an 8 shaft loom. Could I doubleweave on 8 shafts and do overshot on each layer? Or any 4 shaft pattern on each layer? I would think one could, but thought I would ask. I can't imaging threading the heddles for that weave structure, but one thread at a time is best...take it slow and all will be well, Right?

  • @ActonCreative

    @ActonCreative

    Hi Joseph! You could absolutely do overshot on each layer with an 8-shaft loom! That sounds fabulously ambitious! But, I have all faith that you could figure it out!
