Double Weave, Double Wide, King Size Blankets - Episode 1 / Lots of trouble shooting!

In today's episode we start the process of weaving double weave, double wide king size blankets. A big part of weaving is trouble shooting and you get to see plenty of that in this video! These blankets will be woven in crackle weave and I’m planning to add a double weave tubular selvage to them!

I absolutely love the idea that half of weaving is troubleshooting. This would be a great concept to focus on in future videos.

I really like this video. I've been a handweaver for over forty years. I have two AVLS, a 40" Folding and a 60" PDL. I use any warping method that will give me a good result depending on the yarn and project. My mentor Lillian Whipple taught me how to use the heck block reel and drum ( old technology - Luther Hooper ), but I have equipment for sectional as well as a warping square. When I do sectional I start with the selvedge sections and then warp towards the center. There's also a thinking that if you warp from the center out and you run out of yarn at least you have something! As your cones or spools wind down the tension can change especially with spools, so for that I increase the tension via the section box dowels. I have the AVL tension box which will also preserve the cross and you can pivot the reed. For longer, I typically do 25+ yard warps 24 epi and higher, the more you wind the more you have to pay attention to keeping the sections flat. Also, as a recommendation with sectional warping, that you have a backup beam revolution counting system. On Peggy Ostercamp's website and in her books there are old school mechanical ways of counting the revolutions. It gives you peace of mind.

I've not used doupes quite like that. I'm going to have to try it the next time I warp f2b.

It just occurred to me that one could save themselves a bunch of stress by measuring and setting up one inch at a time. Am I wrong about this?

I wish weaving a large blanket didn't take a giant loom.
