What a nice introduction to doubleweave! I’m looking forward to seeing your doublewide blankets. Aside from a sampler, I have done a doublewide project once, plain weave, and was pleased with the result, although I did have the darker bit at the fold line that often happens. Even though I placed a stripe there, it still showed more than I would have wished. Are you planning to compensate for that in some way? I’ve heard of using fishing line there and pulling it out later.

That line down the middle is my biggest worry to be honest. I’m not 100% sure what I’m going to do to try to prevent it just yet! That will be part of the journey! Also, since I’m planning to weave 4 blankets, I should have some time to work it out if I don’t get the first one or two quite right!

Can you switch randomly between front and back during weaving to pull out shapes, say, like a white circle with the green and white around it? I am aware it will connect the layers, but curios about it.

The beauty of double weave is that you can do almost anything! Especially if you aren’t afraid of connecting the layers. Connecting and interchanging the layers adds a tremendous amount of versatility and variability, opening up a world of possibilities!

Can you do double weave on a frame loom? I am new to weaving and a frame loom is all I have right now…

You need at least 4 shafts. Two for the plainweave layer on top and two for the lower layer as well. These two layers can be attached on one side, both sides or neither side. I hope that helps.

My instructor was Susi Reinink and the class I took was through the Ontario Handweavers and Spinners, though I took the class at my local guild. Susi was an AMAZING teacher! I learned so much from her that I use to this day. I took the class 7-8 years ago.
