Honda delivered the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle in 1999 with the launch of the rather odd-looking two-seater Insight, and has rolled hybrid tech out across its range in the years since. But, it took until 2020 for the first pure electric Honda car to emerge in the shape of the e hatchback.
The small, five-door EV is aimed squarely at taking sales from the MINI Electric, the PSA Group’s Peugeot e-208 and Vauxhall Corsa-e, plus the electric Fiat 500. Power for the Honda e comes from a 35.5kWh lithium-ion battery, with a rear-mounted electric motor that drives the rear wheels. This set-up provides either 134bhp or 152bhp, with a maximum range of up to 137 miles.
There are just two equipment levels - Standard and Advance, with the entry trim matched to the lower powered car and the top-spec kit only offered in tandem with the more potent power option.
Honda hasn’t scrimped with on-board tech in the e - there is an 8.8-inch display in front of the driver, along with two 12.3-inch screens taking care of the infotainment system. The system operates much like a smartphone, with large tile icons for various features (from power flow to activating the car’s onboard wi-fi hotspot), pinch-and-zoom functionality and the ability to switch information from one screen to another. There's plenty of tech then, but is it enough to win us over? Nicola Hume finds out in this full review.

I bought an almost two year old ex-demo earlier this year, which sorted the price issue out (well, partly anyway ;)). Even after more than two years after release, it's still THE coolest EV to date. It seems to me that this car was made by actual car loving engineers (because it's definitely over-engineered for a city car), instead of accountants and marketeers. It's like buying a small roadster or sportscar. You don't buy one because it offers the best solutions to your everyday needs. You buy one because you want it and love driving it.

I think it's a great to have a small car that's clearly a thing of luxury. Loads of people want to have an exclusive car, something really special and indulgent but that usually means something big that takes up space, is hard to manoeuvre and park and is really unsafe for other road users. The Honda is great for people who want something special, can afford it but really only need it for short city hops. More of these in big cities please, fewer huge luxury SUVs - I think even the people driving them think they're a pain!

We tested it, it drives well, has a very small turning cercle, the mirrors work well, the interior is original. But the boot, and more importantly the range were insufficient for us. We ended up with a second-hand BMW i3 with range extender, giving double the range and more than double the boot volume. Also very original in its own style, pity they stopped producing them.

Firstly this is the best review and reviewer I found on yt who has perfect knowledge of how to use blenders as shown in the video 😀 - the way she blends wit along with informative facts is truly amazing. Now about Honda-e - What's the purpose of owning an ev without all those features and gadgets, so according to me Honda-e is an perfect ev for people who can afford it, atleast it doesn't looks like wastage of money unlike others in the segment which offers nothing unique and are just small cute boxes that commutes people and goods from place A to B, then make ppl busy with calculating speed and distances.. 😀.. so cost is not a problem and appears justified but there is a bigger problem- I don't agree that it is just a city car, it's actually a tourist car.. a car that is worth taking to trips and long travels but then its low range can create a big problem.. 😭

That's a very harsh title/intro imo..! The Honda E is pricey but then, all EVs are. The boot is small, but you really don't need a big boot since this is supposed to be a city car, and it is also more spacious than it looks. It does have a short range, but it also has one of the most powerful and efficient regen I've ever experienced in an EV. Small battery means it also gets charged quicker. And the camera mirrors are absolutely brilliant, zero complaints about that. It's a car that is way ahead of its competition when it comes to technology. That's just my opinion. If you are considering a Honda e and you are looking for a city car, just go for it!

