Honda e: the EV that electric car haters love // Jonny Smith

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Honda e is probably the most fascinating EV without a Tesla badge. In fact it's probably more fascinating, because its design alone captured the attention and desire of legions of car enthusiasts who don't even bloody like electric cars.
This 137 mile range Pokemon faced thing has a 35.5kWh battery pack which can be rapid charged in half an hour at 100kw. 0-62 takes 8.3 seconds with this 150hp launch edition car, but you will be able to option it with 134hp thereafter.
On paper it almost loses in every respect to its plug-in peers, but there's a charm to the £27,000 e, and for some that's enough. Using the power of finance you'll be able to live with one from under £300 a month. Regardless of whether you give a toss about zero emission cars, there is no denying this kind of design is precisely what Honda does best. I hope they do more small, slightly-retro-but-not rear wheel drive cars in the near future. Oh, the power of dreams...
Thanks for watching. Please subscribe to Carpervert for an eclectic mixed bag of automotive treats from today, yesterday and tomorrow.

My mum has one of these, so i have, as a result a few miles in it. It has a spectacular interior with all the tech you could need and more. The glass-roof makes the cabin feel spacious and filled with light. The turning-circle takes you by suprise every other corner. The low centre of gravity makes it feel agile and zippy. The 156-bhp makes it suprisigly quick off the lights. Looking at the range, it's easy to dismiss it. DON'T! As a city-car, it's perfect! The Honda E is a nice place to be, and a incredily well-designed automobile. I could not reccomend it higher!

The design is so intuitive and well thought out that it actually makes me want to weep. Multiple, elegantly placed HD displays... but the AC controls and volume still have physical buttons. It's like they took the time to actually consider the ergonomics. The cupholder and storage area are ingenious and the modularity is a great takeaway from the things I love about utility vehicles. The power outlets make it even more of an appliance but the driving characteristics look like it would be a joy to drive. Honestly, this is the first EV I've really seen and though, when I have the money I am gonna buy one of these.

There is only one tiny 'flaw' in the design for me so far: I wished they made the wheels slightly bigger. I just don't like cars with tiny wheels, it makes them look out of proportion (there are definetly worse cars then this), but i love the rest of this car. I would love an option with 18 (or maybe even 19) inch wheels, i dont mind the 5 or 10 km lesser range and the probably slightly bigger turning circle.

The problem with many Press Car Loan Reviews is that they are all the same. The script sent with the car stays the same, only the channel name, face, voice and background changes. Try watching a few. I know from people that do reviews, they will say anything they are told in order to get a free car for a few weeks or months. They do the same with other products they get for free and with sponnsorship deals. Great if you can get that sort of thing, but the reviews are not always the type me or you would film if we were asked to.

From what I've read, this car was originally made to include the US market, but then the higher ups at Honda's USA headquarters talked the Japanese execs out of bringing it here because they were scared that it would've been a flop.

@@quasimondo1933 In good chunks of the rural south eastern US it would be a flop where a lot of families have a truck as their main transportation, or as a 2nd, and don't want to have to worry about range if they want to take a long trip without stopping. Heck I have family in Athens GA, who sometimes drive to Atlanta GA, or Augusta GA, and just to Augusta GA from Athens is over 100 Miles, or almost 2 hours with no traffic, so this car would be dead, or nearly dead by the time it got there, and they do that just to go shopping for places they don't have in Athens. Some people forget how far it really is to go places here in the southeast at times. the 3 nearest Walmart's to me are 30 mins each, and so that's 20+ miles there, then another 20+ miles going around town for a whole day doing the weekly/bi-weekly shopping plus the trip home, that's 60 - 80 miles, and at that point a lot of people would getting range anxiety, and I can't blame them.

I wish they sold this in the U.S., seriously, I would strongly consider this for my next car if they did. They would need to increase the range to a least 200 (preferably 300) miles for it to be practical here though.

Maybe they could make a 5 door variant with similar styling, something like the US version of the Civic. (EU/JP version was a hatcback, US version was a sedan) That way they could fit a larger battery in it to produce a larger range EV. I really love the interior, really love the exterior, but the range is a big let down! Makes sense for a city car though I suppose. :)

I seriously considered the Honda E over my Chevy Bolt if it was sold in the US. But with the Bolt at a similar price and a 259 max range I think Honda would have had a hard time competing against it.

@UnderBridge Rock It depends a lot on your life style really. :) I regularly drive around purely for the sake of driving, I enjoy driving. Driving fast on twisty mountain roads is great fun. On top of that, the area I live in is outside of a city so it's mainly 60mph roads, a lot of stopping and going back to 60mph over and over on most journeys. The issue is that with the Model 3 Performance I have, in the winter, my real world range is around 150 miles due to the roads I drive on and HVAC usage. With someone like a Honda E that only boasts 150 miles rated range, you could be looking at 75 miles of real range in similar circumstances. In rural areas where a restaurant I go to is 25 miles away, that kind of usable range doesn't inspire confidence. (I live in the UK by the way! No Texan here. A lot of our roads outside cities are 60mph, very twisty, and up and down hills. Horrible for efficiency, especially combined with HVAC being used for heating 80% of the year due to the colder weather) BUT... I know the Honda E is just a city car, the range makes perfect sense. I'm just giving an example of a real use case for a higher range vehicle that's more than "Because I want more range". :)
