The Honda Jazz has been around since 2002 in the UK, and over the intervening years its mix of practicality, reliability and low running costs has won a loyal band of repeat customers, who will swear by all of the unassuming supermini’s aforementioned characteristics.
All well and good, but the Jazz’s unassuming nature has made it hard to reach customers outside the group of buyers of a certain age and outlook who have traditionally homed in on the little Honda’s common-sense qualities.
The latest model introduced in 2020 is the fourth generation, and whereas in Japan it’s available with 1.3-litre petrol or 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid power, here in Europe we’ve so far been offered only the 1.5-litre e:HEV variant. That decision is in line with Honda’s stated intention to eliminate conventional powertrains from its European line-up by 2022, so don’t hold your breath for a cheaper petrol version here.
Still, the hybrid powertrain works well with the rest of the package, and as Nicola Hume finds out, the Jazz offers one or two moments of brilliance elsewhere.

I'm close to 50 years-old and I couldn't care less about those "old people car" comments. I have driven this generation Jazz twice and it's a brilliant car. Simple but stylish, compact but roomy and very practical with a great visibility all around from the inside to the outside. Try it. The more you drive it, the more you most likely will like it. Thank you, Honda. And special thanks for those traditional knobs and buttons on the dashboard.

There's nothing dull about reliability, just as there's nothing particularly enthralling about being sat in a broken down on the hard shoulder (where available). I've had three Jazzes and not one has ever gone wrong.

My 2009 version (1396cc) is over 154000 Miles. One bit of welding 2yrs ago. Otherwise does the job brilliantly. Had it 10 years and I hit 60 years old, last year😂 so I’m NOW, in the ‘older’ category. Agree, the next, 3rd gen, version wasn’t good, rough engine, bad mirrors. Irritating infotainment. This version will probably have my money.

Car reviewers always say, the ford fiesta is more fun to drive but fail to say they are rubbish for long term reliability and you are still better off with a Honda or Toyota.

No one buys Fiesta with a prospect of driving it for 15+ years. Obviously, no one properly cares about a car to be sold in aftermarket after 4-5 years, if not sooner. More, younger people doesn't even know how to care and have no money for a qualified service. That said, there are better and worse cars, better and worse services, but overall quality, reliability gap between different international automakers isn't that big (discount Fiat, though I understand why cars built with Italy in mind are so unreliable to the North of The Alps).

KZread algorithm brought me here and I was surprised the Honda Jazz are driven by seniors in the UK. Over here in east asia the Jazz/Fit are driven by street racers ripping them through corners with semi slicks. The RS version has a little more power but the point of the Jazz is its agility.

It’s a real shame that in UK car culture the Jazz is an “old people’s car”. I owned the 2nd gen a couple years ago and it was such a joy to drive on twisty, hilly roads. Great feeling through all the controls.

I had a 1.4 EX and loved it. So much boot space and able to carry 2 bikes and three people at the same time. Also, if you selected Sport mode and let it 'change up', well not quite, but whatever the CVT equates to changing up, at the rev limiter, it used to give people a bit of a surprise.

I'm on my third inherited jazz, first one did 172k miles without missing a beat. They are bomb proof, cheap to maintain and actually very good to drive. True they lack in power, but you can throw it about easily and its the best car I've ever owned.

  • @dogsbodyish8403
    @dogsbodyish84036 ай бұрын

It's not a CVT - e- or otherwise. All gearing is fixed, and it works in series-hybrid mode at low speeds (engine drives a generator which powers the battery and electric motor) and parallel hybrid at higher speeds (engine drive wheels directly, along with the electric motor). Very similar to the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Different form the Toyota Hybrid Drive system (misleadingly labelled "e-CVT" by Toyota) - but that equally has totally fixed gearing (in a particularly ingenious form). They all drive a bit like a CVT though, with the engine "spooling-up" when you put your foot down...

I have a 2013 Jazz (Fit) in part because I wanted something into which I could easily put my road bike . The clever fold down seats make that so easy. Great car around town and frugal when it comes to consumption and inexpensive to run and service. Only sad that Honda Canada will no longer be bringing in the Jazz. Seems Canadians are too in love with their awful SUVs 😢

I bought one in 2020. I was looking for a hybrid and this was, by far, the best. More of an electric car with a petrol engine running a generator. Looking for a new car and still not ready to go full electric. Juke is an option but I am buying another jazz. First time I have bought the same car EVER. Negative is service costs.

The Jazz has been discontinued in Australia much to my annoyance. I’m no pensioner and I love this car. My BF is on her second one and she raves about Honda’s reliability and customer service. She recently found rust in her 2 yr old 2021 Jazz and they are going to fix and loan a car during the process at no cost to her. I’d buy this version in a heartbeat.