GREAT REVIEW NICOLA, i nearly fell out of my chair laughing when you pulled out your blender and it actually worked, most plugs in cars are a max of 400 watts, this is your Friday night daiquiri car and the boot is big enough to carry all the necessary ingredients 😂they re a brilliant car nicely equipped, decent head/leg room, the best part it's RWD, i could use this as a daily driver and would only need to charge it every second day, the price being 34,420 pounds and i convert this to Canadian dollars, wow $52,642.00 Canadian OUCH! that is allot of money , you can buy a Hyundai Kona EV top spec for $45,000.00 with a 500 km range, it not as nice, and our government does not really even have an EV tax credit program in place, it is poor at best, Luv the Honda E 👍

I love the review Nicola, almost like a failed love story. As a car that's designed for a purpose it ticks all the boxes as well as looking a bit cute. But the amount of your hard earned cash that you need to had over for the privilege considering the range and size of the car there are many other options that would be much higher on the list. I can imagine see these on large driveways of very expensive houses where the high purchase price might be less of an issue though so I guess we could factor in a modicum of exclusivity.....It'll be interesting to see the residuals are like on pre-owned models. The digital mirrors look more of an expensive gimmick but it would be interesting to see how the images look in low light. Generally I like the way the interior is done. The fish tank is a great addition for something relaxing to look at while passing the time when you're at a charging point (yet again).

Our family has one and it’s fine for local use providing (a) you have a charger at home and (b) you have another vehicle for distance stuff. Remove the plastic fillers and there’s loads of room for cables and bits underneath the boot floor. The thing that pees me off is the fact that the rear seat back doesn’t split. We’re a family of three so would often like to enlarge the boot and seat the daughter in the rear. But it’s one thing or the other.

@@Brian-om2hh Exactly! We use ours for city and rural driving in and around Brussels. Now in summertime the range is at around 250km (11kWh/100km). And even in wintertime we use it every day and charge (at home) only once a week. We've also tried it for weekend trips and even a 206km trip Brussels - Bruges - Brussels: no problem. I really don't get the "range" criticism. It's like blaming a Rolls Royce Phantom for not being a practical city car. Honda messed up big time with the E. Its expensive price point and low range meant it fell into a very niche target audience - which is probably why they're very uncommon. Those who own an E probably also have an ICE powered luxury SUV for the longer journeys, whereas the E is a gimmick car to use around town. At least that's what I can gather from seeing them around in central London. It could've been a mass-market, affordable success story. But it just wasn't...

We have a Honda e, a SEAT Mii electric, and next month take delivery of a Citroën Ami Pop; having previously owned 3 Renault Zoes we’re totally sold on EVs and travelling 100s of miles for staycations in our Honda is never an issue as we’re both retired and accept the additional time required to get to our destination.

We liked the Honda, pity it was a shortrange city car and has no cabrio version. We ride the last ICE Smart Cabrio that does 4ltr on 100km. For real world use as a regular car, with 165km range the Honda E is unusable. 80% of the time it would do, but we do a lot of rides thru the country 400km back and forth. Also once a month around 600 km. and 2 times a year trips thru Europe. Last month a trip from Netherlands to Austria for 10 days. With the ICE Smart, after 650km filling up 5 minutes, and 350km for the last leg back home. I dont even want to do the math how long that would take with a Honda E.

It’s such an awesome car. The tech, the looks… oh my god the looks 😍 but that range legitimately sucks. During the winter with the heating on you’d probably only get 60-70miles and that’s just awful.

~ $40k USD for this is up there. The trunk I could forgive, as you can fold the rear seats down. The side mirrors (screens) I cant forgive, thats an obvious design flaw. I would go a Nissan Leaf over this all day. Its significantly more boring (are shopping hack cars meant to be exciting?), but way more practical, and around $5k cheaper.

The Honda E has the same problems as the current generation Renault Twingo. Rear drive, small boot, fun to drive, high price for the segment and will become extremely niche and continue on that trend. The idea for the E was good, but they aimed to high and people with the budget for the E would just go elsewhere for something bigger or better. Most people don't buy a Honda for this price, if they economised I'm sure they would have done much better.

Id buy it tomorrow even with its high price if it got 200 mile real world range. EV database gives the E a 105 mile range, and with my occasional commute being 45 miles, its a bit close for me.

I think the key problem is that Honda is limited by their battery manufacturing capacity. Given that, there's no point in selling this car cheaply or with a big range. It seems they are testing the waters more than anything with this car.
