The Honda E is flawed - here's why you'll want one anyway!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Last week we got to spend a few hours with one of the most exciting new cars of 2020: the long-awaited, ridiculously adorable Honda E. Having driven it on all sorts of different roads and prodded around the cabin, Jack believes that while far from perfect, the E is a car that people will buy anyway, on account of its charm.

So cute mine is arriving at the start of September. For the very few days in a year when I want to go more than 100 miles, I'll have to stop and recharge. So what? The rest of the time I'll be in a car that turns heads, drives beautifully, and is a lovely place to sit in.

Nice video, I can tell the car is fun to drive, compact, and hatchback. Check, check, check. I could totally be ok with charging overnight and waking up to 200km range every morning, I never drove more than that on a weekday. For the weekend, driving this car might include spending time at a public charger. I think that's ok if the alternative is a heavy car, or a boring/regular car.

I love this Honda e! The 80 -137 mile Range is more than enough for someone who lives near work. I have a 2015 Leaf with a 70 - 78 mile range, and my daily usage is at most 40-50 miles going to and from work plus grocery shopping after work. Having an EV with a short range just requires some planning when traveling longer distances. Fortunately the nearby cities also have plenty of charging stations, and they can be easily found at shopping centers. You just have to be willing to charge while you dine or shop, and that will eliminate any driver anxiety.

Sorry but the problem isn't range but the charging network. Here in the uk 100 miles is plenty for most people on most days. You just charge at the end of the day. The issue is longer journeys and heading to places lacking charge points like North Wales. Putting huge batteries in cars is a waste in most cases, it's the infrastructure that needs to improve.

I have a gas powered Mini Cooper and the electric Mini is priced close to the Honda E-vehicle, has a similar amount of trunk (boot) space and a similar range, but from what I have read, it is as much fun to drive as the gas powered Mini. I think I would go with the electric Mini over the Honda but that is probably because I already own a Mini and know how much fun it is to drive.

I've driven an 2014 e-UP the last couple of years (16kWh battery). WTLP of 160KM, but in reality it's 80-120KM based on temperature and highway/city driving etc. Anyways - learning to drive after kWh calculations rather than the range "guesso-meter", you'll be able to push range and get where you want to be without worries. I'll drive that car down to 0-5km range without worries, as I know the car and I know how much juice it has left. Some larger cars will leave you stranded with 30-50km of range left, which makes no sense. We also bought the 38kWh IONIQ which has a range of over 310KM (350KM in summer) and it feels like a crazy amount for daily use. Honestly, cars with 60-100kWh batteries just seems stupid in comparison - it doesn't take that long to charge, and brakes on a trip can be a nice thing. I don't see why the Honda e is compared to other EV's, where the whole point of 'e' is to be an URBAN vehicle. It's a perfect commuter. For me - as long as the range makes it so I can travel my daily commute back and forth twice and still have a decent buffer left - I'm happy. I totally agree on the environmental question of producing oversized battery packs on several hundreds of kilos or even 1000+ and drag them back and forth every day on a 10-20km trip in each direction.

Boot space: I don't care. Range? -- 137 MILES IS PLENTY!!! THE ENTIRE EV-DRIVING WORLD HAS GONE MAD WITH RANGE ANXIETY!!!!! The only good thing about the Honda e is that everyone is in love with it. Oh, pleasure, love, passion, all of the things which make life good -- is that all?! I would be remiss to finish this comment without complaining that the Honda e, like most of the best EV's, is not for sale in the US, where, it is claimed, we only want SUV's. We don't want SUV's. Nobody wants SUV's. Detroit wants to continue cramming SUV's down our throats, even in the EV era, because they make bigger profits per vehicle. Please, Europe, start importing all that good stuff over here to us Murrkins. We love you. We really, really do. EDIT: Oops, the Honda is Japanese, isn't it? What I meant to say was: Please, Europe and Japan and China and Korea and India and Kenya and everywhere else with their own EV firms, start importing all that good stuff over here to us Murrkins. We love you. We really, really do.

More wingeing about Range and limited boot space, even though it's designed as a City Car. Why? Well there is a good reason. These Journos love the #Hondae and they drive for a living, and would love to drive it, all day, every day. But of course most normal people might love their cars, but they have other things to do. Drive to work, go shopping, or pick up a friend etc. And most of the time those journeys are 15-25 miles max. Just plug in when you get home (or work) like you do with your phone. If you only shop once a month, or have a young family with huge amounts of gear. Sorry, this car won't work for you. Buy a Tesla.

Yes we love our parents, and they love us. If I were to own a Honda E one day then my parents would come in handy. I would borrow their petrol fueled for the day or days, while they would enjoy the Honda E. What’s the big deal, most of know trustworthy people who would love to swap cars for a day or two ? Yes it’s range is limited but Honda did the right thing by focusing on developing a god vehicle, because in a few years the energy density of batteries will have improved and they will have the perfect car. with fine range. Had they scooped all their money into developing a mediocre car with long range. Then they would in a few years have had a still mediocre car with even longer range🧐 It’s very important that Honda continues to produce and develop even if the E type doesn’t turn out sell well (I hope it will) because they are on to something. A future classic.

Saleswise, here in the UK, I predict that it will prove to be a colossal white elephant. It features a boot the size of a postage stamp plus a range just about capable of carrying you twice round the block - ok, make that three times - added to which there's a charging-port lid on the bonnet resembling the top of your nan's commode. Finally (this next bit is tech overload gimmickry and then some) we come to a multitude of in-your-face screens stretching would you believe the entire length of the dash, one, wait for it, forming a mock fish tank... I kid you not. Presumably it's there in answer to the mass of ev drivers demanding of the manufacturer to please ensure the fascia incorporates images of fake floating perch etc. The one aspect I applaud are the innovative door cameras but you pay through the nose and mouth to enjoy their presence. A few weeks after taking delivery, said person went into a motor accessories shop wanting a windscreen wiper for it. The assistant's response was, 'Sounds about right!']

I hate nobody and nothing. My Honda blog was simply an honest reaction from the heart, a constructive criticism of what to me is a ludicrous motoring mouse that will in all probability turn out to be a mini white elephant for the manufacturer, at least in this country. It's an interesting fact, to me at any rate, that though I live in and move around London I've not seen even one e, despite that cities are the place for which this laughably weird specimen is supposedly designed... It's probably selling in its thousands in Japan and China but, repeat, over here I reckon it will struggle for survival, especially with the likes of the Ora Cat and BYD Dolphin waiting in the wings to give it a run for its money, the latter set to massively undercut the obscenely overpriced hehe e ... Thank you you for your well thought out reply.

Not impressed at all. All these automakers creating new niche EVs are just doing it to avoid fees and to play around with the tech before going all in. Its going to be too late to play catchup.

Unlike tesla, honda doesn't put untested technology on the face of customers. It's going to take a lot of time to ensure that the battery tech they are using is safe and reliable.

Camera wind mirrors are horrible just trying too hard, external glass mirrors are perfect zero reason to replace them. Disagree they are not better.

Looks old inside, specifically the door inserts&cloth of the seats. 🤔 Mirrors are lousy execution as well. Look at teslas fender cams(which should be accepted as side view mirrors already. Sleek small aerodynamic inserts.