It isn't a CVT gearbox, actually there is no gearbox on the Honda Jazz hybrid, only a direct link with the engine when you need more power or on highways. Honda did, somehow, emulate a form of gearing but that is virtual.

The Jazz is a brilliant city car, decent mpg (60mpg all day long) , plenty of room for four passengers (five is a tight squeeze). I had mk1, mk 3 and new shape. Also decent on motorways, and has sufficient amount of acceleration to overtake. Reasonably good on the twisted as long as your not doing silly speeds. Had to have EX model has it had geared seats and heated steering wheel. Ride on big wheels is firm, but not uncomfortable. Dash looks a little dated, but works just fine. Yes, some cars have better digital displays, but Honda( in my opinion) have the right balance.

i bought my "FIT" (JAZZ)new in 2015, base model 6 speed, and it 's a BLAST to do the "twisty bits"! I do concur about road noise, it is loud, and in my US spec gen 2 i cut out and attached a matte black cover to the dash, the sun/glare off the top of it is actually dangerous. I wondered why Honda dropped it from the US market,, maybe i'm too old? hmm 78? Living in the New York Fingerlakes region there are quite a lot of the two generations of Fit here.

Loved my 2016 Jazz, but what she said about the ride quality is true... it's too firm! It's one of the reasons I sold it after 4 years of ownership, and didn't replace it with this new one. I like it so much I even looked into if the Honda City spring/dampers are interchangeable, because those have a much more compliant ride, but sadly they can't fit. Everything else about the Jazz was ace, and it never let me down or left me wanting, apart from a comfier ride.

Love my 2009 Honda Fit, American Jazz, and would happily buy a new hybrid version, but the geniuses at Honda cut it from the US market. My wife still misses her 2003 Honda Element, and regrets trading it in, should have spent the money on refurbishing instead of a disappointing new car. I also miss my 1994 Del Sol, I hope Honda drops a new two seater convertible soon, at 50 my midlife crisis is eminent, and Honda has no cool options.😂

I have a 2019 Fit. I may be a senior, but this car us fun to drive, gets great gas mileage, love the magic seats. In other words, a great commuter car. And I have taken it on long trips. Honda made a mistake not bringing the new Jazz/fit to US and Canada. Not everyone wants or needs a SUV. The Element is a work of genius. Lots of them on the US west coast. Folks falling over backwards to find one on the used car market, including myself. Honda should bring a new element to market. It WILL sell.

The UK buyer's demographic means the Jazz is one of the few cars I'm not sure I'd want to be seen driving. But when I did have the previous model as a loan car, it was pretty good. And the VTEC engine unexpectedly came alive at high revs, with a real kick. Like many small cars these days, the Jazz is expensive!

Great review Nicola - jeans included ...This seems to be very good self charging hybrid coupled with Honda's track record with reliability. I have a Clio E tech which is also very good ( and cheaper) but, again, Renault, like Honda, have slightly stiffened the suspension and you don't get the compliant feel that is associated with French cars of old. Why are car manufacturers becoming obsessed with handling over ride comfort.? I'm sure the average family man through to the older driver like myself doesn't give a jot about handling. We just want to be transported around in comfort. Is that too much to ask for the large amounts of money we have to pay for our tin box on wheels? The same goes for seats but I think that's just me. Only Citroen seem to be bucking the trend.

You've got more space with first generation in the back - 380/1300L, reliability proven by years and yet quite modern design which is more mature than 2009-2014 model and this 2023 and not that boring as Ford Fusion of those years. Brilliant. I'm now just waiting for Nicola to come up with a bra support level scale to measure ride quality... I'm seriously considering one of these. Interestingly, all but one spec in NZ is combustion engine-only.

Car journo's are still using the Ford Fiesta as their go-tp benchmark. You would have more chance of finding Prince's Harry and William chucking back pints in a Wetherspoons than you would finding a Ford dealer able to order you a new Fiesta before production ceases in Cologne in June this year. They are extinct and therefore pointless as a new car comparison. Stop it.

At £21 - £27,500 for a new Jazz. Get yourself a Dacia Sandero Stepway for £10,000 less and walk away with a smile. Yes it may not be as posh or refined, but the Jazz ain't £10,000 better. Brand snobs need not apply.

The biggest image problem the Honda Jazz has (by far) is that it's typecast as the ultimate pensioner's shopping car.. I'm retiring in just a few weeks time, and even I don't feel ready to own a Jazz.......
