We Play the Least Played Commanders We Can Find W/

Ойындар

Our guest thought it was finally time we started playing some EDH, so we learned to count to 100 and brought the least popular commanders we could find to the table. First ever commander gameplay let's go!

    yep Rule 406.3. Exiled cards are, by default, kept face up and may be examined by any player at any time. Cards "exiled face down" can't be examined by any player except when instructions allow it.

    @@lorddracon8992 - ntm they must be shown in order to validate they meet the card requirements. If anything one can argue he only has to show the card types and hide the all the rest of the card info, but thats a pretty thin argument.

  • @KiloShank

    @KiloShank

    @@DismemberTheAlamo It didn't apply to situations where you look at a card and then exile it face down. Therefore, cards that do this also explicitly say you may look at those cards. Basically. If you exile a card face down, its mostly a general exile not meeting a type (E.g. off the top of the deck) But if you exile "An artifact from the hand" You need to prove the type, and so it's ~100% of the time going to be face up. But yea... house rules > tournament rules for non-tournament gameplay. Its funnier this way.

    @@kingfilm100 hey! Glad you like it! Many Auras in the deck have enter or leave the battlefield triggers. Imagine Umbilicus with Reality Acid. Now you can snipe one permanent per turn without expending a card while even inflicting a little additional annoyance on your opps through Umbilicus. Thats also why cards like Omen of the Sea are in the deck - they just naturally interact nicely with the engine pieces. But the bounce also helps to clear Hakim. If you Hakim back a Take Possession in your upkeep in response to the Umbilicus trigger you can then bounce it and use it in your turn. Does that explain it?

    hey! quick question as you're half the homies to build the deck - Toffel activated Hakim's enchantment attachment ability while equipped with lightning greaves, which grants shroud. I noticed on the rulings for Hakim that you cannot use his ability with enchantments where he is not a valid target (I assume to avoid silly things like attaching a wild growth to him for some reason) does his attachment ability bypass shroud, or was this a simple mistake? @@travishester6859 Commander is a format where trying to win is actively discouraged. Commander players familiar with the format are aware of the sort of soft rules that need to be implemented into the game to make it a fun multi-player experience. However those who come from other formats have a drastically different approach to magic as a whole and can have a difficult time understanding that the goals of Commander are different than those of legacy(with the exception of cedh of course). There isn't anything wrong with either player(the spike or the timmy), they just see magic as fundamentally different games and therefore can have a difficult time understanding eachother. tl;dr some players see the game differently than you do and that is ok.

    This looks like such a fun format. I'd like to see another twist on it where you can't use cards in more than somewhere in the 10-15% range of eligible decks on EDHrec, to show you don't need to run *anything* popular to have fun in EDH. Granted basic lands would be exempt from the rule. I also looked through most of the commanders with less than 100 decks, I think my mono-black deck will end up being Ashling, the Extinguisher. It looks like a more fun way to run a sacrifice deck, which has gotten a really bad rap since Tergrid was printed, and she has all of 55 decks on EDHrec. That and I like her for the same reason I like Umbris (Aggro mill), it's aggro sacrifice instead of hard control.

I'm pretty sure that when Weatherlight says "exile" and doesn't specifically mention "face down", the cards are exiled face up, which is why you don't need to reveal them. I'm also pretty sure that Fiery Emancipation and the Foundry Inspector wouldn't have worked either, since Fiery Emancipation says "a source you control", and the commander says "that creature deals damage to its controller", so the source wouldn't be controlled by the person controlling Fiery Emancipation 😅 Still though, super fun game, especially great to see how Thoralf's weird deck went off! You can not cast an Aura targeting a creature with Shroud, but Hakim's ability does not cast the Aura nor does it target himself, it just targets the Aura while it's in the graveyard and then attaches it to him.

  • @TheSquolphin

    @TheSquolphin

    If an Aura is put onto the battlefield without using the stack, like if it is exiled and returned or Show and Tell’d in, then it doesn’t target, and just gets attached to a valid target, which bypasses hexproof and shroud. Those only protect from targeting. Kind of like board wipes and hex/shroud

    Call me crazy, but I feel like the skyship can be good; not for its card tutoring, but for its ability to thin your deck. He could have rid his deck of every sub-optimal artifact and creature and made it much more efficient. If you think of it like Doomsday, it's not a bad card.

    @@TheJannis1994 In this case, you're probably right, but that's not to say you couldn't build a deck around this limitation. If you can build a commander deck that relies mostly on artifacts and/or creatures for mana generation, then this trick could still work. Then If you draw this card, then you can use it to turn your 100 card deck into a much smaller and more streamlined version that does exactly what you want it to more efficiently.

    @@Kristjan0209 I looked into it after your comment. Turns out I hate your Deck and Game Knights show the other side. We were looking at other 1v1 formats for the side of the table they show during the overhead. In the end, unless you are showing the side the camera is positioned on (leaving the board to be one big horizontal stripe) the position of the overhead camera is completely arbitrary and is left up to personal preference. We'd rather stick to our standard that people have gotten use to for the 1v1 games on our channel, which is to show the view of the player to the right :)

    This was a very sweet game, thank you for it! It was a bit bittersweet to watch due to some missed things and rules interactions, like the Fiery Emancipation not working with Carl's commander. And there was the Manascape Refractor, to me it seems everybody at the table missed the fact that it enters the battlefield tapped, and it generated a lot of value for Jamin when he activated it multiple times right after playing it. But that's part of the game, we always miss some things during our games, so all is cool. Please create more content with Spice, he is one of the best out there!
