Planning for Double Weave

Before we dive headlong into 2 layers of woven goodness, let's chat about planning for double weave!
In order to begin visualizing a fabulous project, we'll need to understand the basic components of double weave - which is exactly what episode 99 will cover!
Here are some other double weave-related episodes to help!

    could I try two different textures as opposed to two different colours? i like the idea of trying this out but I still need the visual cues to represent each layer. oh my gosh i am so glad I found your videos! cheers! Allison

    So happy to see you diving in to this. The whole reason I bought my baby wolf years ago was to weave my own fabrics to sew with. I knew going in I was going to have to learn to do double weave to do this. Life got in the way and it is just this year I am starting to learn to use the baby wolf (been using a shacht rigid heddle for space reasons).

    When I did doubleweave, I used a blackwork chart for 'cross pollination". Worked out great since the chart is a grid and each square was 2 threads. Thanks!!

    Hi! I’m new to weaving. I’ve being doing it for a few months now so I’m still grasping the patters and basics. I’m Also a visual learner so it’s much quicker to learn it if I see it. Have you done a video of you warping a loom for double weaving? Thanks!!

  • @ActonCreative

    Hi Jimmy! Welcome to the world of weaving! I haven't done a video specific to dressing a loom for double weave. But, the process will be the same as dressing a loom for a single layer. The only big difference is keeping track of the top versus the bottom layers. I hope that helps! Best of luck!!

    When you wind on your warping board I'm guessing you hold both top and bottom yarn, so that the cross has both top and bottom in order?

  • @ActonCreative

    @ActonCreative

    Hi! I don't always hold multiple yarns, but I do make sure to establish the cross so everything's in order. Is that what you're asking?

  • @lo-jcrochetandyarnlover2642

    @lo-jcrochetandyarnlover2642

    Жыл бұрын

    @Acton Creative kind of. If you are putting the top on shafts 1&3 and bottom on 2&4, then wouldn't you want them warped in that order? That would be a color change every other wrap, so I'm thinking, if you wrap one of each at the same time you won't have to change out colors until you have a color change in your warp. I see it as weaving 2 pieces at a time, so you would warp 2 at a time. Does that make sense? I'm thinking that would keep the cross for both colors?

    @Acton Creative also I'm a fairly new weaver, about a year into it, so my question may not be worded correctly, and I may be over thinking it some.

    @@lo-jcrochetandyarnlover2642 I think I follow! I don't treat this type of project differently than any other. I make sure that my yarns are in order so I can sit at the loom and thread the heddles in order, too. I hope that helps! Let me know if you have follow up questions!

    Usually I plan for 10% draw in, when planning for double weave should I plan for more?

  • @ActonCreative

    @ActonCreative

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Anton! What a great question! When you refer to "draw in", are you referring to the difference between the width in your reed and the woven fabric width? If that's the case, I don't think so. Whether you are weaving 2 separate layer, or double the width, or a tube, you can plan for your usual draw in. The times I've woven a tube or double width project, even though I'm turning a corner, I didn't pull in my edges more than normal. However, I've had a little bit of practice at controlling that part of the process. So, if you are worried about it, feel free to give yourself a little more room just in case. My suggestion would be to take your best guess the first time around, weave it with your regular motion pulling in like you normally do, and then document what happens! This will give you great insight as to how best to plan your future projects. I hope that helps!! Let me know if you have follow up questions!!
